Chome is a cozy izakaya offering a delightful Japanese dining experience. I highly recommend coming for their happy hour!

Pro-tip: check in on Yelp to get the cutest mini pineapple beer cocktails!

As soon as you step inside, you are greeted by a colorful and festive ambiance, with banners hanging from the ceiling and posters adorning the walls. It's a smaller space, so tables are close together.

My friend and I came Wednesday afternoon around 5:15 and there was plenty of seating available.

The menu at Chome is extensive, offering a wide variety of options to choose from. During our visit, we decided to take advantage of their fantastic happy hour deals, which are available from 5-6 pm every day and also during late night hours starting at 9 or 9:30, depending on the day.

The pineapple beer cocktail was amazing. I'm not a beer person at all, but somehow when it's mixed with a pineapple reduction the way they do it here, it was SO tasty. Would highly recommend since I've never seen this anywhere else!

We started our meal with a complimentary potato salad, which set the tone for the rest of the evening. The sushi nuggies and treasure chicken, both priced at $8 during happy hour, were flavorful and satisfying. The sushi nuggies were made with spicy salmon instead of spicy tuna on the day we came, which I had no problems with as I prefer salmon anyways. We also indulged in the yuzu miso trio and unagi avocado handrolls ($5 each during hh), which were both delicious and bigger than I expected.

I was starving when I came, so we also ordered the garlic chili tonkotsu ramen ($20) to share, since I wasn't sure if the happy hour food portions would be enough. In retrospect, just the happy hour food would've been enough, and the ramen was a bit overkill, but I'm happy I tried it. The tonkotsu ramen was deliciously garlicky with just a kick of spice, and surprisingly the broth was a bit on the sweeter side.

Overall, Chome is a gem in the Mission district, offering a large menu selection, great happy hour deals, and a cozy atmosphere. Whether you're looking for a quick bite or a leisurely meal, Chome is definitely worth a visit.

Not bad but not good. Came here for happy hour (5-6PM) but it was still kind of pricey. If you are in the area it's ok, but there are way better places out there.

Food: 7.5/10 Nigiri sampler was good except for the scallops. The scallops were slimy and mushy. Handrolls were good but $5 for a tiny bite.

Service: 7/10 Probably understaffed but it was super slow for all our sushi. Cooked items came out faster than the raw fish.

Ambiance: 8/10 Cute atmosphere with lots of decoration. It was a very casual environment.

      Parking: 6/10 Street parking only

      CHECK YOUR RECEIPT!!!

This one star is for the fact we were overcharged. I've been to Chome twice now. The first time was with a group of 7 for a birthday. We ordered off the regular menu and the food was good but like most Izakaya restaurants, a bit pricey. My friend took care of the check so I didn't get a chance to look at the receipt then.

The second time coming here we came for happy hour. The food was still good and the prices were decent, but now looking at the receipt I realize we were overcharged. I did read another review similar to this so we should've been more cautious. Basically they tax you on TOP of the SF Mandate, and our total tax came out to be 13.7%...

They responded to the previous Yelp review so the fact that they know about this and still continue to do it is a bit concerning. While their food was good, I don't think I will be dining here again and I highly encourage everyone to check their receipts before paying.

      --

Okay I was able to check our previous receipt which also had the 20% large party fee (automatic gratuity) and we were definitely charged more than 20%, and more than 6% for the mandate...

Came here right at opening time on a Friday during Outside Lands weekend and the small place filled up super quickly. The vibes are cute and it's adorably decorated with Japanese trinkets and art inside. We came specifically for the happy hour deals - I preferred the nigiri over the hand rolls. The toro and hamachi samplers were the best (also the most expensive lol). The skewers were cooked well and the pineapple beer was quite good considering I don't really like beer. The highballs just tasted like sprite but their lychee sake (comes from a bottle) was yummy. This place is probably slammed during the weekend nights so come early or super late if you don't want to wait too long!

Haven't been to the old location but this new location was great! Quite a few interesting/cute food options on th menu, plus a good sake list. Some of my fave dishes were the fried mushrooms, pork belly skewers, and the seared tuna. But my absolute favorite I'd return for is the mini taiyaki dessert!! Absolutely incredible and nailed the flavor combinations.

The only kind of strange thing was the music selection playing in the background! I think I heard every genre of music in the two hours I was there. This place really leans in to the eclectic vibe.

Another great izakaya found in SF!

Everything is delicious. I highly recommend their oxtail omurice ( egg omulete and sweet gravy w/soft oxtail that falls off the bone).

My other favorites are the chicken cartilage, and all the handrolls. Chicken cartilage has a lot of meat and super tender. The handrolls, specially the yuzu miso trio, are refreshing and big in portion.

They have a huge menu selection and I would be sure to visit again to try other new items.

Ideally, I'd give this place a 3.5/5, but I'm rounding up.

Chome was a fun spot for a casual Japanese dinner with a friend. We went on a weekend night, and the place was buzzing! Luckily, we snagged a table right away. Be prepared for close quarters, though - it's a small restaurant, and with all the cool Japanese flags, action figures, posters, and sake bottles lining the walls, it can feel a bit crowded.

Speaking of cool, a big shoutout to Chome for the freebies! We checked in on Yelp and got mini pineapple beers each - a refreshing way to start the meal. They even threw in a little potato salad on the house (they do it for all their customers), which was decent, though nothing super special.

Now, onto the main event: the food! My friend and I shared a few things. The clear winner was the Duck Duck Udon Carbonara. It was fantastic! Rich and creamy sauce, perfectly chewy udon noodles, and flavorful duck with a hint of spice - all the elements came together beautifully. However, the portion size left me wanting a bit more.

We also tried the Hokkaido Uni (sea urchin) and Tsukiji Rolls. The uni itself was fresh and delicious, but the rice was a tad undercooked, which was a bit of a bummer. Same story with the Tsukiji rolls - good flavors overall, but the rice needed a little more time. The Hon Maguro (bluefin tuna) was interesting. The fish itself was great quality, but the slices were very thin. I ended up just eating the fish and leaving the rice (again, slightly undercooked).

Despite the rice consistency issues with some dishes, the service at Chome was excellent. Our server was fast, friendly, and attentive.

Overall, Chome is a good spot for a fun and quirky Japanese dining experience, especially if you're a fan of creative takes on classics like the duck udon carbonara. Just be prepared for a potentially crowded scene and slightly smaller portions on some dishes.

Delicious Japanese izakaya with fast service and very unique small plates. The sizzling chu toro was delicious and the fried durian was a great dessert. The complimentary amuse bouche was delicious - potato salad. The skewers were also great - especially the chicken and egg yolk. I wanna come back and try more - super big menu. Atmosphere was modern and fun.
