This is a great affordable music center in a convenient part of the city. This place is easy to find and parking can usually be found within 10-15 min. on the street. They also have a sliding scale tuition - a great incentive for anyone to learn music!

I like the variety of music lessons that they offer here and the lesson times are easy to schedule. I have only taken Cello lessons so far and they were pretty good. The staff at the front desk are helpful and I was refunded part of my registration fee because I could not continue for another semester due to my schedule. That was really nice of them!

Check this place out if you are curious and want to touch up or learn new musical instruments.

Hey Musicians! Have you wanted to improve your skills in performance/playing in a group ensemble? Community Music Center offers a very friendly and safe environment to explore your creativity or improv skills! It was my first experience taking an intro to jazz ensemble with Charlie Gurke. Charlie is an amazing professional with many years of experience playing/teaching with ensembles. His expertise helped me tremendously not only with improv, but to also look at each new piece of music in a new and creative way. He also gave us very valuable practice skills, as well as how to more easily approach a tune that may seem intimidating.

We've been involved with CMC during various phases in our family. My kids took lessons here but are not aspiring musicians and one quit after middle school and the other way earlier that that. It's expensive to pay for piano lessons if your child is really not interested and we could've used that money towards kinetic activities which was more in line with what they preferred. Not all the teachers were patient with the kids and our youngest had a bad attitude and went through 3 teachers. The first instructor was a brilliant musician but was curt and impatient with him most of the time. The second instructor, another brilliant musician, asked us not to bring him back on a couple of visits. The 3rd instructor was the most patient with him but it really wasn't his cup of tea and we finally agreed there was no purpose served to keep trying to enlighten him.

I have been taking adult choir lessons 4.5 years now with a CMC instructor, Ms. Wilmurt, who is just fabulous and everyone in our group classes adore and love her. She also teaches a young children's choir and the kids love her too. No instructor wants a student who is unmotivated, lacks commitment and is uncooperative. So judge carefully if you think your child or yourself are suited to take music classes. It is a big commitment but well worth the time and effort if you're truly engaged and open-minded to learn music.

It was my first time at this school so I went to the front desk to figure out where to go and the guy at the reception was super friendly and very helpful. The campus itself is charming and spotless. Decided to try out the piano jazz labs with Erick Peralta and so far it's fantastic. The quality of his teaching is great and in depth. I am an adult learner who got into music late but this school seems to be really open to that and encourages all ages to learn. I'm really grateful I decided to try it out :)

I will be honest: the idea of taking piano lessons for the first time as an adult was both an exhilarating and frightening prospect. Luckily for me, one of my good friends recommended that I check out the Community Music Center, and overall, I had an excellent experience!

My instructor was Erick Peralta, and he covered both music theory and piano technique with patience and great skill. I thought that he paced the classes well, and the only reason I stopped working with him is due to leaving the Bay Area. I also appreciated how he integrated and referenced modern pop music while also making sure I learned piano standards.

Finding practice piano rooms can be a challenge during peak instruction periods, but more often than not, I could find an open piano to practice right before my early afternoon classes. There were also some minor communication snafus when I tried to register for classes, but generally, staff at the center were welcoming and friendly.

      FYI for practice rooms

I don't like being treated unfairly. I signed up to do something about my bad singing. The teacher at first was good, but I sensed that she came to not want to teach me.

Nicole called me after vacation and said it was my lesson time. I was surprised and had to get ready. When I came back. She was eating a cinnamon roll on zoom and she started screaming at me, then hung up the call. I called back on the phone to ask what happened and she screamed at me more and hung up. I texted her "unprofessional".

Then Nicole said things about me to the director, Julie.

Julie told me I was removed from the school. She would not say why. She said it would not be good for me to take lessons with anyone in CMC or anywhere else.

I know that I suck. I know they don't want to have a student who sucks. But, i did practice hard and, although my singing was bad, it started to get a little better. I don't think I was a bad student. I tried hard and wanted to suck less.

      Unprofessional, dishonest, unreasonable.

TERRIBLE first impression. BEING BLACK IS NOT WELCOMED HERE :-(

I've waited many months (COVID) to take my child for lessons. After finally speaking with the director, we had an official start date. The director was friendly; however, I felt like I asked too many questions (judging by the look on her face). She was still nice though. I wanted to ensure my child's safety while learning, so I asked appropriate questions about how the lessons are conducted (open door or closed door). It is open-door which works for our family!

The receptionist IS A RACIST!!! Despite the director stating I could sit in on the visit, the receptionist (Latin female) refused me this opportunity!!! She gave some crap excuse citing that "no parents are allowed in the lessons." I waited patiently in the lobby for my Kindergartener. Another parent (white male) came to pick up his child and was invited back to join his child's lesson. The receptionist said not a word. She did not give him the same spiel that she gave me at all. She ignored my concerns about fairness. I was not going to make a scene and I left without saying more. This receptionist should NOT be working with children, especially being RACIST and UNFAIR!

We are looking for a new music school where diversity is celebrated. This is not the right fit for our multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-racial family.

This would be a great place, if they were able to accommodate single parents who only have their children every other week. Another thing that is inconvenient is that they only allow you to reschedule if the teacher misses a class, but you as a student cannot and still get charged. It would also be great if a teacher can text or call as well instead of emails only because not all parents or students have access to emails or even check it daily. The good thing is they offer financial assistance and there are SOME great teachers, but not all are GREAT!!!!

This place is amazing. The only problem is that many parts of the building are not disability-friendly. There is a smooth path from the street to the buildings, but one of the buildings has all the problems of a Victorian house. It is only accessible via stairs, there are more stairs inside, narrow halls, many turns to negotiate, and tiny bathrooms reachable by stair. There are some other areas that are flat and roomy, with flat entrances.

The office staff are so helpful that it is likely they would work to make arragements to meet the needs of people with disabilities.

CMC is a fun and pleasant place. The teachers are all professional musicians who seem happy to be there. The quality of teaching is excellent. There are individual and group lessons for many different instruments musicsl. CMC offers many classes for kids, and a few classes for adults. Private lessons are available to all.

CMC fees are flexible for those with lower incomes. The regular fees are comparable to most other music schools and teachers. Discounted fees are within the range of most people. There is even a free adult choir!

If you are disabled or unsure whether you could afford lessions, call or write CMC to see what accomadations can be made.

I have been to many performances and community events at the Mission branch and they always have a friendly, festive vibe with talented performers. Many of the events are free or very affordable. I get the sense that this place really serves the community in the Mission, as the musicians seem very age, race, and class diverse. They have a wide variety of lessons to choose from and cools classes like Feldenkrais for musicians or Musical Storytime for little ones. Highly recommended!

This mission gem is an amazing resource for San Francisco residents who want to study music. There are teachers and resource s for private lessons for all ages and a great performance space as well. There is a jazz ensemble program where you get to work with talented professional jazz musicians who help guide the group into learning how to learn the songs and how to play as an ensemble. To me this is an amazing community resource that should be taken advantage of cherished and supported.
