What a gem to have in the neighbourhood. Great food, very nice service, and gives you the warmth and satisfaction of a great home cooked meal.

Used to have great side dish. And now, they switched to kale salad and bad quality rice. Everything gone down with cheap quality food. The only thing didn't change is the name. Better to change the name, so that we don't have high expectations. So disappointed.

This restaurant was sold recently and is under new management. Unfortunately their signature Teishoku dishes are no longer as authentic as before. Yes we need our greens but serving kale salad with this seems just not right. Before they had tamago, pickles and perhaps burdock.

Overall the meal is ok for the price.

Hachibei is as good as it get to an authentic homestyle Japanese meal. These comfort food are super tasty and we always love their plating arrangement. Not to mention their bright side dishes and pickles.

In addition to their must-try chargrilled black cod (pre-order is recommended) meal set, their fried oyster set was also very tasty and filling. Plump and not overcooked, rich and crispy. We also tried their saba oshi sushi and a natto with tuna sashimi appetizer. The natto was especially yummy. The softness of the fish paired well with the creamy/sticky texture of the fermented soybeans, while the cooling temperature mellowed out the usually strong smell from the beans.

This place is one of our staples. Affordable good quality cooking.

I used to come to this restaurant all the time and it was one of my favourites. Sad to say the food and service are not as good as they used to be. Quite disappointed so I don't think I'd go back.

Very delicious Japanese dishes in Ma&Pa style. Valuable price, great selection of cooked items. If you are looking to try home style Japanese food, this is your spot!

This place has a variety of bento boxes that include daily robata grill fish, pork cutlet, teriyaki & other robata grill fishes. Plus a small selection of sushi rolls, their negitoro roll is always my fav, melts in my mouth!! My dad loves their chopped scallop handcone that filled all the way to the end of the cone! Personally I love their bento box set, a main course with a few different side dishes. If a bento box is too much for you, there are other appetizers like tempuras, spinach gomae & edamame.

Staff here are always helpful and polite, and keep the place tidy and clean. This place has a full liquor license so you can enjoy a sake and an Asahi at the same time! Just remember to drink responsibly

This spot is a local hidden gem so be prepared to lineup if you come here around dinner times. Reservation highly recommended. Or you can drop your name down and walk around the quiet neighborhood.

At the time of writing this review, I ordered take out during the 2020 pandemic and I have to say, the food is still amazingly delicious when I ate at home, and this is the first restaurant I ordered after we have cooked at home for 6 weeks EVERYDAY!! So you know how dear this restaurant is to me!

This is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Vancouver for many reasons: the service is very friendly, the food quality is superb and is unique in that it is homestyle, like what Japanese would eat at home, the cozy atmosphere (spacing is a bit tight, but the friendliness makes up for it), and the ample free parking around the area is a big plus.

Their Teishoku is the highlight: set meals that includes a main dish, rice, miso soup, and various side dishes. I preordered the black cod teishoku a few days in advance because this main is the most popular and sells out frequently. When we arrived, we were quickly seated at our reserved table and were offered tea or water. The hot tea was super nice on a rainy night. Our food arrived neatly on a tray with each dish in its own dish or bowl. The portion for black cod was huge, much larger than other restaurants. The flavour was very good, but I always find it a bit salty and less moist than other places, but the portion is incredible and it goes great with the rice provided. For the side dishes, there was agedashi tofu, some pickled veges, and tamago, gomae, and some stringy-bean appetizer. If you want extra rice, just ask and it's at no extra charge. I was so full after finishing everything; a truly great value.

Other than the black cod, I would also recommend the simmered mackerel. The flavour is really good, especially the sauce that goes great with the rice.

Our new favorite Japanese restaurant! Their teishoku sets remind us of our travels in Japan .

We have tried four of their teishoku sets: mackerel, tofu hamburger, tempura, and tonkatsu. The simmered mackerel and tofu hamburger teishoku are our favorites of the four. The mackerel came with soup, rice, pickles, agedashi tofu, spinach and steamed egg. The tofu hamburger came with green salad, potato salad, soup, rice, and pickles. Delicious and great value!

It can get pretty busy and there is sometimes a wait, as it is a fairly small restaurant. We try to go as early as possible to avoid the crowd.

Vancouver has a lot of Japanese restaurants specializing in ramen, or sushi, or tonkatsu, or hotpot, etc. etc., but Hachibei feels like Japan's equivalent of a neighbourhood restaurant; when I visit them I feel I'm really there. The servers are Japanese, the food's excellent and truly authentic (with frequent unusual specials!) ... I especially like the many teishoku (set menus, a main served with rice and miso soup) which are quite reasonably priced.
