Overdue review as I moved to Boston in May and miss Fitness SF so much. I was a member for 4 years and feel strongly that Fitness SF is the best of the best - I travel frequently and have tried many gyms in many major cities, and none of them compare to Fitness SF. The value you get for the reasonable membership cost is tremendous.
The equipment is world class and the gym is constantly listening to its members for feedback on how to improve. In my time as a member, the club added a second room of squat racks and deadlift platforms, additional cable machines, a cold plunge, a hack squat machine, and a hip thrust machine, among countless other improvements.
Shoutout to Kevin for signing me up and caring about his members, Steven for always being a delight to see at the front desk, and Collin and Zach for being awesome personal trainers. Collin and Zach helped me build confidence in the weight room, learn proper form, and prove to myself that I'm stronger than I think.
I truly don't understand why any San Francisco would want to go to any other gym. If you live there, just do it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 17, 2024
There is no denying that this gym is not as nice and fancy as Equinox or Bay Club, but for the price you pay, the value you get here is one of the best bargains you will find in SF. There is a wide assortment of equipment and spaces to accommodate whatever your style of working out might look like. If you like to swim, the pool here is great and seems to be a popular draw. Most gyms at this price point don't have a pool and even if they did, I would never dare swim at a Crunch or 24 Hour (ew gross). What impresses me most about this gym is that management is always looking for ways to improve the gym and our overall experience. This is not one of those gyms that tries really hard to get you to sign up and then stops caring after that. In just the past few months, they've removed some of the offices and converted them to additional workout space, added a couple of extra leg machines that were always in high demand, added to two new cable towers in one of the rooms, replaced the old cable structure in the main room with a new one that now allows more people to workout at the same time, added additional benches in the locker room, and added Normatec compression boots. There are always new improvements on the way!
Recovery is an important but often overlooked part of your fitness regimen. What helps make this place unique is that they offer massage chairs, Hyperice massage guns, and Normatec compression boots that you can use as much as you need. This allows me to push myself in the gym while also making sure I can recovery in time for my next workout. One other thing I really appreciate about this gym is that they really try to stay open as much as possible around holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year etc. Many gyms will completely shut down for several days a time, but FitnessSF will try to stay open as much as possible, even if it is only for a couple limited of hours.
This specific location doesn't seem to have any many classes as their competitors or even other FitnessSF locations , but I also enjoy working out on my own so this doesn't bother me very much. But if you do classes only, keep this in mind. Like most gyms, it can be very busy at times and your experience will vary depending on your schedule. I suggest doing a tour during the time you are likely to workout to get a feel for it. Once you get into a routine, you will eventually find ways to tweak your schedule to avoid peak hours. A "SF membership" gets you access to all of the FitnessSF locations. My schedule is pretty hectic, so having multiple options, one near my house and one near my office, gives me lots of helpful flexibility that allows me squeeze in my workout whenever I can. They have free parking, in case you don't live close enough to walk this location. I didn't take a ton of photos of the gym space because I wanted to respect people's privacy but there are plenty of photos online. You can easily stop in for a quick tour if you want to see it for yourself.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Your feedback about our continuous improvements and commitment to member experience is much appreciated. We really do re-invest a ton back into the gyms, which most of our competitors do not do. We're particularly glad you’re making use of our recovery tools. We understand the importance of classes and will keep working to expand our offerings. We're glad our multiple locations and free parking offer you the flexibility you need. Thank you for being a part of the FITNESS SF community!

