EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - It’s been three years since the Greenbrier girls’ volleyball team reached a state title match and came up empty handed.

It haunted them.

But this year, they’re throwing the past out the window and letting the fresh air do its job.

This is a whole new team.

Georgia high school football is back, and we’re to give us a little piece of the cake to hold us over until the real deal.

“It’s a completely new team. To be 100% honest, we lost a lot of seniors last year, so this year we’re just focusing on working together and playing really smart and scrappy,” said senior, Daniella Richards.

Scrappy — like the underdogs they’ve been, but no longer want to be.

The Pack wants their name in the conversation.

“We have a lot of new players. We have bigger players than we have in the past few years. So, I feel like now that we have a new offense and defense, we’re able to complete more,” said Richards.

Head Coach Kevin Williams said: “They’ve been playing for a couple years together. So, we’re gonna see what they can do.”

It’s not every day you get to keep your talents close to home in your home state. But that’s now a reality for Aiken forward and midfielder Reid Raintree.

But it’s what they have done already that gives them confidence.

Last season, the Pack finished runner-up. They kept a tough non-region schedule to compete later in the season.

They’ve added North Augusta, ARC and Fox Creek.

Richards said: “Everything’s a competition. Competitive nature is the best thing that can drive you. So, I feel like just wanting to win, or wanting to be better, just having a kind of a dog mindset will put you where you need to be.”

And hopefully that ends at state.
