TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - A Tallahassee woman now has a safer way to get in and out of her home, thanks to a local organization building a new porch with easily accessible steps.

FL Cares is the organization behind Carolyn Haynes’ new ramp. This project is the 275th so far this year. Altogether, the organization has built 1,075 ramps since its inception in 2018.

“I am truly blessed,” Haynes said. “You don’t find too many people who want to reach out and help the elderly, and I appreciate everything they’re doing for me.”

Tallahassee’s Texas Roadhouse fundraised the money for the project and brought volunteers to help build it, according to FL Cares co-founder Eric Evans.

“We’re trying to make it easier for clients to get in and out of their homes,” Evans said. “When they’re able to walk, whether with a walker or cane, we’ll build these platform half steps. When they’re in a wheelchair, we’ll build them a wheelchair ramp.”

Haynes said her previous steps were 28 years old and the wood was rotten, leaving them shaky and unsafe. “I really couldn’t walk down them because they weren’t steady,” she said.

Evans said he wants elderly people to enjoy their home without barriers. “No one should feel trapped within their home,” he said. “It should be something where they feel the most comfortable. They can continue to live independently.”

FL Cares services Leon, Gadsden, Wakulla, and Jefferson Counties.
