Kaisen don

Love the service of the place and their sashimi is always fresh and high quality. This would be a place you want to visit if you enjoy older style Japanese restaurant. Lots of seating and lots of selection of sake/beer as well. I would take friends and family for birthday celebration here all the time if they want Japanese food as their choice.

What a random find that I'm sooo glad to have come across! HIGHLY recommend!

I was tasked with coordinating a last-minute team building event. I chose Kaisen Don for food as it was on the way for me and it was one of the few places that offered sushi platters on their website, which made it so easy for me to order and budget.

I was planning for ~25 guests, and ordered 7 sushi plates (which turned out to be more than enough). For such a big order, I made sure to place it at least 3-4 days ahead of time. Inevitably, I had last minute changes. I called the day before to request 2 additional sushi plates without any problems, and on the day of the order was ready for me at my appointed time. They even added additional sides at no additional cost!

The real star for me was Crystal, who more than graciously loaded the massive order to the car on such a hot day. She asked a bit of details of the party, like when it would start. I said it would be 2 hours from now (I had to drive an hour to the venue). She asked if I had a cooler... I did not... and without hesitation, she filled a bunch of bags with ice to keep the trays cool for my journey, and wrapped each tray individually to prevent any potential mess in my car.

I arrived with the trays looking perfect, the raw fish stayed cool and fresh, and everything turned out amazing! Everybody kept asking where the food was from because it was so good!

Knowing that the staff is amazing and the food is tasty, I look forward to dining here one of these days because the inside looks pretty cool!

We went on a Sunday Evening , plenty of seats open. They have a special menu on paper but their regular menu is through a QR code. The picture is small but it's not including the function to place order. We still order from the staffs but by that time we already forget want we want and lose track of the price.

Food is good but overall small portions and high prices.

Met up with some close friends and had a late dinner/snack and ordered off their Happy Hour menu.

Two orders of Tempura: Fried shrimp & vegetable (4/5). Light, crunchy batter, and not much oil.

Garlic Salted Fried Tofu (3.5/5). Cubed and fried tofu. Not much flavor, but nicely fried. [Sorry, no pic].

Oden (Mochi Kinchaku): Mochi rice cake wrap with fried tofu pouch in house broth (4/5). It's a bit small on the portion size. But it was pretty good.

Takoyaki: Batter cooked octopus serves with special house-made spicy mayo (3.5/5)

Chicken Karaage: Fried chicken served with a Sriracha aioli sauce and lemon wedge. (3.5/5). Bite-sized crispy morsels of chicken in a batter.

Soup of the Day: Daily fish miso broth , daikon radish , carrot , scallion (Slow cooked 5 hours). (3.5/5). Flavorful and tasty soup.

Of all the places in the Bay, I wouldn't have guess San Leandro to have this covert and demure, yet delicious sushi spot w/ tatami style seating! Birthday girl's choice and Kaisen Don it is! With a $700 check (+ gratuity) we did order til our heart's content of all the mouthwatering Omakase, Kaisen Don, Platters, Rolls, and a whole bunch of appetizers...it is fairly pricey here but per the chef, fish is shipped from Japan! Service was impeccable, excellent, quick, and friendly! We had a whole area to ourselves and we laughed and cheered and celebrated life for our girl. It was a very nice luncheon out! Even Lola Babalina had a good time! Arigato Kaisen! We cant wait to revisit and order more sushi!

We went to this location for my birthday lunch and I'd say the sushi quality is pretty good and fairly priced. I got the scallop chirashi bowl which was tasty, however it was on the slightly smaller side for my liking. They were kind enough to offer a small birthday ice cream which they almost charged us for but we thankful caught that and brought it up with our waitress, who quickly addressed that for us. Overall it was a good spot for sushi especially since we don't often go out to eat sushi these days.

After leaving a concert at the Oakland Coliseum, we were in looking for somewhere to eat and I noticed this place was still open. So glad we dropped in. Service was so friendly and made us welcome, despite coming in so last minute. We ordered three of their featured rolls ( sunset, estudillo and lion king) and the sashimi salad. All were so fresh and delicious. The inside of the restaurant was nicely decorated. Definitely will return when back in the area.

First time here. The sushi is delicious, fresh, tasty, and well plated. I enjoyed the calm environment which all made for a wonderful dining experience. Just missed happy hour which ended at 6:30.

First time dining here and we had such an awesome experience. Our server was so sweet and attentive. We ordered the lion king, scallop, and dragon roll. They all tasted so yummy. The scallop and lion king are very similar rolls but I preferred the lion king. A really nice place to get your sushi fix!

Went for Lunch

Food - 5/5. Sushi here is exquisite and very beautiful. Each nigiri was perfectly uniform in shape and the rice ratio was excellent. Every fish was great but I was most surprised by their tuna. Despite being a lean cut, it was melt-in-your-mouth tender while maintaining a nice bite. Rolls were uniform and packed well with the nori having a pleasant "clean" taste to it. The namesake kaisen don had fresh and salty ikura, sweet crab and delicately soft scallops. Rice had a good amount of vinegar and sweetness that paired well with the seafood. Miso soup was rich and the edamame was cooked well.

Service - 4/5. Professional and courteous service.

Value - 4/5. The sushi is delicious and the portion sizes are standard for sushi combos being 7 nigiri plus a roll. It is very expensive with combo A at $28, Combo B at $36 and the kaisen don being $30. While delicious and worth a visit, it could easily make a dent on your wallet.

The food was great! I was so happy to see that they had a rice bowl of Toro. Their cuts were so buttery that it practically melted in my mouth. The amount of rice, and other toppings they put that I don't know the names of made the whole bowl worth it. We also got the lion king and baked scallops roll which was warm with a slight kick of spice in each bite. The restaurant itself is beautifully designed inside as if you stepped into a traditional Japanese restaurant. Our waiter was very attentive and kind throughout our meal. Will definitely be coming back for more!
