Sitting down for sushi at Hakone is akin to the feeling of coming home.
Great quality food, great prices, even better care and service by a family-owned small business. A must-visit in Coquitlam!

This is a Korean owned/operated Japanese restaurant. It is located inside of the Kensington Plaza. No restaurant sign visible on the street. Two of us ordered Miso Ramen, House Rolls and Shrimp Tempura. The tempura is excellent, very light and crunchy. Prices are very reasonable.

I was surprised on the Star review. I came here with a friend to grab dinner to go. I ordered the combo B which came with 6 pieces of nigiri sushi, a California roll and miso soup for $9.99 . The owner or serve was super friendly. I had 2 of my nigiri substituted for salmon instead. There were no extra charge for it.

I found the sushi not very fresh. Flavor was not wow. Price is definitely on the cheap end. (Food 2 stars and service 4). The restaurant is somewhat difficult to find because it is hidden inside the mall. Parking is difficult to find around the area. We ended up parking at Coquitlam Center and walking over.

This is a Korean Japanese restaurant. So there are a few Korean items on the menu. Also note that this restaurant has limited number of seats and table.

Hakone sushi is located hidden inside a mall complex near Coquitlam Centre. If you didn't know where to look you wouldn't know it was there. It turns out that quite a few people DO know about Hakone sushi because it was packed when we got there.

Hakone sushi isn't a purely Japanese restaurant. They actually offer Korean dishes as well so you can have a bit of both or whatever you're craving. We decided to get the Korean chirashi don because we were curious about it. Plus, we saw a lot of people getting it so that means we had to try it right? A few minutes after we ordered our food, a mountain of rice with a drizzle of sesame oil came to our table. We were confused at first until another mountain of food came. This was the other half of the chirashi don and included salmon, tuna, snapper, spicy tuna, massago, and lots of veggies.

Once everything came, we mixed everything in the giant bowl with the rice. This was the funnest part about the whole thing because I love mixing my food together to make it look super colourful! This dish was believe it or not...$13 and it was definitely enough for 2 people!

      3.5 stars

We saw good reviews about this Japanese restaurant, so we decided to give it a try.

Korean people run this Japanese restaurant. Parking in this neighbourhood is alright. You can park in the parking lot of Coquitlam Centre and walk to the restaurant. The restaurant belongs to a complex that has commercial parking space, BUT it is very easy to miss it. If you can find the entrance of the commercial parking lot and do not miss it, you should be able to find free parking there. This Japanese restaurant is located inside the complex. Not right on The High Street.

The chef is an older Korean gentleman and two servers are older female. They were very polite to us. They took our order correctly. However, the chef was super busy taking care of the customers who ate in the restaurant and ones who ordered take out. The dishes came out very slowly.

We ordered two pieces of the salmon aburi sushi at $3.95. The rice was kind of mushy. The salmon should be seated a little bit but the quality was not there yet. The texture of the salmon meat was soft but not really seared. It definitely lost some marks here. I ordered one piece of ikura nigiri sushi. The ikura was sitting and touching the aburi salmon sushi. The sauce of the aburi salmon sushi laid on the seaweed of the ikura nigiri sushi. The sauce soaked the seaweed, plus that the oil of the ikura went all the way down to the rice and plate. It should not be like that. Again the rice of the ikura nigiri sushi was mushy. The rice should be firm and sticky or chewy.

The chopped scallop roll and house roll were great. The chopped scroll roll had a bite size. The house roll was bigger that came with some sauce on top. It was interesting though. Usually each dish of sushi comes with some ginger and wasabi. This dish had none but only the sushi itself. Usually there was some decorations on the plate with the wasabi and ginger.

The seared tuna sashimi was great outside. It was crispy with some salty flavour, but the tuna sashimi itself was still frozen, so the texture of the fish was very cold and not ready for eating!

This restaurant has some good dishes and bad ones. They can still be improved on a lot of things. Probably the size of the restaurant is small. It does not have enough storage. It has a lot of things that are exposed to the public/the seating area or for customers to see. Not organized enough.

Pricing was average comparing to others. Not super expensive. It is a little bit cheaper than the ones in Burnaby and Vancouver. If you don't have high expectations or if you only look for so-so Japanese food, this restaurant works fine for you.

My first time at Hakone! We got this rice giant bowl which came with a side of veggies and sashimi with spicy sauce. Really good and great to share! And we got their hot combo rolls. Altogether came to around 30$ for 2, which is good and you take home some. Great sushi restaurant and definitely going back to try other items on the menu. It is inside Kensington mall on the bottom floor.

This is my go to place when I'm feeling healthy.

They have this big bowl filled with sashimi and vegetables mixed with sesame and hot sauce that not only taste excellent but your body will be thanking you for finally feeding it vegetables.

They have a number of other good dishes too but I'm gonna let you guys find that out for yourself.

Staff are friendly and food is fresh and good. It took me a while to post this 5 star review as I didn't want it to be popular to the point where I would have to line up. BUT... I gotta give credit when credit is due and if everyone was selfish, there would be no good deeds in this world.

      So... You're welcome!!!

Pleasant sushi experience. Every piece was a delight in my mouth. Perfect balance of all the ingredients. It's not fancy or trendy, but if you want to please your palate and your tummy, try this hidden place for great gastronomic experience. $48 for. 54-piece party tray. Not bad. Next time, I will try their big bowl of noodle.

Hakone has always been a staple for my husband and I when we want some easy soupy meal for a lazy weeknight dinner. You might find that statement odd given that this is supposedly a sushi restaurant but my husband and I actually come to Hakone for their limited Korean dishes. We're not here for their sushi rolls (they're all right on their own accord but nothing fancy to write about) but rather here for their seafood kalguksu and hoedeopbap (spicy chiraishi bowl). Their seafood kalguksu isn't the best in the region either but it's not bad for someone to make for you for around $12. The bowl is aesthetically big and the ingredients are simple - but what we like about it is that it's just 'home-y'. The spicy chiraishi bowl also rides with the theme of large bowls and comes out in a huge steel bowl for easy mixing. Your mix-ins which include all of the chopped up sashimi and vegetables will come in a separate plate.

My rating is more of a 3.5 given that there seems to be a rather decline in customer service ever since the recent owner change. The previous owner still works at the restaurant as a waitress but there's an obvious decline in care for customer service and an increase in chatter within the kitchen.
