This place was very close to our hotel so we strolled over for breakfast. I usually get huevos rancheros or eggs Benedict, especially traditional style.
The place is very cute and inviting with good outdoor seating and plenty of heat lamps. The server, John, that took our order was very pleasant and followed up with us. And hats off to Felipe, the server assistant that was flying around the place cleaning tables, refilling water and anything that needed to be done. SUPERSTAR.
My wife had a skillet breakfast and I had the Benedict.
Lately, I've had a streak of mediocre Benedict's but this one was spot on. The hollandaise was creamy with some tang and not over salted. And the eggs were cooked perfect-both of them. The potatoes were seasoned well and well cooked. My wife's skillet was huge. With ham, mushrooms, cheese and avocado, she couldn't come close to being able to finish it. She said it was a cornucopia of flavors. The Coffee was bold and flavorful.
This place is definitely a must!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Brian H.Chicago, IL24310Aug 22, 2024
I was really surprised by this place, especially considering all the rave reviews it has received. Unfortunately, our experience was pretty disappointing. First off, it wasn't nearly as dog-friendly as advertised. They have just a few tables set aside for people with dogs, and they're stuck out of the way. Even though the patio was empty, it was misting when we visited, and almost all the tables were out in the rain. We ended up sitting in a corner under a bunch of spider webs.
The food was just okay. I had the granola pancake, and my wife had the cinnamon roll pancake, which supposedly gets all the great reviews. However, she found it dry and not nearly as good as expected. We asked for extra butter, but our request was ignored until we were already finished with our meal.
What really got to me was the $2.25 extra charge for real maple syrup. Seriously? And the butter was served in those tiny, annoying packets that you have to fumble with to open.
When I got the $50 bill for two single pancakes, some bacon, and two drinks, I knew I wouldn't be coming back. This place did not live up to the hype at all.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 1 - Aug 13, 20241 check-in
Wow. Talk about a belly full.
Found this on Yelp for dog friendly restaurants for brunch.
Went back and forth between choices of restaurants.
What a find.
Seated quickly. Nice outdoor seating for us and the pup. Nice ambiance on two levels.
Menu was both breakfast and lunch. With many options.
Our server Sarda D. Was the bomb. Explaining the menu.
Bloody Mary came really fast and tasty.
I had the club on sourdough with seasoned waffle fries.
Had to disarticulate my jaw to eat the sandwich. See picture.
Husband had skillet. Lots of great potatoes. Jalapeños bacon red bell peppers with two eggs and cheddar biscuits.
Our young lady. (Dog) had the chicken tenders. She enjoyed them.
Reasonably priced.
Leftovers heck yes.
Going back. Yes next trip.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Aug 12, 2024
From Scratch is a great breakfast/brunch spot in Carmel! We came here around noon, and we were told that the wait was about 30 minutes. We were called way under 30 minutes, and sat in their cute courtyard.
Our server was really sweet, and very knowledgeable about the menu. My kids got the grilled cheese and black bean soup and loved it. I ordered the big sur Omelette with egg whites and their from scratch potatoes. This dish was so yummy! Their portions are huge, and honestly for the price, this is probably going to be the best value meal in Carmel. I love how you can get egg whites here at no charge!
Not sure who the young man was that delivered our food, but when he put the plate down, one of the toasts rolled off the plate. He said "sorry about that," but didn't offer to replace it. We were full without the second piece of bread, but kind of odd that he didn't do anything about it.
Regardless, this place was pretty awesome. There was a line here and for good reason!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 13, 2024
Solid brunch spot when you're visiting the area nestled in quiet shopping center.
We got the Triple D sampler and the build your own breakfast burrito. The cup of chili the sampler came with was good but not the best chili I've ever had. It also came lukewarm but they gladly warmed it up when we asked. The gravy on the biscuits was phenomenal and the cheese grits were a fun take (fried into squares). The breakfast burrito was good but again, not amazing. I would also advise to skip the sour cream addition because it made it a little too "soupy" inside. The potatoes were great! The service here is excellent; everyone is super friendly and helpful. I recommend coming here if you're looking for a hearty, American breakfast!Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 12, 20241 check-in
I got the cinnamon french toast and my friend got the huevos rancheros with veggie sausage. For some reason, a lot of restaurants don't have very good or even decent french toast; it's usually dry and burnt. The french toast here was soft and delicious! I could taste the cinnamon and it's definitely one of the better french toasts I've had. I would say it's more of a dense french toast than a soggy or light french toast, if you prefer that type of french toast. My friend enjoyed her huevos rancheros. The portions here are huge!
