I was expecting pandemonium based on the reviews but I was totally pleased with my car rental experience here. My car was being serviced by Chevy and they partner with this Hertz location for loaner cars. When I read all the negative reviews, I nearly declined getting a rental while my car was in the shop.
I arrived at around 10:30am on a Tuesday. There was no line but all the staff were working with other customers on the phone. One took the time to acknowledge me. Then when an employee was ready, I provided a confirmation number from Chevy and I was efficiently on my way to picking up my rental.
Upon returning the car, I also had a smooth experience. I rented an EV at 100% charge and wasn't able to charge it before returning it. But as long as you return an EV with at least 75% charge, there are no fees. Hertz also drove me to the Chevy dealership and the shuttle was quick. No surprise charges at all for me.
Overall, I only encountered kind people at this Hertz! My only mild critique is about the location itself: navigating through the Marriott hotel garage felt confusing when I was getting the car, but returning it was smooth thanks to the signage in the garage.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 13066914367Dec 1, 2023Updated review
I decided to try this location a second time and so glad I did! It was closer for me bc I didn't want to go all the way to the Oakland airport.
-Outstanding service with Floyd. He was super helpful, fast in booking, professional, and accommodating with my car reservation.

I made sure to call ahead after reading the negative reviews about peoples drop off experiences here after hours, rental returns missing, & issues while they were closed. The Hertz representative assured me that it's safe because they have security cams & confirmed the drop off instructions. I had no choice but to drop off at this location since I booked it on Priceline and it was either this location or Berkeley.
The return process was simple. Drive rental to 3rd floor, park in any spot, there were no return forms so I wrote on my original rental ticket: DATE & TIME OF DROP OFF, CURRENT MILEAGE, GAS LEVEL, and drop off original rental receipt with keys. I always make sure to take pictures in case there are any issues. I still prefer renting from the Oakland airport for peace of mind and returning my rental to an actual person.

This spot has its ups and downs. On the bright side, downtown Oakland's prices beat Oakland Airport, and I snagged a sweet deal on a Tesla for just $150 over five days--a steal! However, when I picked up the car, there was an unexpected 20-30 minute wait. Also, note that street parking is the only option, and Downtown Oakland's notorious for break-ins, so keep an eye out.
Navigating the pickup and drop-off is a bit tricky--Marriott garage, fourth floor--make sure to pay close attention at the counter. If you miss the instructions, you might get a little lost wandering through the Marriott Hotel searching for your rental car in the parking garage.
Dropping off lacked the usual process; I handed the keys to an agent cleaning return vehicles. However, she didn't have much to say. She took the keys, and that was it--no receipt, no mileage check--unconventional, to say the least.
Hertz customer service isn't the speediest, with long waits on the toll-free line. Yet, once through, extending my rental was a breeze. I would give zero stars if I could. Rented a car with them, showed up and was told my rental was canceled without any prior notification. So after paying for an Uber to get to my car rental, waiting in line fire 30+ minutes, I was callously told that they would not be able to support me. After reaching out to their headquarters for support, there was no additional support. Do not rent from this company or location.

Don't rent from here! Read the reviews before coming! I arrived at 8a.m for my car reserved pickup and they had no cars to rent me. Took almost two hours to clean, take pictures and actually get a car. Plus the service was giving "who cares" the entire time.

When we arrived at Oakland Airport Car Rental center, we were told our car had just come in. It would take 20 minutes to clean it. 30 minutes later it was not available and when we complained we were told that they would give us an upgrade because we had waited so long. 15 minutes after that we were given our car--the same class as what we had originally ordered--no upgrade in sight. It took an hour before we were on the road, making us late for our next appointment. When mentioning this to Hertz, we simply got a "We will do better next time."

This place is a rip off. I rented a vehicle and returned it. I even vacuumed it out really good before I returned it. I also purchased the stolen and damage voucher for $25 dollars a day Which came to a total of $175.
After I returned the vehicle and went home, I got a phone message from Hertz saying that there was a crack in the windshield, which I didn't even know happened They say they are going to charge me for the windshield. I can't even talk to anyone, the phone number has an automated system, which does not allow you to talk to a person. I am so angry that these people can just call me and say they're gonna charge my credit card without speaking to me directly. I do not recommend this place and I will not recommend it to any of my friends or family. It' shouldn't be an added bonus to receive excellent service anywhere, but it's not necessarily a Bay Area experience. I've heard this from others as well. When you spend money in NYC or LA, folks treat you like they want you to have a great experience and they want you to come back, vs getting you in and out.
I stopped coming to this Hertz decades ago because I didn't like how their staff were treated. I can't tell you for sure how they are treated now, and I can tell you we have a friendly and efficient experience picking up our car.
Shoutout to Vanessa at the front desk for her excellent service and response to my playful humor. We got everything we needed for a fun and safe trip!
And to the gal up there cleaning cars and keeping the space safe, thank you as well!
My only concern was that I couldn't extend my ride online or on the phone. That was very stressful. I brought it back a few short hours of a day late and I'm hoping I'm charged by the day and not the hour. Do not rent a car from here!!! I was booked a rental at this location through an insurance claim and nearly a month later I got hit with over $500 deducted from my account. I distinctly remember speaking to the rental agent named Veronica about additional insurance that would be an additional $26 a day which I declined yet she decided to add it to my account anyway without my knowledge. Nearly a month later $500 is subtracted from my account without any warning. I looked up information about Hertz and apparently they do this to so many people. They add bogus charges to folks accounts and even have gotten people arrested after reporting their cars stolen! Unless you got money to throw down the drain rent a car from here at your own risk! The employees at the store robotic, and they do not budge and care about the fact that they are doing harm to people

Got a rental through my insurance company after an accident. A week after turning in the car nearly $400 was missing from my account for $160 in tolls.
The car I got from them was busted. I had to wait 4 days before they got a car. The office staff was disorganized and didn't communicate well with me or with each other.
