I've been dying to try Fuji Sacramento, which open recently with the blessing of the original owner and apparently with a few of their recipes. For many years, Fuji was my go-to restaurant for classic Japanese food such as sukiyaki and fresh, impeccable sushi. It closed long ago, I think perhaps because of competition from new, flashier places that were not necessarily its peer. It was "old-school" in the best sense - comfortable, unobtrusive atmosphere, good service, and fresh, beautifully prepared food. I surmise that these qualities didn't compete with noisier places that offered more "fun," unusual rolls. It was a loss! So knowing that this Fuji is the heir of the previous one, I've been excited to try it.

I will definitely come back. I'm giving it four stars today, but the food rates five: I had one piece of nigiri sushi, the hamachi, which is always my "test case" for a sushi restaurant. It was perfectly sliced, generous but not excessive, thin enough to show off the fish's tenderness and freshness. My friend and I shared the furikake truffle Brussels sprouts, roasted crisp and brown but not overcooked. And the luxurious truffle infusion was apparent. (This is purely a matter of personal taste, but perhaps slightly less brown would allow the truffle flavor to emerge even more - still, it's a gorgeous dish.) My friend enjoyed the sukiyaki. I opted for the steak batayaki, which is billed as rare. It's not rare, but it's perfectly cooked and tender, and is a lovely little pile of super-thinly-sliced ribeye complemented by ginger and soy flavors and some caramelized onion, garlic, and tiny mushrooms. This was also my dinner the next day. It's not an enormous portion, but it's a very concentrated protein. I liked the "Japanese cheesecake." This is more like a light, air, white cake, so the cheese may just be an ingredient that makes it moist. I might opt for the chocolate decadence next time, but it was well-made and well-flavored.

So why only four stars, when I'm already plotting my next trip back? First, the acoustics. I recognize that many restaurants equate excessive noise with being a happening scene, but for folks who want to have a lovely visit along with their lovely food, this is an impediment. This was especially so for us, since my companion wears hearing aids, but I have excellent hearing and still felt the noise as an intrusion. So I'll come back when the outdoor terrace is open. The acoustics particularly seemed to magnify the noise from the table next to us, occupied by people who were having a hilariously enjoyable time. I don't begrudge their version of a good time, but I think that with better acoustics we could each have had our independent experiences. The other downer was that our particular server seemed not to be very interested in us. For example, after my sushi was delivered, I had to flag down a different server to ask for soy sauce, yet the tables around us had the full complement of condiments.

However, the evening ended on a lovely and caring note. Because of street construction, we had parked across the street in the Target lot. A very engaging member of the staff flagged us down on our way out, asked where we were parked, and escorted us across the street to our car. This is a memorable touch and clearly came out of a caring approach to customers. Though we could easily have walked across the street ourselves, we felt connected and touched.

So overall, good work Fuji. I hope you take both the praise and the critique seriously and I look forward to giving you a five star review in the future.

Really love this place. Came for a birthday and they had ample seating. Gorgeous inside with a bar section and sit down tables.

The whole table got almost everything on the menu and honestly we were all soo happy with the food. My favorite was garlic noodles, rainbow roll, and Brussel sprouts! Like honestly everyone had a 9/10 time. Also their happy hour menu is fucking amazing! I can't believe how cheap the drinks are! Moscow Mule $6! A ton of drink options and food options on the happy hour menu that are beyond worth it.

Went during the week for the chefs tasting menu. Not sure how often the dishes change, but it's a semi pre-fixed menu. You get your choice of the listed appetizers, 2 entrees and chefs choice dessert - which for the price is a freakin deal.

Fish was perfectly prepared, both raw and cooked. The salmon was flaky and moist, which is not always what you get at restaurants.

Fun cocktails, and our server was very attentive to our dietary restrictions at the table. Would recommend!

Lunch date with my honey and we chose to try a new spot, Fuji Sacramento. I found Fuji while scrolling on IG and the newly renovated interior with its sleek, modern, clean, contemporary style is what drew me to come in. They are specifically open daily for lunch (&brunch on the weekends) from 11:00am-3:00pm. For lunch I opted to try the Lunch Combination Bento Plate, which came with Kalbi Beef, Seasame Chicken, 1 brown of rice and a bowl of yummy miso soup, 2 pieces of crispy gyoza and 2 pieces of California roll...all for only $15! Such a great deal! Everything was delicious, from the perfectly seasoned miso soup, cripsy n' crunchy deadname chicken, and my favorite the Kalbi beef (deboned). I would absolutely eat her again because they have many "street food" items I want to try.

