I made the mistake of getting a 10-times swim pass card, anticipating that I would be able to swim until the end of September. Well, we are past the first half of September now and I have not been able to use my pass. The heater is broken and the water in the swimming pool is very cold.
The administration makes no attempt to accommodate the community. The pool is open in the morning for a lap swim which makes no sense. The warmer parts of the day are in the afternoon, so the water doesn't warm up until 1:30 PM when they close the pool. Also, the weight room opens up at 6 PM so you cannot coordinate workouts. Oh, and the pool is closed on Saturdays and Sundays when most people have free time to use it.
Why not open the pool from 4 pm-6 pm, and on weekends, so people could enjoy warmer water and then use the gym? Please, either make a more sensible schedule or refund my money!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Sep 15, 2019Previous reviewThis pool is getting crowded and very unpleasant! Now that the school year has started, Emeryhigh is scheduling their swimming classes for high schoolers during the two-hour timeslots designated for community swimming.
It is bad enough that we pay $6 and only get to swim for 2 hours, but now the high school is taking two or three of the lanes and everybody else is squished together in the few remaining lanes.
It is impossible to get a good swim any more. People are pushing you and splashing you, nobody respects slow, fast and medium speeds, 4 swimmers breathing at each other's necks in a lane.
There is always a long wait for the showers in a FILTHY locker room. While standing you have to resort to some contortionist's movements to get your wet bathing suit off. Hair and puddles on the floor, grime everywhere, toilets that don't flush, and the latest new development - black crawling bugs on the walls! The bugs inch slowly towards you and if you are not paying attention, they attack you. One of the women was just saying, "Oh the bugs are probably harmless, they are fruit flyes probably..." when one of them flew right up her nose, and she started panicking.
These are NOT fruit flyes! That much it is clear. I asked the staff to take care of the infestation, but nothing was done so far.
My advice for newcomers - try not to touch anything, skip the shower if you can, don't use the bathrooms, don't bring any valuables with you, try to avoid the locker room, and swim fast to get enough exercise in 2 hours. - GreenTara R.Oakland, CA149131Dec 9, 2017
Great pool. Nice staff. Would love longer/more lap swim hours. But overall a great place to swim. Fair prices!

No pool can beat the public/open swim rate of $3 for adults and free for children under 5. Since completing lessons elsewhere, my son and I have been scouring pools to continue practice on our own. I wish the open swim hours were not restricted to about a handful of hours per week. Once the school year starts, the open swim hours will be reduced further to Saturdays-only to give priority to ECCL students during the weekday. The outdoor pool is sanitized with chlorine. The pool was pretty warm during the weekday open swim hours 2-4PM as the sun is shining directly above during the summer. But there are tall trees on one side and the building face on the other, which casts a shadow in the late afternoon. The rectangular pool has a super deep end with diving boards and lap swim. The shallow end starts at 3.5ft deep and stays that way for a while. There are many lifeguards. Life jackets are provided for little kids. During the summer there is BBQ and decent food. The locker rooms are spacious but is super drenched.

We live very close to the ECCL and its pool. The entire ECCL is a real community asset and kudos to the school district and the City of Emeryville for ensuring public access. The pool is a hidden gem within ECCL. It's a beautiful, clean, outdoor pool that usually heated to a comfortable temperature. It's so lovely that I debated whether to write this review because I want it to remain a neighborhood secret. BUT I had to give the excellent swimming teachers and lifeguards the kudos they deserve. I believe all the instructors are current or former ECCL students who have gone through instructor and lifeguard training at ECCL. My 8-year old daughter and I (middle-aged mom) have both taken private lessons this summer with different ECCL instructors and they have all been knowledgeable and professional. My daughter and I have seen our swimming improve and we've enjoyed our lessons. The lessons are very reasonably priced. I wish we could keep taking lessons throughout the year but I think the pool hours are reduced during the school year so ECCL students can learn and train at the pool which makes sense. Thanks ECCL pool staff!
