The co-workers and I had wanted to do an urban hike and we decided to hike from our office in downtown San Mateo to Barrel House in Burlingame. When we had arrived, we had just gotten there half an hour after it opened, so it wasn't as crowded and we were able to get the bartender's attention. Shout to the bartender who was working last Friday afternoon!
The group of 9 of is was sitting outside so the outside atmosphere was pleasant. They had suggested sitting inside, but it was a little on the dark side for an afternoon and the heat from baking empandas was boiling me under a thick sweater after the walk.
We had order several of their cocktails and I had order a coconut mojito. I don't go out much to drink, so I'm not the best judge to talk about drink, but the mojito was very easy to drink and the coconut and lemony-ness was very tasty. We also order two of every savory empanda that was listed on the menu. Unfortunately, they did not have any tomato empandas when we were there, but that means another reason to go back! The empandas very good as they had just gotten out of the oven, but next time I'm not going to share with co-workers (sorry guys!) Each type of empanadas was very delicious and I would come back again just for them.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 13, 2015
Great time at the Barrel House. Great drink selection, modern decor and good appetizers. Definitely a hot spot on the weekends! Good food, + good drinks = a good time

Barrel House is the best Burlingame has to offer no matter what the time of day! They have a selection that covers all bases including some quality beers, wines, and spirits. Variety is important when trying to please everyone.
The ambiance is great. Love the lighting. Light music allows for a great place to mingle with friends and chat. It can get loud at the peak times due to a larger crowd but that's to be expected and desired, at least for me. I personally want to go where the popular places are and where others enjoy going. There is a back patio with heat lamps if needed which is always a plus!
The staff are young, energetic individuals who always have their A game going. The male bartenders are handsome and the lady tenders are drop dead gorgeous! Always a double plus!
The prices are reasonable and affordable considering you are in a downtown environment with great restaurants surrounding you that will charge a tad more for the same drinks.
P.S. When the booze starts taking effect and you feel like something a little more like a lounge or club, head over to the Vinyl Room a couple of blocks up the Avenue (2/3 mins walking distance) for another good experience. Same owners = same delightful experience! Hope this helps, highly recommend. Cheers!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Ryan S.San Jose, CA815814Dec 9, 2016
Hosted drinks at Barrel House for my team. Beer selection and drink selection was decent, however they were out of almost everything we asked for (barrel aged cocktails and certain beers) or were unwilling to make the drinks because it was "too much work" (Mexican coffee or hot totty).
If that is not enough to justify a 2 star rating then I should mention that the service was abysmal. While the staff was nice they refused to serve our group of 10 drinking off of one tab and made everyone go to the bar to order one by one. Then when I settled the bill they automatically charged me a 20% tip!!! For what?!? Turns out they automatically charge a 20% tip for orders over $100. So in other words the more business you give the Barrel Room and the less service you get the more you get charged. When I complained about this to the bartender, she acted rude and with a sense of entitlement.
I am always happy to tip the waitstaff, but tips are earned and not given. Clean up your act Barrel House. Not likely to go back....Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

There is no other local bar on the peninsula quiet like this place. The decor consists of accent walls made of hand scorched pieces of old scrap wood, a beautiful bar front of illuminated pennies, cool dim lighting, and my personal favorite... LOTS AND LOTS of booze to choose from.
Specially craft beers are rotated in and out on tap, an always expanding wine list, delicious cocktail menu, and lets not forget the service. My favorite bartender to chat up while I'm there is Will. He's friendly, hilarious, and makes a stiff cocktail. What's not to love??
Other perks: outdoor seating complete with patio furniture and heat lamps, you can order directly from Straits next door complete with deliver, or you can always just walk through the gate over to Blue Line Pizza. Barrel House is definitely my go to bar on the peninsula.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - mary c.Grass Valley, CA11651Jan 20, 2017

This review goes for both bars - Barrel House and its sister bar, Vinyl. I was here last Friday with a small group of coworkers. We were told we had to finish our drinks and be out by 7pm due to a private party. Fine, I get that. To compensate, the bartender gave us some "drink tokens" to use at their sister bar, Vinyl Room. When we clarified what these tokens were for, they told us any drink at Vinyl. 7pm rolls around and some of us wanted to grab another drink. We figured why not since we have some tokens! We walked over to Vinyl and ordered a Stella beer. The bartender gave me the price $7 and I proceeded to pay with my token. She rudely tells me that the token was only for "Bud Light" and happy hour drinks. I looked at the token and nowhere was there any language or stipulations as to what I can order. When I told her this, she states "sorry!". I proceeded to pay with my credit card and once again, she rudely tells me I need a $20 minimum. Being that I was only having one drink, I was not going to keep my card open. Unfortunately I also didn't have cash. She rolled her eyes. I had enough and walked out, leaving my full beer.
Long story short, I'm fine with Barrel House kicking us out at 7pm and it's attempt to compensate with free drink tokens (but not not ok wattitude). In the future, be specific and have better communication with your sister bartenders. Oh, and maybe a conversation around politeness would also be helpful...

Hopefully you saw my response to the review you left for Vinyl Room, but in case you didn't I want to extend my sincere apologies on the confusion and complications you encountered while visiting. We promise to ensure proper communication between both bars and give the best service possible. Send me a private message. I would love to send you a $25 gift certificate for Barrelhouse! - Mike B.San Mateo, CA1010Dec 14, 2012
Barrel house is the only bar I go to on the Peninsula. The staff treats everyone like family and they always have great drink specials.
A group of co-workers and I love to unwind after a long day at the office over a couple drinks poured by polite servers.
Also, the location is perfect! Near the poplar Burlingame Ave, Airport Hotels, and the train station.
See you soon Barel House!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stephanie H.Foster City, CA2211Jan 6, 2018
Use to enjoy coming here for happy hour with my coworkers. I recently had a baby and didn't realize my sleeping 3 month old strapped on me would be an issue. I thought it would be like going to any other restaurant after work where I can enjoy some appetizers at the tables. The bartender was initially nice when he asked me to leave. Since we were in a large group (11 of us), there were 3 tabs opened and so I was waiting for everyone to close out their tabs. Six minutes later, he came by the table again but this time rudely telling me to leave even when he can see we were all packed up but just standing around WAITING FOR THEM to finish with the bills. It was raining outside. I didn't want to stand outside in the rain with a 3 month old but that's what he made me do while they took another 10 minutes to finish closing all the tabs. That was completely HEARTLESS! Although I understood why he was asking me to leave, he told my coworker it is common sense to not bring a baby to a bar. Obviously not and super RUDE that he even said that! We all thought it was ok bc we were there before a week and half earlier with my baby and it wasn't an issue. Places like Fieldwork and Drake's Brewing (Drake's Barrel House) allow children so why would it be common sense for us to think having a 3 month old would be an issue for after work hang out and snacks.
