East Bay Restaurant Supply

Maybe you invited the whole neighborhood for a crawfish boil and need a 30 quart pot. Maybe the no-good roommate you kicked out took all your kitchen stuff. Or maybe you want to see a giant polar bear. All of these needs can be satisfied by going to the East Bay Restaurant Supply, which is open to the public.

Before you drop a ton of dough at Sur La Table, go to EBRS and browse an entire warehouse of cookware, kitchen gadgets, cutlery, generic dishware, etc. I've filled my shopping basket with what I needed plus a few impulse buys, and my total has yet to go over $60--similar purchases at a shop like Sur La Table would probably run anywhere from $20-$40 over that. Serious bakers who buy from the Baker's Catalog will find a lot of the specialty baking pans here. In addition to restaurant kitchen, front of house, and janitorial supplies, EBRS carries professional quality home equipment by Kitchenaid, Le Creuset, All Clad, etc. but these are not at a deep discount. People who spend all day on their feet should check out the selection of chef clogs and shoes which aren't fashion forward but made for ultra comfort. This is a fantastic place to shop when you're getting ready for a big party or for BBQ season. If you're remodeling and want a professional gas range (or a nacho machine), you can find a lot of used appliances here, too.

Depending on which staff member helps you, non-professionals might get a gruff response to questions, but that shouldn't keep you away from this store...really! The place may be difficult to find when driving because I-880 cuts off some streets, but once you're there they have plenty of parking. It's also a mere 10 minute walk from the Lake Merritt BART station.

Finally, the best thing you can't buy at the East Bay Restaurant Supply is the taxidermy of a GIANT polar bear they got when they were buying out everything from a restaurant many years ago. I highly recommend bringing a camera so you can get a picture with the bear.

Home cook here. The store had absolutely everything I needed--including some regular consumer goods I could've gotten on Amazon-- at unbeatable prices!

This place in incredible. I was looking for a No2 Canister to create my foams and sauces. I called and they said they had several.
When I walked in it was like a kid in a candy store with thousands of items from dishes, cast iron pans, massive commercial cooking equipment, 10 gallon pots, and everything for the restaurant industry. The staff were fantastic and when you buy something, if you have an issue you can bring it back without any issues.

Prices are good and for a chef's one stop and shop, you'll definitely drain your bank account if you don't control yourself!
