EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Georgia high school football is back, and we’re to give us a little piece of the cake to hold us over until the real deal.

You could feel the excitement in the air as we are just one week away from the start of Friday night football.

But before these games go in the win-loss column, Lakeside and Laney squared off at Lakeside High School to polish off those final details.

“We took a big step as far as playing in the playoffs and being competitive all season, so we just trying to continue to grow as a program,” said Laney’s Head Coach Ronnie Baker.

Lakeside’s Head Coach Steve Hibbitts said: “You know, every team is different. Every opportunity we get to be on the field, we get a chance to prove ourselves and improve every week and that’s all we’re trying to do is get better each and every day.”

The Wildcats started off this road game with an impressive drive, but just as they got across midfield, the Panthers jarred the ball loose or so they thought.

It’s not every day you get to keep your talents close to home in your home state. But that’s now a reality for Aiken forward and midfielder Reid Raintree.

Officials ruled that the runner was down before the fumble, but it didn’t matter.

It didn’t take long for the Panthers offense to heat up as Wide Receiver Isaac Sherman takes the direct snap and takes it directly to the endzone.

Speaking of the endzone, Lakeside fooled the entire Laney defense and the cameraman with a long touchdown run by Jack Thexton.

The Panthers will begin the regular season next Friday night as they go to Grovetown.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats will begin their regular season at home against Westside.
