Crust is super light and crispy. The Salsiccia has got a little kick to it because of the jalapeños which is nice with the meaty sausage chunks on it. The Red Gypsy was well balanced with the chunks of ricotta and salty olives. Like creamy and salty sort of on top of a beautiful crust. Red Gypsy isn't on the menu it seems, but it was in the glass case when I went so base your selection on what's available that day.
Inside, there's about a 3 x 3 area to stand, look at the pizza selection, and order. It's very small, but there's so many pizzas in the back. You can get your slices hot or cold. You pick up the pizza in the little window connected to the sidewalk. There isn't really any seating there.
Service is fast and friendly, not many words were exchanged. Parking is just street. Overall, I enjoyed my pizza and am excited to try the other flavors.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 30, 20241 check-in
I was craving pizza a few days ago and remembered this spot after searching no for it on Yelp. I used to pick up from here every now and then when I did DoorDash and the cannolis looked good. As busy as they were, I told myself I would go back someday. So here we are about a year and some change later.
I came in on Sunday after getting a manicure in Berkeley. It was between this place and Spinning Dough in West Oakland. When I arrived they were close to closing. All that was left was a few slices of pizza so I got the Julian and another slice but I can't remember the name. The Julian has lacinato kale, house made Sicilian sausage, red onion, chili flakes, garlic, mozzarella and pecorino. It was alright. I now know I'm not too big of a fan of kale in pizza. The sausage was actually pretty good but it made the pizza too meaty for me. This is all a review based on personal preference.
The cannoli was alright. I haven't had enough cannolis to make an expert foodie judgment, but I have had better.
They have a host of pizzas on the menu that were to my liking. Next time maybe I'll just order a whole pie. The Acciughe seems very appetizing and I don't know where else I would be able to find a pie like this.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - N B.San Francisco, CA282Sep 14, 2024
This pizza is terrible. The crust is bad, the sauce is sweet and tastes canned, and the topping are just thrown on top. The cheese is melted already, so the toppings sit on top. All in all, bad ingredients, poor craftsmanship, and not cooked right. Bad tasting crust was burnt black.
Understanding that good pizza requires effort, time, and care, I can't fault them too much, considering the college demographic. Nonetheless, the pizza is so bad that it wouldn't be good sober, drunk, or hungover. Thus, it serves zero purpose. Sorry to have to write this.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 22, 2024
Very nice neighborhood with a friendly welcoming vibe.
Gioia is a very small shop. They sell pizza by the slice. There's no in-door dining. On the sidewalk is a small bench under tree-covered comfortable shade.
I ordered a slice of Julian -- chosen because it was one of two options that had sausage. The pizza was absolutely delicious and super flavorful. I shall return to try other flavors.
Tip: add take-out clam chowder to your meal from Monterey Fish Market next door. They are delicious.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 58288914444Feb 20, 2024
FAVE PIZZA SPOT in Berkeley. I've tried the pepperoni, julian, and funghi. You can't go wrong with any of the options here. Crispy, hot, and fresh.
There is some limited outdoor seating, but this is mainly a takeout kinda spot. I always just stand outside and gobble down my slice.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 13, 2023Updated review
The best take out NY STYLE pizza in east bay! We order the fromaggio pizza 3x a month from here! Nice Thin Crispy crust
Even warmed up at 450° for 5 min. Tasty crust. I guess I would like a bit more consistency in the sauce to cheese ratio. The right amount of tomato sauce makes it perfect! Otherwise it's good but lacking a bit of flavor.
The PEPPERONI, fungi and spinach pizza are also good. We just prefer it with cheese!
Their chopped salad is excellent too!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Dec 13, 2017Previous reviewpizza still wanting for flavor (cheese and sauce ratio off)
slices are still tiny half the size for the same $3 as a few years ago.
not impressed by the cleanliness.Jan 14, 2017Previous reviewHow should customer service affect ratings? Since its been a month since my 3 stoodges slipping and sliding incident and I have still not heard from the owner or manager , no apologies no how are you feeling , Nada!
So this question is unclear to me!
I have been asked as I hobble ,what happened ? so i mention it, they are always horrified that no one as much as offered me a free slice, no less the suggested free pizza for a year or a ridiculous forever.
Little star will own up to a wrong topping on a to go order ,apologize and give an unexpected over the top $6O gift card.
give 0 stars , for customer service. (See below)
4 on the pizza but going down , so I am conflicted as to what rate this place .
Years ago it was a 5 star place,ITS GOING DOWN !
The Pizza has mini sauce and good cheese, but inconsistant and nice crust. The slices and the toppings are becoming more scarce and the slices much smaller. I remember the slices being double the size a few years ago. It would seem The difference being when you buy a slice they might be cutting the pie into 8 slices verses 6 in the past. Who knows. A whole pie is probably more worth it.
SAFETY issue in this shop, if it is raining. Watch out!!!!!
The tile floor in the entrance Is like an ice skating rink, extemely slippery when wet. I did not know it was wet ,I took one step And I almost did a split, ouch! I tried to grab onto something, everyone in the shop just looked at me , including the employees .
No one offered any assistance or help, not even a chair or an are you okay?
I held onto the counter ,the service girl asked me what I would like.
I said the name of the owner and the phone # , neither of which were forth coming. I left my phone # .
I still ordered some very skimpy pizza slices and carefully left.
2 days later I heard from the manager, she asked how I was doing ,I told her and that was it. I Never heard from them again. You be the judge!Jan 11, 2017Previous reviewI give 3 stars , all about the customer service. (See below)
4 on the pizza , so I am conflicted as to what rate this place .
Years ago it was a 5 star place.
The Pizza still has a tasty sauce and good cheese, maybe a little less than usual , nice crisp crust. However, The slices and the toppings seem to be shrinking , I remember the slices being double the size in 2009. The difference being when you buy a slice they might be cutting it into 8 slices now verses 6 in the past. Who knows. A whole pie is probably more worth it.
Also, A heads up on safety in this shop, if it is raining. The tile floor in the entrance Is extemely slippery when wet and the help does not keep the one mat infront of the door. (At least they didn't before today)! I took one step into the shop last week, amidst the pouring rain. When I entered , My foot slipped the second I hit the tile and I almost did a split, I tried to grab onto something, there was nothing but the rounded glass case. I don't know how I managed to not fall...everyone in the shop just looked at me , including the help. No one offered anything, not help, not even a chair or an are you okay?
I held onto the counter trying to collect myself , I knew I would be hurting , the service girl asked me what I would like. I said the name of the owner and the phone # , neither of which were forth coming. I left my phone # .
I still ordered some very skimpy pizza slices and carefully left.
2 days later I heard from the manager, she asked how I was doing ,I told her the truth, everything was hurting, that was it. I Never heard from them again. You be the judge! - Louis C.Pleasanton, CA01Sep 16, 2024

The Gioia , becoming worse every day , I'm 12 years familiar with this place and this is degraded in my eyes, once employee was shook/dumped rubber under oven carpet near the table with my pizza , I made a verbal comment but hold off writing review, but today I upset about employee again , because when I approached cashier , I asked if I can order , but music was very loud , she probably misunderstood or said automatic " there is only slices left " but than next person was told different information about whole pie ... than I started insisting on ordering whole pie and employee started lecturing me and telling me that I didn't explained .
They also rude and not friendly as used to be long time ago...Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
