I've worked with these guys three different times now, and they are consistently easy to work with and deliver excellent results.
Their professionalism, quality work, and fair pricing make them an excellent choice.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ron O.Sausalito, CA7777Apr 2, 2024
Easy five stars;
- Matt was very pleasant, professional, and easy to work with
- the estimated cost was reasonable, roughly the average of the 4 estimates I received
- the crew showed up on time every day (even worked one miserable, cold, misty day), and were friendly and polite
- the workmanship was excellent;
--- framing - rock solid; 30" deep piers with re-bar, massive 6" x 8" pressure treated beam, 2" x 8". pressure treated joists 12" on center, 2 rows of blocking, and joist hangers and hurricane ties everywhere. So solid that even the building inspector was impressed
--- decking - evenly spaced and well laid out, deck skirt and access door nicely attached, railing solidly attached (4 lag bolts onto joists at each post)
- timing/cost - completed on schedule at the agreed upon price ( I had 2 small change orders)

J&B have added so much to our house, and we can't recommend them highly enough! Their work is excellent, the workers (Ricardo & Ramon) are a joy to have around, and Matt, the owner, is extremely easy to work with and so responsive. Their work has completely changed the vibe of our house, and our neighbors are starting to update their fences as a result!

Awesome work and great customer service. Val was friendly, quick and efficient in taking measurements and giving us options. Mat was fantastic with his customer service. When we needed adjustments after the project was completed, Matt came over to assess the issues and got the job done. We appreciated working with JB Fence and would work with them again. Thank you!!

Updating from 1 to 3 stars. The company eventually got back to me and were quick to have someone come to my house to make the fence repair.
I'm very appreciative to have this fixed, but they should make improvements to how they field their emails and phone calls. I was close to having this repaired by a separate company before finally hearing from them.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jul 29, 2024Previous reviewHad a great experience with them installing my fence 5+ years ago, but I'm having a really hard time getting a response from them to address my repair and warranty question with one of my fence posts starting to become loose and unstable.
Doesn't matter how great a fence looks if we can't depend on a company to honor their warranty and respect their customers to reply in a timely manner. - Nelly ..Berkeley, CA023Jul 23, 2023
TOTALLY recommend J&B Fence Company. About 4 years ago, we hired Matt to install our southside fence and driveway gate and based on our experience with them, we re-hired them to do our 40' front yard fence (with a trellis and gate), and our northside 35' side fence (which included a small retaining wall).
Matt and Val are easy to work with, patiently answering all of our questions before we started the project. The crew (Tino & Luis) were super knowledgeable, enjoyable to work with, and skilled - the finished project was exactly what we asked for. Tino and Luis set the bar for others who may work with us in the future. Thank you!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 1 - Leah J.Oakland, CA07Apr 15, 2024

