I don't think you could be any safer in Oakland than at this Buttercup. Legions of police folks are here at any given moment. It's more upscale than Buttercup in Jack London Square, but it's the same stuff on the menu. I was hoping it would be more loungey, but I think all the uniforms present cut down on that possibility.

I have just received an email from the owners of Buttercup. After being at this location for about 25 years, the property owners have decided to redevelop the area.

Sad to say that Buttercup has lost the lease and their last day of business is September 25, 2022. I always enjoy the Buttercup for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I will miss this venue (with ample parking) and their employees.

Definitely my husband and I will visit and dine there before they close permanently.

Its an ol school diner out in east oakland, off the 23rd avenue exit...on the alameda side

Very chill, very ma & pa kind place ...sort of like a dennys

Not a huge dining room area but roomy enough to have an area with a bar

It is good for brunch and dinner because they have a variety of eats on their menu ..enough for the whole family to choose from

      Generous portions, incredible staff.

I thought I was popping in for a convenient/quick dinner and drinks before a show, but am wicked impressed with this ButtercuP!

First off, shout out to our rockstar server, Julie, who kept us well-fed and generously assisted us in crafting our own cocktail requests! We are still talking about how well you took care of us!

We ended up over ordering because we did not realize that all their dishes are "family sizes!" However, that gave us the excuse to order more cocktails, so we did not mind.

Would recommend the mozzarella sticks, nachos and any of their incredible desserts (check then out as you walk past the dessert case on your way to be seated)!

Leaving happier (and heavier) for the dining experience ;)

If you stop by, give Julie a high five for me!

Decided to come here because we were specifically looking for dog-friendly outdoor dining. There are limited spaces outside compared to their large dining room, but it was chilly and we were seated immediately.

Staff was super friendly! One waitress who wasn't even our server brought out a bowl of water for our puppy after she rudely barked at a fellow patron who walked past our table. She then barked at the staff member (sorry about that again, we are still trying to socialize our pandemic pup)!

Food came out quickly despite being busy inside. HUGE portions. We felt like the only ones there while dining! It did get busier outside when it stated to warm up as we finished our meal.

      We ordered:

Michelada - standard but was refreshing nonetheless, love the Tajin spice blend around the rim of the glass!
Hazelnut latte - perfect to keep me warm on the chilly patio! -1 because they didn't have dairy alternative milk options.
Chicken fried steak and eggs - delicious, but way to heavy for an everyday breakfast. I'd get this to share or for leftovers.
Linguiça Benedict - ummm yes. I only ate half and needed a long bike ride to digest it later, but would not hesitate to order again if I find myself at this or another Buttercup location.

We also ordered a frosted cinnascuit and coffee cake to go. It's mid afternoon and we are still too full to try it, but they still look good after the trip home in their to-go boxes.

Good standard diner fare. I've tried several entrees from here so far: California burger, Prime Rib, Caesar salad with blackened salmon, and one of their pastas. Prices range from about $13 to $25 for dishes. My favorite was the Prime Rib (about $24) for a nicely cooked slab that was also tender and juicy. It comes with 2 sides, bread/roll, and a side salad (caesar or house). They're also known for their dessert pies and baked muffins. Very popular spot for weekend brunch too. This location is in a secluded industrial area, next to the 880 Freeway. You might cross over a freeway exit, and/or have to make an immediate turn from the freeway or opposite direction, so be alert and careful driving while getting here. They have their own private parking lot so there's plenty of space. Attached photo is the Reuben sandwich which my friend really enjoyed.

Was in the mood for a piece of pie so ordered online and when I arrived my order was in a bag on the counter. Didn't open it up in store but when I got home there was a long hair. I went back, they gave me a new one but never even said anything no apology or explanation... no refund it was just here you go, have a good weekend. I will never order any food here again.

Soooo good! Yumm, ordered for breakfast through Uber eats. So convenient and still warm!

Delicious. The O'Brien potatoes were perfectly seasoned, you can literally see the flavor jump out in the photos! Great serving size, I'd order this side again and again.

Scrumptious. I devoured the eggs and sausage as soon as I took the top off! Smelled so good and cooked like a homemade meal.

And for the grand finale.... these amazing, unbelievable churro waffles!! OK I slowed down for this one. The delicious, cinnamony smell alone was enough for me to sing Buttercup's praises! But then you add the soft butter and syrupy syrup too? BAB-EEE! I went IN... Order this y'all!! Leave all your regrets and 2020 behind, this is what breakfast/brunch is all about. This is what we've been waiting for. Heaven.

I cannot wait to dine in or outdoors here when we can!

Every time I'm on vacation I love to write reviews because I depend on other reviews when finding a place to eat.
Loved that this spot was open early..walked in to order take out at 7:45am and Micky assisted me.
Ordered French toast combo with sausage and eggs. Our second plate was the eggs Benedict. Both plates were delicious for a quick morning breakfast. Waited about 15-20 min for my food. DEFINITELY check your order... they forgot my fruit and my drinks and was only given 1 fork and knife and we had two plates. That's my reason for a 4 star rating. Place looked big inside and clean.

Sadly, I'm lowering my review to 2.5stars based on breakfast service on Sunday 6/16/19. Service was minimal (to non-existent) compared to previous visits...and the breakfast special: chicken and waffles was not good!

Chicken strips were either freezer burned, over cooked or re-heated as chicken was tough, dry and like a piece of leather! The waffle was nice, fluffy with a nice crispness and my friend enjoyed his eggs benedict.

Our server (server: 12) seemed uninterested being there and didn't take much initiative...had to ask for coffee refills, more napkins, to correct an order, the check...basically, no follow up and/or slow...this was from 8-9am and it wasn't even busy with maybe 5 tables.

Overall, prefer this location over the JLSquare but service and chicken and waffles (this day) not good...definitely, didn't satisfy the crave. I'll return as I understand off days, no complaints in the past and location convenient to meet friends...hopefully, we'll be seated towards the front as those servers seem much more efficient.

The food here has gone downhill. Blame covid, inflation, employee abuse. But there is no excuse for the disgusting presentation of shrimp and grits.
You just need to spend a few minutes peeling the shrimp completely, then wrapping them up in bacon, crispying them properly. You don't need to submerge them in that bland, watery (marinara?) sauce.