Fitness SF
First things first: price!
It is $119 a month (though I got a discount of $95/m).
Honestly, just ask nicely, see what specials they have, and there is a good chance you can get this rate too. No initiation fee or cancellation fee. This includes access to all 8 gyms w towel service.
Ok gym location breakdown:
Filmore district:
This one was by far my favorite!
Huge gym, free parking, hydromassage chairs, men's and women's saunas, lap pool, and co-ed hot tub.
They make you shower before using the sauna and hot tub, and employees do enforce these rules, which I liked (I'm not a rule nazi, but when people go into the sauna, post-workout, without showering, the stench tends to fill the room).
And for those of you reading this thinking you don't smell after you workout; think of this as ur big sis giving you lovingly advice:
You do.
Parking is free for about 3hrs on the weekdays, and about 2hrs on the weekends. If u spend more time, you'll pay the difference (usually about $3).
-You'll find the parking garage hidden on "Eddie Street".
Embarcado:
This is one of the smaller FSF and the layout is odd. In order to reach the third floor you need to exit the building, climb up some stairs and then re-enter.
But the views are unbeatable. Right in the middle of the city.
And for my girlies looking for a "suit", this is your go-to spot. It's in the financial district where the businessmen get their workouts in.
They have the best stretching area with machines that help you work on your splits.
Avoid the shower, as there are only two temperatures: extremely hot or freezing cold. Management has said this has to do with the buildings structure, nothing they can do. This one also has validated parking, though it is more expensive if you do stay over (longer than 1.5 hrs)
Unfortunately this gym is closed on the weekends.
SF Transbay:
This is the place to bring your hardcore gym-bros if you want to impress them. It's expansive, over 2 blocks long, with top-tier equipment. 15 lifting platforms, about 75 treadmills & ellipticals, 10 boxing bags, and a layout/interior design that is just gorgeous. Showers are fancy here too, with heated towel racks and bidets in the toilet. Note: no free parking here.
SF Soma:
Big, bright gym with a doggie daycare and a women's steam room (no steam room for men). Locker rooms are nice here, with the showers being clean, though it's important to note they have old school lockers, so bring your own lock. The other SFF locations have the more up-to-date lockers. Parking: free but only ab 20 spots. If you do street parking, do be sure to pay, as I made a mistake once a received a hefty fine.
I did not get the chance to visit the Castro, Mid Market, Oakland, or Marlin Fitness SF's so I feel it wouldn't be fair to comment on them.

Hi Kate. Thank you for sharing your comprehensive review! We're glad to hear about your experiences and appreciate the time you took to break down the features of our different locations.
Pricing and Specials:
We’re glad you found a rate that works for you and appreciate your advice to fellow members about asking for specials. We strive to offer flexible pricing and no hidden fees to make our memberships as convenient as possible.
Fillmore:
It’s great to know you enjoy our extensive amenities, from the hydromassage chairs to the saunas and hot tub. Your feedback on the enforcement of hygiene rules is appreciated – we believe it’s essential for maintaining a pleasant environment for everyone.
Embarcadero:
Thank you for highlighting the unique layout and amazing views at Embarcadero. We understand the layout might be a bit unconventional, but we’re glad the location and facilities make up for it. We apologize for the shower temperature issue and are continually exploring solutions despite the building’s constraints.
Transbay:
We’re glad you find the Transbay location impressive and well-equipped for serious fitness enthusiasts. The luxurious showers and extensive facilities are some of the features we’re most proud of. While there’s no free parking or very little parking at all in the area since it's a transit hub, we hope the quality of the gym makes it worthwhile.
Soma:
It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoy the bright, spacious environment at our Soma location, along with the doggie room and women’s steam room. Thank you for the note about the older style lockers; we’re always looking to update our facilities based on member feedback.
Other Locations:
We hope you get the chance to visit our Castro, Mid Market, Oakland, and Marin locations soon. Each gym offers unique features, and we’re confident you’ll find something special at each one.
Once again, thank you for your detailed review. We strive to provide the best possible experience for all our members. - Brian C.Berkeley, CA1321Aug 27, 2024
Wow has this fitness sf space upgraded since I first started coming here, my preferred gym is SOMA due to the equipment being top notch. Now this space has expanded adding in more equipment and space (they cleared out an office space) more weights and upgraded equipment. Highly recommended coming here now, thanks fitness sf!

I just joined this gym and love it. Patrick was so helpful when I was inquiring about the gym and gave me all the information I needed about the programs at the different locations and gave me a great tour. Patrick and Dara made the sign up seamless and I have found the other staff members to be just as friendly and helpful. Jason always greets with a warm welcome at the check in desk! This club is well run and has a great vibe! I highly recommend.

Need a reservation for pool, fine. Cant make the reservation online or via phone, must be done in person. Also no lifeguard
Also shout out to Kevin who made up terms and conditions on the spot and refused to honor a written email telling me to come in today for a trial, i tried to reason but he just keep saying to pay or leave. I expected an exception to this unwritten policy, because well it's unwritten; also i called before heading in to verify. I ended up signing up at another branch which did honor the free trial, and never coming back to this branch. Kevin had zero empathy for the fact i acted in good faith based on their marketing and wasted a trip / got amped up on preworkout for nothing. I am an SF resident so no reason to turn me down, apparently the issue was there is some music festival I didn't know about which doesn't seem like it matters and either way they emailed me "come in today" so the least they can do is accept responsibility and make a concession instead Kevin decide to treat me like a criminal.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Business owner information
