I know how inconvenient it is to have to take your car in for body work, but Alan and Mark make the process painless. They give honest appraisals of the work that needs to be done... not the work they can make extra money on. Besides doing excellent body work, they always seem to find a scratch or dent somewhere on my car that they just repair almost on the spot. It feels like they really enjoy helping people. Their integrity is evident in the quality of their work and how they treat me as a customer.

I strongly recommend Alan at Hayes Auto. They've been around a long time and he's the best. They are fair, honest, have a nice shop, and work on all makes; primarily German & Japanese from what I've seen.

Downside is they are busy.

I've had body work done twice on my 2010 Toyota RAV4 by both Alan and Joseph. Both were non-insurance repairs. The work in both cases excellent and the repair costs very reasonable.
Appreciated that they saved me money with lower cost solutions. Will always recommend Hayes Auto Repair....

Let's face it, those of us who don't know much about cars are at the mercy of their mechanic. Over the years, Alan has worked my Subarus..everything from 60k, mystery rattle/leaks and bodywork. He will offer his honest opinion on whether something is worth fixing or just tell you it's no biggie. On a few occasions I rolled in there in a bit of a panic about something - he always stopped what he was doing and helped me out immediately, even fixed the problem right away if it was minor. Highly recommended, I trust him implicitly.

I was referred to Hayes Auto Repair by a family member who gave them high marks for their service. I had this horrendous sound coming from my engine and I was fearing the worst that something was wrong with my transmission or something else that would cost a lot of money to repair. So, I brought in my SUV on a Monday morning...Alan, the owner and the mechanic, Terry checked it out and they determined that it was an idler pulley that needed replacing. Terry even brought this stethoscope type instrument and listened to the car (these guys are serious about their stuff)!! Alan went on ahead and ordered the part (of course the place they use didn't have this part in stock). So, instead he had to order the part through another resource. I have to give him credit that he made the effort to get me the less expensive costing part vs. the more expensive part.

The situation with my SUV was serious enough that he highly recommended that I don't drive my vehicle until the part comes in the shop and I bring it in for repairs (I'd risk the fan belt breaking) and that would cost much more money for those repairs. I really appreciated this fact; and they could have had me drive my car until it broke, have it towed to their shop and then I could have paid 10 times the amount! So, I was out of a car for 3 days but very thankful that I wouldn't have been surprised and stranded with a broken fan belt god knows where.

Alan gives me an estimate of $250 or so in repair costs (I was so relieved to hear this amount). Fast-forward to Friday...I drop off my truck at 8am, I receive a call at 11:30 that my SUV is ready for pick up. Now, in my history of auto repairs (w/dealerships and the like) I wasn't expecting to pick up my vehicle until after 4pm (especially on a Friday). To have it ready before Noon was very impressive. Now, I don't know if installing an idler pulley is as easy as changing oil but I was glad to know that I'd be able to enjoy my weekend. What made this visit to this repair shop even more impressive was the actual cost; it was $150 ($100 less than I'd been quoted). That doesn't happen at all...esp. for me when it comes to repairs.

I started my vehicle and to my delight it sounded so smooth...I think it even purrs now!

As a young woman, I am always worried a little about car mechanics trying to pull the wool over my eyes, so to speak. I have a mechanic in Marin that I trust, but my car was making some serious grinding sounds that a friend said was a broken strut, and didn't seem like it would last the trek over the bridge. I called them to find out the estimate for the work, and then called Hayes Auto Repair. Mark was very nice over the phone, talked me through the problem and their hourly rate, and then made an appointment for me to bring it in. Alan was there when I brought it in, and he was very kind and said he would call with an estimate. A few hours later, he called to say it was only going to be an hour of labor! I was SO relieved, and so grateful for his honesty. Now I have a mechanic I trust in SF! Thanks guys!

I strongly recommend Alan. He is honest and trust worthy and always fair. I have been going to him for years. It is so nice to have someone you can trust working on your car and know that you are not over paying.

I spoke to Alan about a few minutes back and he was very helpful in what should be done and what should not be done with the car for a specific problem I had called for. Five stars just for an honest advise and a very friendly talk.
