Positive: They just refreshed gym equipment and flooring.
Negative: Likely used cheaper, high VOC toxic emit off gas rubber flooring brand.
Members: Ask 24 to post the brand of flooring used so we members can attend gym with informed consent of VOC air given entire gym is re floored.
Rubber floor mats can be harmful if they contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates, or heavy metals. While high-quality mats made from natural or synthetic rubber are generally safe, low-quality or inexpensive mats may emit toxic chemicals and contribute to indoor air pollution.
Breathing VOCs can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, can cause difficulty breathing and nausea, and can damage the central nervous system and other organs. Some VOCs can cause cancer. (Lung.org)
Off-gassing doesn't stop when the smell stops. The 'new smell' may disappear after a week or so but the fumes are still being emitted - they're just much more subtle. Off-gassing can last between six months and five years depending on the household item and the chemicals used to treat it.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 3 - Bill B.Oakland, CA0327Apr 24, 2024Updated review
Since the "glow up", where the gym closed to allegedly improve it, they have replaced all the barbells, but left out the mid weights. It's only weights that end in zeros, no 5s.
There is now only one bicep machine. ONE. They replaced a very effective bicep machine because it wasn't pretty enough. The new one has a ridiculously limited range of motion. All of this just in time for summer. So you can forget suns out guns out in this gym. My best advice would be to invest in long sleeve shirts.
This new downgrade was designed 100% by either a choreographer, or someone who does not have the end goal in mind. It's all show. The machines are perfectly lined up, it looks like a Broadway musical with a gym scene is about to take place. Richard Simmons would be proud. Sadly, the machines themselves will not improve your body. They're not for your look; they are for the gym's look. Not one machine in this new gym goes past the level of a machine you would find in a Marriott or an apartment gym.
In summary, this is the perfect gym for my grandma, who passed away in 1998. RIP, grandma, and RIP this damn gym. This is a gym for girls that they let guys into. Get machines for guys.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jul 3, 2023Previous reviewThe crowded factor- It's an absolute deal breaker. If you don't belong yet, I recommend a different gym. I belong here and I work right next door, it it almost never anything less than completely overflowing in every aspect and by any measure.
Holidays, Sundays, weeknights, almost any time but 3 am this place is oversold. I've belonged to 24 for decades, this gym has become unusable. I think I can make it in early enough, but in a regular basis, 3:30 am is just not doable.
I give it 3 stars because the showers are nice, it has a pool and a full court basketball gym, and high, high ceilings. - Kris K.Moraga, CA08Aug 20, 2024
It's absolute Thunderdome in this gym. Very nice equipment that you can't access. So far oversold it's ridiculous. No employee presence on the floor whatsoever. People just sitting on their cell phones taking up space that people coming to the gym to work out could otherwise be using. It's five minutes from my house and I drive an extra 15 minutes both ways so I don't have to work out here.

Ok hmm eeeehhhh .... ugggghhhh welll ..... I like this gym but it is quite dirty .. eeww .. The pool area is so smelly yikes.... But I love the set up upstairs & downstairs. Women's bathroom is not as bad as the el Cerrito location. Worth the 20+ min drive I guess.

What happened to this place? The remodel seemed good enough at first. But for some reason I find myself having to go upstairs and back down far too much. And finding matching dumbells between the weights of 25-45 is like searching for Atlantis.
And on a personal level. Place is a sausage fest now. 90% of the cute women left. Which is very uninspiring. Probably going to leave soon..Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 2 - Nicholas B.Boston, MA13626Jan 15, 2024
I've been coming to this gym for about a year and a few months now and I will say that it is very disappointing. When you have machines that don't work month after month without getting fixed you begin to wonder if they ever will get fixed.
Please see examples of three treadmills that have been out of commission for at least 3-4 weeks.Helpful 5Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - David S.Walnut Creek, CA341539Nov 1, 2023
There's not equipment at this gym but not enough equipment and a few of them had it adding order sign on them. Parking is terrible always very hard to find a good spot to park at. Is it the most amazing gym in the world no but it's decent and I'm happy with the value I get from the low annual price.
The people at the front desk do not greet you high or by when you come to work out or leave which is unfortunate. They're mostly sitting around just being available not sure what they're doing.
I definitely think they should definitely have more top notch machines and always fix what's not working in a more timely faster manner.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Vee P.Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, CA33013Jun 24, 2024
Since the renovations have been completed, this place has been nicely up kept. Nice machine selection and a ton of equipment

I had not been to this gym in a while and recently returned to check it out. What a disappointment. They supposedly remodeled this gym, but the "updates" make it look exactly the same, and in some cases worse.
This was my experience:
-The cardio machines are on the second floor, and it was hot up there. Only part of the upstairs space had A/C and the area of the treadmill that I was on probably had A/C technically turned "on", but it was at least 80 degrees.
-They replaced the treadmills with the cheapest treadmills on the market. They are similar to the ones that the old rundown apartment complexes have. Very basic, no TV's, fewer features. I have gone to Crunch Gym for the past 2 years and can easily run several miles. I could barely last two MINUTES on these treadmills. I had the hardest time ever, running at this 24 Hour Fitness, and then ran 3x as much with ease the next day when I went back to Crunch. There is something wrong with these new treadmills. These new (yet cheap) treadmills also caused me to develop knee pain and shin splints; an issue that I have never had before. My treadmill seemed to be calibrated at a slight incline and I was never able to fully feel like I was running on a flat surface. 24 Hour Fitness obviously prioritized cutting costs vs. quality.
Beware: if you are having a hard time walking or running on the treadmills at this gym, it could very well be the treadmills - not you. 24 Hour Fitness could be sabotaging your workout with the poor quality equipment, that is causing you to believe that you are more out of shape than you really are, or developing injuries more quickly.
-There are no light weights in the group exercise room. I have never been to any other gym, other than this one, where there are 0 five pound weights, and from what I recall, not many of the 7.5 pound weights either. I asked about this at the front desk in the past and they said that their members are thieves and steal weights. That's pretty frustrating If you work out here then just know that you are surrounded by criminals. Other gyms near by have weights in stock and don't have an issue of theft. I guess that it makes sense that this is one of the cheapest gyms around, and that may attract certain types of people.
-The gym is always more crowded than other gyms, especially during peak hours.
I had a very negative experience here overall. As I noted above, I was BARELY able to run 1 mile here due to the poor quality treadmills and heat (look up "Matrix treadmills" and you will see that a lot of people have issues with them), and the next day I went to a different gym nearby (Crunch) where it was much cooler (A/C worked) and normal/nicer treadmills and I easily ran 3 miles. This means that my level of fitness would be negatively impacted if I worked out at 24 Hour Fitness on a regular basis. Their "remodel" was more like a "hey we are going to make everything as cheap as possible and try to communicate this as a positive thing to trick our members into thinking we are investing in them!".Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 25, 20246 check-ins
This is one of the nicer 24 Hour Fitness facilities. It's especially nice because it's open 24 hours. Which is one of the few that actually still is 24hrs. For the most part, this facility is maintained. Except for no toilet paper in one of the bathroom stalls. I can't really complain. The staff is friendly and engaging.
