GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - WCJB will celebrate 25 years of the TV20 Meldon Law Scholar Athlete program on Friday evening and it’s going to be a special event at an iconic venue.

The Champions Club at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium will host the awards gala. This year’s scholar athletes will be joined at the Swamp by many scholar athletes from the 25-year history of the program.

Florida Gator Men’s Basketball Coach Todd Golden will be the keynote speaker. A special message from former UF Men’s Basketball Player, Patric Young will also be given.

TV20 with have live coverage of the event starting at 6 p.m. with sports anchor and reporter Taylor Burr showcasing the impressive student-athletes whose stories she’s been telling all school year.

Jeffrey Meldon has sponsored the Scholar Athlete Program with WCJB-TV20 since 2000. Every week of the school year a high school senior in the North Central Florida area who holds a minimum 3.0 GPA and is a major contributor to their high school sport is chosen as the Scholar Athlete of the Week and given a $100 scholarship and a plaque.

“The Scholar Athlete program is my favorite contribution back to the community. I am so proud of all of our wonderful Scholar Athletes- Our country’s future leaders,” said Jeffrey Meldon.

Notable names from the past include Cornelius Ingram, CJ Spiller, Andrew Miller, and Kevarrius Hayes.

At the end of the school year a banquet is held for all the winners and their families where one male and one female Scholar Athlete of the Week are chosen as the Scholar Athlete of the Year. The winners receive a $1,000 scholarship and a trophy commemorating their achievements.
