TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The state of Florida is doing its own investigation into the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Florida Highway Patrol are leading a criminal investigation into the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club.

Governor Ron DeSantis said during a news conference in Orlando Monday he doesn’t trust the federal government will fairly investigate the incident.

Florida politics:

“Those same agencies that are prosecuting Trump in that jurisdiction are now going to be investigating this. I just don’t think that may be the best thing,” DeSantis said.

Republican Party of Florida Chair Evan Power said the “federal government failed President Trump now twice.”

He continued, “There’s no reason someone should get that close to him with a firearm. I’m glad that they caught him,” Power said.

Power blamed the divisive rhetoric used in this election cycle for the second attempt on Trump’s life.

“It’s that heated rhetoric that they’ve made Donald Trump somehow a threat to democracy, perceived republicans a threat to democracy,” Power said.

Democrats also quickly condemned the assassination attempt. During a Kamala Harris campaign news conference in Tallahassee on Monday, state Representative Gallop Franklin said violence is not the answer.

“In America, we settle our differences, not through violence, but at the ballot box. This election is a stark choice between two different visions for this county,” Rep. Franklin said.

Governor DeSantis said he’ll announce more about the state investigation in the coming days.
