I love to try new sushi restaurants.

I could tell that this place would be nothing but spectacular as i took my first steps in. A very clean and modern look with ample seating. Just like most sushi restaurants you get acknowledged as soon as you walk in. This was different, where everyone as they walked by smiled and welcomed us along with the chef. Just by the atmosphere I got I was already smiling and ready for an experience.

The dishes were so fresh and really caught your eye. When you hear people say that you always eat with your eyes first. Very true in this case. Each and every dish we had added another layer of texture and depth of flavor. The Negi Toro with Quail Egg was my favorite piece of sushi. The quail egg gave it a silky and salty flavor to the Negi Toro. It was a great start to the meal. A recommendation by one of the servers was to get a salmon bomb. She was not wrong. It was definitely the "bomb". Definitely a two biter, but if you can go for the one bite definitely go for it.

My first experience to this sushi place. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone. I will be back here for more.

      "All about the gains!!"

I kind of like this place.
The dining room is pretty big and the service is good.
The other good point is the parking.
The price is acceptable and the food is very good.
I didn't rate 5 stars because of the very poor choice for vegetarians.

Tako wasa was so spicy I couldn't eat it.
Sushi rolls were poorly made and I actually received the wrong one initially.
Seems like mostly a younger crowd that goes here for a quick/late bite.

Good variety on menu + Free parking + Memorable volcano roll and deep fried poached egg = what I like about Hyack!

We went on a Friday night that was loud and very busy. Luckily, service was decent with well mannered servers.

Ambiance is simple & modern. And place is good for large gatherings as they can easily group tables together, hosting party size of over 20 to 30 diners but it definitely can be loud with large groups.

Recommended dishes: deep fried poached egg was a must order and volcano roll was fun to watch. I can't really pinpoint a favorite sushi roll or sashimi item from our first visit at Hyack. I would say items brought to us in the love boat were decent and fresh and I enjoyed their cooked dish more, such as grilled squid and deep fried poached egg. And yes, I'd likely order the volcano roll again for the "burning fire presentation"...as I enjoy 3D meal experiences lolz (see video).

Free Parking is always a bonus and its location is also within 3 minutes of walking distance from New Westminster station. Thus, I recommend Hyack as a convenient sushi restaurant for meetup via either transit or driving...3.5 stars for my first visit.

      Hyaaa... so late la!

One of those late nights and options were limited so decided to try out this place for some take out while on the way home.

This place is located right beside Douglas college on 8th Street in New West. There are paid street parkings available (I see roof top parking?)

      Here were the food I ordered to go;

      1. Soft shell crab. Lack of flavour and a bit too crunchy for a soft shell crab to my liking.
      2. Tako wasabi. Pretty good, not slimy.
      3. Salmon and tuna sashimi. Decent size and fresh but could use a bit of a presentation even though it's a take out (all sushi places should STOP putting lemon slices near sashimis, they literally cook the outside of whatever fish it touches).
      4. Salmon, hamachi, chopped scallops, tamago, albacore toro nigiris. Fresh but the toros missing that buttery taste.
      5. Spider roll and futomaki. The futomaki was pretty good. The spider roll was a bit off, maybe because the softshell crab was a bit off.
      6. Deep fried poached egg. Surprisingly pretty good, I actually enjoyed it. I could snack on a couple of these.
      7. Asari garlic butter. It was pretty bland even though I do smell the garlics. And what's with so much broth? It's like a guppy fish swimming in the ocean.
      8. Beef teriyaki with rice. The rice could be softer and the beef could be less dry and slightly thicker so it wouldn't be like eating beef jerky with rice.

When I went to pick up the order, the restaurant was pretty quiet with one table of customers. A weird little sense of silence especially late at night in New West.

The service from the server who packaged my order was okay, although could be more welcoming . Maybe cause it has been a long day and it was late.

As for the food, I was hoping it to be decently okay because I was counting on it to be my late night take out place but they fell short of that... hyaaaa! Too bad for me la!

This is my goto sushi spot. Excellent service and accommodating to people with special diet needs as I've observed when going with friends.

Deep fried California roll, pork gyoza, and cream cheese roll.

      Happy hour !!

Hyack Sushi has a spacious dining room with lots of seating

They have small but tasty happy hour from 3-6pm

I got the appetizer tempura. It can with mixed veggies like zucchini, yam, and sweet bell pepper and 1 prawn.

This was $4, which is amazing and the tempura was fried perfectly

The chicken karaage is $6 was also pretty tasty

The tuna don was pretty plain but satisfying because I only wanted to tuna sashimi with steamed rice that day.

Their basic rolls (chopped scallop roll and sockeye salmon rolls) are on the smaller size so prepare to order more or specialty rolls like Reverse Red roll that are larger

The Reverse Red roll was good, but I wasn't a fan of the unagi sauce

      The food came pretty quickly

They offer a scanned QR code menu and ordering system which is a good safety measure. The online system functions include placing your order, call server over to refill water or bring the bill

They are pretty good with the safety protocol and my only complaint is that they don't spread out the diners at different table in restaurant. Since 5:30pm wasn't busy, I would recommend spreading out diners instead of lumping them all seated in 1 section

They also have Parking in the back of the restaurant

Rude Staff, I went with 4 of my friends I don't like sushi so I ate my own food. A Chinese lady came in and rudely told me not to eat outside food.
Nowhere it's written no outside food allowed even when I'm with my friends who are having sushi.
She was wearing black new balance shoes.

I'm a takeout customer. I regularly order rolls, rice bows (tofu teriyaki or karaage), and appetizers. I love the pumpkin croquettes in the appetizers. Service time meets the pick up time I chose in the ordering site. The place is clean based on observations at the front.

Made a quick stop sushi stop over the weekend at New West to try out this Japanese restaurant the Hubs found as he was craving some sushi. One perk about Hyack aside from their reasonably priced dishes is their parking! As parking in parts of New West is not always easy to find nor free they have their own free parking! On to the food! We ordered Seafood Salad + Fantastic Roll + Prawn Tempura + Negitoro + Chopped Scallop & Toro Nigiri. The salad and fantastic roll was amongst our favourite! Both has a very refreshing sauce/dressing that makes you keep eating more! And the tempura here is fresh! You can tell they use fresh oil by how light and airy the tempura is!

      Updated review

Safety protocols are in place here. Tables have been removed and now the place is very spacious.

Paper menu is still available if you cannot scan the QR code.

Updating this review for the deep fried poached egg and pumpkin croquette. They still charge extra for any sauces here.

I always like to have nabeyaki udon when the weather is cold. Nothing like a hot bowl of soupy noodle to warm the body. The udon is still not the best I had but it will do in a pinch, especially in new west area. I like how the server brought the chili flakes bottle out together with the udon. That is being proactive.

Someone recommended the deep fried poached egg and I just had to try it. And yes, no regrets. It is super delicious! If you love runny yolk in poached egg, deep fried version is quite mind blowing. Crunchy crispy outer shell encasing the soft jiggly egg white and runny yolk. Yums!

The pumpkin croquette is also nicely done. Not oily and it heated up nicely the next day in the toaster oven when I had to pack the leftover.

I am not sure what else is good here but for now I am happy with the appetizer menu.
