I recently moved over to the Lake Street/Laurel Heights area and we decided to check out the gym at the Jewish Community Center. I had heard the gym was really nice but I didn't know if it was going to be nice enough to warrant the rather steep prices to join. Boy was I wrong. After our tour of the gym my husband and I immediately decided to join. I really like how nice the gym is, there are plenty of machines and the women's locker room is nice. I also like how friendly all the staff are. Even the guys who stock the towels always have a friendly smile for you. I really makes me like the gym is a welcome place. And note, I HATE going to the gym but since we've joined I've been at least a couple times a week. All the machines are very modern and all have individual TVs so that probably helps a lot. I would really recommend joining this gym. Plus you get membership to the JCC which has a lot of cool classes and you get discounts at a lot of the local businesses in Laurel Village.

This is my all time favorite chill and hangout place. It has everything that I need in a community center. The JCCSF offers great events which includes the speaker series called "Talks and Conversations". I love the JCCSF classes (foreign languages, fitness, dance, music, swimming pool, and more). I absolutely love reading and hanging out in the amazingly beautiful atrium. The cafe is opening soon.
Also, the JCCSF is near Muni Transportation and has a parking garage. Please visit the JCCSF and give it 5 stars too ...smileHelpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Alas, back again with an update re: the fitness center. The air conditioning in the gym fell apart last year, and then again this week. Think Bikram Zumba. The whole gym floor is warmer than normal. It's like you don't need to work out to sweat.
Last month, they failed to announce clearly that the women's locker rooms would be closed for three days.
And earlier this spring, they reconfigured all the gym equipment and removed some popular items. Without surveying gym members. It was a mess. We still don't understand why they made those changes.
If it weren't for certain classes on the JCCSF schedule, we would join another gym. So maybe consider that before you come here.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Amelyn, thanks so much for being a dedicated JCCSF Fitness Center member and for your thoughtful feedback! We are in the process of creating language-inclusive signage solutions for our guests, especially for sensitive topics like requirements for masks and vaccinations. We also appreciate you for bringing the fitness class cancellation miscommunication to our attention, we will make sure to review our process and make the necessary changes to improve the experience.
Apr 13, 2022Previous reviewIt's been a long road to reopening for all gyms. As far as amenities, equipment, variety of group classes...no one beats the JCCSF gym. I still think signage and marketing posters could be more inclusive and diversity-sensitive. (Multiple people asked me if they had to be Jewish to be a member! lol)
If you enjoy Zumba, there is a class EVERY day. And the instructors are amazing and fun. After a year of dancing with that team, I am down a full jean size (without any big changes to my diet). The instructors here really move the world! (And the locker rooms are swanky and sparkle!) Go!Feb 14, 2022Previous reviewFirst, I have been a fitness center member for over a decade. The fitness floor with equipment is great, lots to choose from and is all well maintained. The monthly dues/rates are fair. A good value for a gym. Locker rooms are beautiful. Aquatic area is excellent.
I am subtracting two stars for managements inability to communicate adequately and use best practices for proper signage. Signage does not support members whose first language is not English. This is a problem for many older members who are immigrants. A number of us requested better signs to remind people to wear masks properly. And as it is, some members are taking it upon themselves to enforce the rules because sign placement is at the bare minimum, eg one sign at the doors/entrances...nowhere else. (There was a particularly memorable incident in the steam room involving an iPhone video documenting a disagreement between two women and whether masks were required in the steam room...all that may have been avoided if the signs were clear!)
Unpleasant and completely avoidable if the management would put more effort into thoughtful, best practice communications.
Also, when classes are cancelled or changed, the communication is also poor. We have found ourselves waiting for a 7a class that was cancelled. No announcement, no messaging . Administration here is becoming less customer-focused, and based on the attrition of staff members over the last several years, it seems as though the issue is likely systemic.
Given how happy going to the gym makes me, I am conflicted on whether I would recommend the place given the aforementioned decline in community-focused services. (I have gone in almost every day since they reopened in March 2021.) Do they really just care about our membership dues, and nothing else? Ugh. - Scott K.San Francisco, CA025Aug 11, 2023
This is regarding the JCC's swim classes:
The JCC will not teach your child to be water safe.
This is because their instructors are NOT CERTIFIED in anything. Kids are stuck in small partitioned areas of a shallow pool, so they don't have room to swim more than a few feet. As a result, my child could not swim properly after more than two years of lessons at the JCC.
My child could not tread water. He could not glide for more than a few feet. He was not water safe because he was NEVER taught to be water safe.
We found a water safety certified instructor at another school and, within a month, my kid was treading water and swimming much more properly. He's finally on his way to being a strong, safe swimmer.
I just wish I had left JCC sooner. I could have saved a lot of time and money.Helpful 8Thanks 4Love this 1Oh no 6 - Mike B.Newark, CA115Dec 15, 2023
Returned to this place hoping to relive the good old days, but was saddened to find that it no longer offers massage services or has a cafe. It used to be my go-to spot for relaxation and enjoyment. Missing the charm it once had.

