GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Officials with Alachua County Public Schools are celebrating one local high school math team that has taken home the gold consistently for nearly two decades.

Earlier this month, Buchholz High School’s math team won its 16th national championship in 17 years. The BHS math team defeated 32 other schools at the Mu Alpha Theta competition in Las Vegas, Nevada.

BHS’s math team won the Mu Alpha Theta competition with a margin of 613 points, the second-highest margin in the competition’s history, according to ACPS officials. The team members brought home a total of 275 individual and team trophies, including 30 first-place awards.

BHS’s math team took first place in all three divisions, Mu (calculus), Alpha (pre-calculus) and Theta (algebra 2 and geometry).

In April, the BHS math team won its 16th state championship in 19 years, securing its spot to defend its national title this year.

Team coach Will Frazer, who is also a math teacher at BHS, expressed his pride.

“Our kids worked very hard over the summer and improved a great deal since our win at the state championship,” Frazier said.

The first-place winners from BHS included Xi Chen, Bryan Zheng and Katie He on the Relay team and Jonathan Lin, Saber Lian, Michael Wei, and Andrew Xing on the Hustle team.

Gainesville High School’s math team also competed with a team of 11 students at the national competition. GHS’s math team took 15th place overall.
