Currency Exchange International

I've been here twice within the past six months for euros and most recently for Japanese Yen, and I've received excellent service on both occasions. I used to frequent the Currency Exchange International in Berkeley at Mechanics Bank, but that location has since closed. Although I have to travel a bit farther now, I'm still grateful to have this location available for foreign currency exchange.

I usually take Bart here to avoid the terrible SF traffic. What's nice is that this office is located at the main entrance of the Westfield Centre, making it super easy to reach from the Powell Street Bart Station. It's easy to reserve your foreign currency online ahead of time. They'll send an email letting you know when the money is ready to be picked up and will usually hold it for about a week. I haven't walked in without a prior reservation, so I'm not sure how that works. I find it easier to reserve the money ahead of time and it's usually ready for pickup with 3-5 days.

As far as the exchange rate goes, I wouldn't say that it's the best in the world. But for my peace of mind, i'd rather enter a different country with some foreign cash on hand already. I've been lucky enough to not have to exchange any leftover foreign currency back to US dollars, so I haven't taken a major hit with the exchange rate. They accept cash or card for exchange and the fees aren't too bad.

Bas, Max, and Steve have all been a wonderful help during my past visits. They have all been fast, quick, and friendly. This place has truly been convenient for me and it has become my go-to shop when it comes to exchanging foreign currency.

I usually go here whenever I need money for my international trips! Super convenient process and they always have the currency that I'm looking for. You can place your money order online and then pick it up here when they have it. They will give you a call once your money is ready. Or you can call in advance and ask if they have your currency available.

Fair conversion rates (for SF). Much much better than at Wells Fargo, which gives scammy rates. Efficient.

I went to exchange US dollars to Euros and Bas assisted me. He was very helpful , the transaction took few minutes and I was very happy w the service. I love that the location is open until 8 pm daily.

Had the euros on hand that I needed. Exchange rate is decent enough. Nice staff and fast in and out. Glad there's a current place here still.

Note, their office is on the lower level (concourse) by GNC. From Market, I would take the BART entrance by Market @5th or by the Cable turnaround and look for the entrance to the mall. When I finally found their office, the transaction went smoothly since I had pre-ordered money.

SCAM and RIPOFF! STAY AWAY! Gave $500 USD for Vietnamese Dong and what I really got was $315 worth of money they rip you off hard here. They don't tell you the actual rate only the "private business rate" which is insanely lower. Most places have the commercial vs private rates displayed but here no and they don't tell you so that you are blind to the fact just how much they are ripping you off and profiting off you. Go to an actual bank if you want an exchange but avoid here.

Make sure to park on the side of Mechanics Bank for free while you go here! Quick and efficient and you get your money same day if it's a reasonable amount and a currency that is relatively common. Reasonable rates and would rather go here than other places.