This place was pretty good, but they just removed several of their circuit training machine and moved the machines too close together. The wait times for the machines have increased, so I'll be finding another gym. It's no longer worth $175 per month. Also, the quality of their classes and trainers are not great.

The JCCSF is a great place for kids who are learning to swim. The facilities are family friendly and super clean. The teaching is very good and I found the staff to be very helpful and responsive. The class size is small. Plus, there is convenient parking in the building. I highly recommend checking it out!

Some plusses to this gym for sure: clean (excellent cleaning crew), safe (lots of security), well kept equipment and lots of classes.
Some negatives that are very important to me, maybe not to you. Important enough that I will start seeking another gym.
-One of the main reasons I joined was because it has lots of windows that OPEN. Until recently they were opened and it was wonderful for you health, etc. Now that they close them, gym smells and I feel more likely to 'catch' something.
-WAY too many people texting in-between sets. Sorry, but there should be a no communication on cell phone policy (there is only a not talking--but text is quite akin to talking). Thus often a long wait for someone to do their three sets in the time I could have done 10!
-At times there seems to be more trainers than gym goers. Said trainers use all the good machine for very lengthy times in order to explain each exercise--this should be limited during peak times!
-Trainers (I could see a newbie doing this) using and training folks with a jump rope in the middle of peak times! (great excercise but very dangerous to be performing whilst gym is crowded. I have seen this many times.
-Most men are NOT washing their hands when done using the bathroom--yuck. Gym can't control that, but they could certainly put up signs.
-The cardio machine are WAY too close to each other. Lose a couple of them (they are never all filled) and create some space!
-Emails to staff NEVER get answered. I have sent 3x.
-Parking is expensive.Helpful 7Thanks 3Love this 2Oh no 1 - Stephen W.San Francisco, CA01May 5, 2024
ive been a continuous gym member for almost the past 10 years, and was also a member back in the late 90s, at the old JCC. would normally give the gym 4 stars, but two weeks ago, everyone returned to the gym after the passover holiday to discover that they reconfigured the entire gym floor. popular equipment and machines had been REMOVED altogether, or moved to non-sensical locations and placed more closely together in cramped spaces, while unnecessarily and overly-increasing the open stretching area (as if one cant stretch at home?). it's chaotic and disruptive with so many people fighting over fewer machines and equipment. NO other gym-goers ive spoken to are pleased with this--as one person commented to me, "this is a clear case of if it aint broke, dont fix it." and one of the gym staff attendants said they werent even informed that the changes were going to happen. what level of incompetence is required to make such unwanted changes that weren't based on customer or gym staff feedback?
BIG FAIL (MASSIVE) to whoever concocted this plan. please remedy this or you'll be losing members.Helpful 4Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1Business owner information

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for your post and I'm disappointed you aren't happy with the new floor layout. The intention was to create more open space for dynamic exercises and functional training. That said, we are listening to our members and will be rolling back certain adjustments in the coming weeks based upon the feedback we have received. Please keep coming to the fitness center and share your feedback - we're listening. - M L.San Francisco, CA03Nov 6, 2023Updated review
