GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - While school might be over there is no break in softball.

The best of the best in Florida Fast Pitch competed in the 8th annual Florida PGF Summer State Championship. This weekend more than 90 travel teams from across the sunshine state and the nation got to show off their talents on the mound and at the plate.

This highly competitive championship serves as a chance for players to show off their skills in front of college coaches and also provides travel teams with the opportunity to make a name for itself.

It ranges from U12-U18, featuring a couple travel teams from the Gainesville area. State Director for Florida Fastpitch Bill Hoopes says this championship is great to set the tone for the softball summer schedule.

“We are here at the 2024 Florida PGF State Championship, it’s special for a few reasons. This is year eighth of us doing a Florida PGF State Championship and it is year five of us doing it in the Newberry area here at Champions Park,” said Hoopes. “It continues to grow; we continue to provide opportunity. It’s the beginning of the summer schedule, for a lot of these teams they not only use this as a state championship to set the tone and set the name for their organization the rest of the year. But it also serves as a warmup to propel them for the summer as they face showcase tournaments, national tournaments, college camps, clinics things like that.”