My neighbors and I hired JB Fence in 2018 with a ten year warranty on workmanship. My other neighbors and I hired a different fence company; that fence is fine. The fence constructed by JB Fence, however, has six rotted posts (according to their own assessment) a mere 5 years after being installed and is leaning over into my yard. See photo.
After several calls and texts, I heard back from the new owner, Matt Julian. Matt said he would send someone over in a week to look at it. He also said he was eating his lunch, implying I, the customer, was bothering him in calling him on his work number.
A week later, Val Ciabattari, his estimator, and the one that built the fence in 2018, came. Val informed us that he had worked in the business for 30 years, and while he built the fence in question, he had no idea what materials were used and that he wasn't the person to talk to - that is, the person Matt sent is, according to him, not the person to talk to. Val essentially disclosed that he is an ignorant "expert" with no authority. Val said that the company changed hands and that the contract and guarantee we were granted in 2018 is meaningless, that JB Fence won't honor the workmanship as stated in the contract, and that he (while being the same person that installed the fence) was ignorant as to what materials were used.
My neighbor, a woman, who hadn't yet spoken a word then asked calmly, "so to be clear: you're saying you won't honor your contract? (Yes) That's bullshit." He responded to her question by saying "this is getting aggressive." She wasn't aggressive as he claimed; she was, however, a woman asking a question he didn't like and simply repeating what he was saying. That bothered Val.
Val said he would be "pissed too" if a fence he paid for 5 years fell over due to bad workmanship and the warranty wouldn't be honored, but repeated that he's not the person to talk to. We asked "who is?" He said "Matt. I can call him." Val called Matt and said "Matt says he won't honor the warranty, it's not his problem what the firm built. You can call him though".
Val then stayed and kept talking. He had already said he's not going to help and that he's not someone that can make any decisions or knows anything about how the fence he himself constructed was built, but for that it had six rotten posts. My neighbor said "we heard, ok, you can leave now". After all, Val was not adding anything to the conversation, just repeatedly making excuses about how he doesn't know and that he'd be pissed too.
Val took offense that a woman told him that he could leave. As he walked out of my yard and down my driveway he cowered angrily and mumbled "f-ing bitch". I heard him and said "don't call her a bitch". He then challenged me to a fight in my driveway.
This is JB Fence. This is who you're inviting to your home for help.
They are ignorant of their workmanship and do not honor their warranties. They send Val, a self proclaimed ignorant "expert" with no authority, who agrees he too would be "pissed". The owner Matt is unresponsive and acts as if he's doing you a favor when he does actually pick up. And the employee he sends over knows nothing and takes offense to having to deal with a woman, whom he calls a "bitch" as he leaves. When called out about it, Matt's employee, Val, challenges you to fist fight on your own driveway.
I'd suggest you stay away from this misogynist firm that admittedly states that they do poor work and will not honor their warranties. The contract reads "Guarantee: All fence construction shall be guaranteed for workmanship for ten years". That is not something they will honor. Beware.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - molly d.Santa Monica, CA72615Sep 29, 2023Updated review
Updating review based off of the follow up response from Matt. We were able to resolve the issue and Matt was professional regarding the matter.
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 24, 2023Previous reviewJ&B installed our fence and new gate between our property and our two neighbors. The fence itself looks great. Our issue is with the workers who had absolutely no consideration for our plants. Plants were trampled on, bags of concrete laid on top, bricks thrown on them. They completely took one area of landscape out. I emailed Matt & Val with no acknowledgment of the situation. The guys finished the fence and still have had zero follow up regarding the destruction. Not happy.

Today being January 7, 2022, I finally resolved the invoice overcharge banking issue as they mailed me an overcharge check based upon their accounting error. Matt was apologetic since he came down with Covid, hence the 30+ delay on my inquiries. Once corrected a check was issue and received on Jan 7.
Not a 5 star job based on asking to come back to fix the items left behind. But Matt was very accommodating to being the foreman to repair the gaps and missing base trim. It looks great now and my neighbors are envious.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1Dec 27, 2021Previous reviewI can only give this fencing company 2 stars for the work completed before Thanksgiving week. As dictated in my Alameda HOA, I had only 2 choices on approved vendors that I need to work with replacing my entire perimeter fencing and my Arbor-Trellis. After receiving multiple quotes, I selected the more expensive company based on my HOA and vendor insurance liability. After the plans were approved by my HOA in August, JB schedule was over 2-3 months out so I selected the dates before Thanksgiving week. The entire process was started in February 2021. The fencing and Arbor looked professional and Matt/Val came by to inspected at the start of the job, it became a nightmare. My entire yard was a staging area for the back neighbor perimeter fencing as well. My landscaped wood chip backyard was a giant sand playground as wood chips were now buried under heaps of sand. The worse scenario happened when I received my invoice with an $800 overcharge based on my signed contract. They failed to submit an itemized invoice on what the overcharge was. Despite emails and phone calls to JB Fencing, no response by Matt or their invoice employee about the overcharge, for over a month, since the fence was built. It is now past Christmas and I now have to refer to my attorney to litigate the signed contract and "no estimate overcharge" as illegal business practice for Alameda homeowners. I will also send my litigation letter to our HOA board on JB Fencing