Our waitress was prompt and attentive. The only thing is that the inside of the restaurant smelled a little weird. I'm not sure if it's the cleaner they use, but we initially sat inside and had to ask to move outdoors because the smell was too strong for both of us.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 6, 2024
We were visiting the area and wanted breakfast. We like to watch "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives" on occasion and knew this restaurant was featured on the show.
Food and service was excellent! It was actually my Husband's favorite meal while in Carmel.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - 2483103Jul 5, 2024
I think people are eating memories when they come here. It's a diner with subpar diner food. Plus.. the portions are so huge that a ton of food is wasted. The only palatable thing I had was a pancake.
Latte - bitter and gross
Corned beef and hash- overcooked and a spice that turned my stomach.
Husbands coffee - bitter
Eggs Benedict - my husband liked it but it's definitely a 2 person dish.
Truly, save your money. Go somewhere else.
I added 1 star because the service was good.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - May 21, 2024
From Scratch is a charming restaurant in the Barnyard Shopping Village in Carmel. Ownership has changed hands since the 1970's, though they've remained a local favorite for years and years.
Their claim to fame is being featured on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives in 2015. It was an episode that included Robert Irvine alongside Guy Fieri. In the world of DDD establishments, this one left a little to be desired on the food side of things. However, it was still a nice experience!
In my eyes, they're doing three things right here:
1) Massive portions. Talk about feeding an army. I guarantee most people can't finish their meals at a place like this. No one goes home hungry and they'll have to wheelbarrow you out of the restaurant!
2) They have plenty of seating, including a wonderful courtyard with lots of tables. They're even pet-friendly. On a nice morning, I can see everyone wanting to snag a table outside.
3) Service was extremely friendly and prompt. Servers checked in with us, refilled coffees, and asked how our meals were. I love shouting out great service, and they definitely deserved it here.
THE ORDER: From Scratch Breakfast Roll, aka a breakfast burrito. Smothered in house made mole and tomatillo sauce, loaded with eggs, stuffed with toppings of my choosing, and served with potatoes. Did it look promising? Oh yes. Unfortunately the entire dish was incredibly underseasoned. I was really expecting more oomph from the sauces, but to be honest I didn't get much flavor from either. My wife pretty much said the same about her breakfast skillet.
I've been to plenty of DDD endorsed joints over the years, and though an adorable little spot in Carmel, we weren't too impressed with the food. I contemplated between a 3 or 4 star for this review, because the service was really great and the bang for your buck is appreciated. But if you're in town for a limited amount of time, I wouldn't put this place to your must-do restaurants. No shade, but I'd recommend waiting in line at the bakery a few hundred feet away instead.Helpful 15Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 3 - Mari C.Mountain View, CA34362172Aug 1, 2024Updated review
This restaurant has gone downhill, sadly. The service is still good though.
-Their pancakes are still fluffy but smaller portion.
-They serve fake maple syrup and want to upcharge just for a little bit. (have considered bringing my own bottle tbh)
-Their skillets have a pool of oil and gets covered all over of it.
-Their cheddar biscuit has significantly reduced in size and are very dry.
-They never add the correct milk to my hot chocolate or mocha.
-They used frozen morningstar sausages rather than fresh ones.
I miss the old From Scratch :(

They're huge, fluffy and taste so good. As of right now, their special pancakes are red velvet which have a cream cheese frosting. When these aren't in season, my go-to are the Cinnamon Roll pancakes which are just sweet enough on their own so don't add any more syrup. I also love all their skillets because the portions are very filling and I even have to get a to-go box. The servers are always so kind and attentive.
11/10 recommend this place for its food, portions, and service!May 25, 2021Previous reviewMy friends always hyped up this place so I had to finally come and try it. I ordered their popular cinnamon roll pancakes which came with a side of fruit. I got it to-go and I was trying to put them on a plate from the box and they totally fell apart. They were so yummy and fluffy though. Definitely tasted like made from scratch. I also got their Monterey omelette with side potatoes and sourdough bread which were amazing. Definitely coming back here soon!
