NORMANDY, Fla. (WCJB) - Members of Congress commemorated the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a parachute jump with the help of a former North Central Florida resident.

Former North Central Florida resident Ben Van Buren was the ‘jumpmaster’ for the ten lawmakers as they parachuted over One Saint Michel Friday afternoon.

Joining Van Buren was North Central Florida Congressman, Mike Waltz who helped lead the team in the jump.

Waltz expressed that this is their way of keeping the stories of World War II veterans alive.

“What a way to honor our forefathers, our veterans, who came together in such a historic way to literally liberate Europe and save the world,” Waltz said.

The team jumped from the same vintage planes that flew American paratroopers over France 80 years ago.
