I've been a member of Equinox San Mateo since the beginning of this year and have to say that its incredibly convenient since my work office is right across the street.

Equinox offered 3 complimentary personal training sessions as well as a very good package of discounts on clothing, and other classes. I previously only went to 24 Hour fitness and after going to Equinox, I'm always pleasantly surprised to find all the amenities I could want (shower, conditioner, etc.) in steady supply and the restrooms/locker rooms are always incredibly clean.

For someone who works mostly from home, the gym is my second home and I'm glad to attend Equinox!

They also have a smoothie bar on-site, as well as Wi-Fi and tables for those who need to join a quick meeting or hop on a quick call.

I highly recommend Equinox for young professionals and those who want a clean gym while also the ability to sit down and crank out work if needed.

      Thanks Equinox staff!

I just recently rejoined Equinox since moving back to the area and I've missed the whole mind, body, and soul EXPERIENCE! I LOVE the variety of classes to fit my busy lifestyle and the cleanliness . Thank you Cody, for listening to all my needs to get the most of my membership. Equinox is a whole vibe and experience.

This is the worst equinox I've been to throughout the US. 1) parking is two hours and requires stamps. Is this 1990? Also what if I want to work out more than two hours? 2) parking fee is cash only. lol what? Who the f carries cash? 3) locker room is ghetto, dirty, and you need your own locks. 4) gym is small, equipment is standard equinox (ie generally worse than 24 hour fitness and definitely worse than boutique gyms, like powerlifting etc), stationery bikes are old and some of them don't have working screens. 5) who in their right mind would pay 300/month for this BS?

I like this fitness Center. It's not very large, but I have all I need. Nice trainers. Clean gym and shower room. Good service, there are a lot towels. I can park my car free when I come. Pool is outside and not big, but if you need swimming it is enough.

I'm not understanding the hate from all the 1-star reviews. It's an OK gym, seldom crowded, and infinitely better than 24-Hour Fitness or other chains.

At the same time, I do understand the disappointment. The dues are well over $300/mo, and, granted, if they were for only this gym, I would not be a member. As it is, I got the access pass that also lets me go to the much better Equinox locations in San Francisco and Palo Alto.

Otherwise, yes, the San Mateo branch itself is clearly far below the luxury Equinox standard. The locker rooms seem like a legacy from the previous owner, as the layout is very cramped, the lockers themselves are tiny, and you need to bring your own padlock. A number of the showers seem to have a perpetual sewer-gas smell--maybe it's time to pour some bleach down the drains?? Towels are continually running out, so it's a good idea to check beforehand and run out to the desk to ask for towels while you've still got clothes on. The room used for spin class has no perceptible ventilation, and they don't even prop open the door, so by the end of a 45-minute class it can resemble what I imagine cycling in the Amazon Jungle at high noon would feel like. The gym floor itself has all the standard equipment, and although it's tiny by Equinox standards, I've never had to wait for a treadmill or a bike.

I am really grateful that I upgraded my membership to All Access for only an extra $50 per month.

This Equinox was only 2 miles from where I worked today. The facility was amazing, and nice like how you would expect an Equinox.

      However the few cons are:

      1. Parking. During peak hours you have to pay for parking
      2. Parking again. It's such a pain to find parking in this area.
      3. They don't have locks that's already attached to the lockers, so you have to bring you own, borrow one, or put things in your car.

I had a guest pass today trying to access the gym and join a class with my 15 year old, we were stopped at the concierge because they said 15 year olds are not permitted to use any equipment in the facility due to policy. The staff along with the manager assured me that there was nothing they could do because it is policy. I then reviewed the policy online and it appears to allow 15 year olds use equipments as a guest while parent guardian is present.

The fact that is disputed is the age requirements of the use of gym equipments. I have repeated asked the staff for a copy of their version of the policy, so I can acknowledge it and leave. the manager however, said they don't have the policy at hand and that I would have to email the General Manager for clarification. I did so and didn't get a response within the hour. I didn't expect to it was after business hours. The staff also stressed that a new policy has been implemented that 15 year olds are no longer allowed to use any equipments. Ultimately, someone in the front desk found a physical copy of the policy and it clearly states that children UNDER 15 year old will not be allowed to use the facility. Being 15, this does not fall into the category of UNDER 15.

The staff has done ZERO due diligence in addressing the questions and concerns of guests. That's fine but it's not when they are incorrect and are uninformed. Every single one of the staff I've encountered has told me that 15 year olds are not allowed, contrary to what the policy said after I attempted to show them that they are incorrect, I am dismissed because I have "false information" and they "didn't know where I got my information from". They then acknowledged they were wrong after 30 minutes of back and forth and "confirming" that 15 year olds are allowed.

I highly recommend reading all policies prior to committing anything to this equinox for your best interest before you go and let the front desk people to spoon feed you bullshit despite plea to reconfirm.

This Gym is extremely unprofessional. Maybe management should retain an attorney or ten to amend the policy if they're that stressed about 15 year olds being in the gym, and maybe explain to the staff what the difference is between "UNDER 15", and "15 AND UNDER".

      Policy regarding age.

First and foremost, this location barely lives up to the Equinox "brand". The workout area is a postage stamp with low ceilings, and to add insult to injury, is underground with no windows; it was like working out in basement. For the outrageous price they charge, I'd imagine they'd provide a better experience than that.

Furthermore, the sales staff is incredibly pushy to the point of discomfort. My partner incessantly received texts on Sundays at 7pm pestering them to buy a membership.

If you can, I suggest looking elsewhere in San Mateo.

      Updated review

As an update, things have gotten a lot worse at this club. Not only are there are regularly issues with cleanliness, maintenance, and a complete lack of hot water for the showers, but more more seriously, I have been sexually harassed in the locker room several times by one staff member, including the person opening my shower curtain while I am showering, staring at me when I am exiting the shower, and following me around the locker room. Management has not resolved this situation or taken it seriously, the person continues to work at the club, including in the locker room.

This is a very disappointing experience for me. My husband and I have been a member for about two years. First, the customer service is very rude and second they sign people up under different names to hit their quota. Their shady way of doing business and handling business is very dissatisfying
