CRANBERRY, Pa. (AP) - A farmer who serves on a western Pennsylvania school board says he’ll challenge state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe for the Republican nomination in May.
Gordon Marburger’s announcement marks the first time Metcalfe will face a primary challenger in six years. The eight-term lawmaker from the 12th District in Butler County is generally regarded as one of the most conservative members of the state House.
But Marburger, a Mars Area school board member and school bus driver, says Metcalfe focuses too much on conservative causes that don’t directly impact the district, including toughening immigration laws and opposing gay marriage.
Marburger says he supported Gov. Tom Corbett’s pushing a $2.3 billion transportation funding bill that raised gasoline taxes and other fees to fund road and bridge repairs. Metcalfe opposed the measure, saying Corbett broke a promise not to raise taxes.