Service was okay, there was a slight wait when we walked in. No one was at the front to greet us, there wasn't a sign to wait for a host so that was confusing.

Fuji was one of the Japanese restaurants I use to go to back in the day when there weren't very many Japanese restaurants located in Sacramento. There were only a handful. Then Fuji closed. Now there's plenty of Japanese restaurants in the area and I would probably try going to one of the other one, other than the newly opened Fuji.

This was very disappointing. We ordered a variety of dishes. They all sounded very good on the menu. We ordered the ribs, and they were dry. The Agedashi tofu was very salty. I couldn't finish it. Too salty. The cooked miso salmon was overcooked, and the sauce was not good. It wasn't edible. The sashimi was ok, but you can taste it wasn't as fresh as it should be. We were very disappointed and not satisfied. We paid for an expensive dinner we did not like at all.

The upside is our server was very nice and the decor of the place was nice. The atmosphere of the restaurant was good. Parking is street parking or across the street where the market is.

      Updated review

Came here for lunch today, my partner ordered a plate of eggs, spam, and fried rice off the brunch menu and she really enjoyed it. I got the 3 way sake nigiri again which is always good. I tried the bon bons which I recommend getting as an appetizer to share with others it was very flavorful. The service was fast and friendly. It wasn't too busy on a Sunday around 12/1.

This place looks unassuming from the outside, but the inside is very updated and clean. We went to eat a late lunch here on a Saturday at 3 pm and no one was there. Service was quick and our server was friendly & knowledgeable about the menu. In regards to rolls the menu is limited, but the quality of the fish makes up for it!

I had a very pleasant dinning experience at Fuji. We ordered the Agedashi tofu, macadamia shrimp, and tempura for appetizers. Every dish was delicious. For our entrees, we ordered 2 rolls and garlic noodles. The dragon roll and the other roll (I cannot recall the name) were great as well. The seafood tasted fresh. I also enjoyed the garlic noodles. I will surely make return visits to this establishment.

I remember the original Fuji's I really loved their sesame chicken, Unfortunately this place is not the old Fujis. Service was good our waiter was attentive and took our order correctly. Lay out was similar to the previous Fujis and very clean. The food was not like the old Fuji I was hoping for. The menu is set up ala cart. No bento boxes. Rice and miso separate. Which is fine. But my concern was the tempera, dragon roll and chicken teriyaki . See pictures. Tempera: Over fried, oily, different batter. Dragon roll : sushi rice mushy. Chicken teriyaki: sauce very salty. And the ala rice was hard and room temperature. This place just opened a few months now. I may try again but just wanted to let you all know of my experience.

I ordered to go on a Friday, so review is solely on the food.

I was looking for fish and chips and was surprised to see Fuji's pop up, so I ordered online. I tried calling, but no one answered.

It took about 20 minutes after I put in the order online before I got a text stating my order was ready. This place is located next to the target on Riverside. Parking is in the neighborhood next to it or across the street as others have stated.

The food was good. I thought it was pricey at $21, but you do get a great amount of food. Enough for 2 meals. I got 3 large pieces of fish that was battered in what was similar to what butterfly shrimp are battered in. It isn't your typical wet batter if that is what you are looking for. The fries or "chips" are well seasoned as well. Since I ordered to go, it did get soggy in the to go container and wasn't as crispy as I would like. But still tasted great.

I would order again and do want to try eating in restaurant. Well update if I get the chance.

I recently dined at Fuji in Sacramento and found the experience to be somewhat disappointing.

The fish lacked the freshness one expects from a sushi restaurant, which was quite disheartening. We also ordered the sukiyaki, but it seemed like a basic mix of ingredients with a watered-down dashi, not offering the rich, comforting flavors typically associated with this dish.

The service was also underwhelming. The servers appeared inattentive and not particularly helpful, which impacted the overall dining experience.

While Fuji has potential, it currently falls short in both food quality and service. With some improvements, it could become a much better dining option.
