A:
Lam Kwong has never done Lunch Specials on Saturdays. It's too much work for the staff to cook all that food six days a week.

No , in July they close for week or two because it's slow and the school is closed.on the door outside they always leave a note.

Aug 6, 2024I discovered this hidden gem about three years ago when I had recently began orientation work for a job. I was looking for a quick Chinese lunch and came across Lam Kwong
Ever since then every time we're looking for a quick and good Chinese lunch spot this is our go to. They have some of the best chow mein in Sacramento and also some cheap dimsum items. Their ha gao and siu mai are definitely top three in Sacramento for us. Their lunch specials are also GREAT and cheap.
It's a really homie spot once you walk in with a small table in there but it's hardly rare to see anyone actually utilizing it as it's really only a takeout spot.
It does suck that it's a cash only spot, I personally wouldn't mind having to pay like a dollar more for that . Be prepared to bring in some bills in order to obtain the goods.
Other than that make sure to pay them a visit when you're in the downtown area and looking for delicious Chinese

Samantha M.Arden-Arcade, CA08May 3, 2024I got 3 dozen cocktail buns for my son's class for his birthday. They were so much more special than cupcakes or cookies from the supermarket. Picking them up at 8am when the bakery opened, the bread was still warm.
Some Chinese bakeries use a sticky egg wash to glaze the tops of gaimeibao, charsiubao, etc. This place does not glaze the tops. It makes it less fancy to look at but cleaner to hold.
They also have many baked/steamed filled buns. No frills, nothing fancy, seating but no service, cash only. This is the simple and tasty.Helpful 2Thanks 3Love this 3Oh no 0

She's never been there before and I forgot it's cash only. Ahha....but we were able to pay for our little kit kat type of meal consisting of three of these, three of those and so on and so forth. My daughter came for the dim sum and I couldn't sway her to get a plate.

Jun 24, 2024Small market in Downtown Sac that's been here for many, many years. It's cash only. Great place for baos; the baked cha siu baos are my favorite menu item. Affordable & good food. They do sell out of things, so it's better to come in the earlier hours.

Family ran, small business selling dim sum and hot Chinese food. CASH only. The dim sum recipes are old school Cantonese. The hot food is classic Americanized Chinese. The place is not fancy.
I usually go there the first thing in the morning when they open at 8am. They already have a selection of fresh dim sum and fried chicken (drumsticks and thighs). They have BBQ pork buns, pineapple buns, cocktail buns, hot dog buns, shu mai, har gow always at the morning get go at 8am. They might even have sesame balls, ham sui goo (fried pork filled glutinous rice dumplings, fried chicken, and egg custards ready to go.
I enjoy all the dim sum. Plus the fresh fried chicken in the morning makes for a tasty breakfast.
The nondescript shop is on the corner of U and 12th Street in the urban downtown suburb. It's across the street from an elementary school. Parking is free street parking with more spots across the street on U Street (those are pull in spots).

Let me tell 'ya, the dim sum, baked baos, and hot food are tasty. I must have tried everything on the menu; there is nothing that I have not liked. So besides the yummy food, the sincere kindest of the owners just adds to the reasons that keeps me coming back.
When you hear the word downtown, you might be turned off by the parking. Not to fear, there are no meters in this area. The spots are free. Plus if parallel parking ain't your thing; they have angled parking spots across the street on U street.
I usually get here a bit before 8am which is when they open. Right off the bat, they are geared to go with trays of baked bbq pork baos, baked cocktail buns (two kinds), sui mai, and har gow. By 8:30, they may have egg tarts, fried pork turnovers, and fried sesame balls ready. Gradually before lunchtime, they will have the hot food ready. The sell lunch plates. That includes the likes of char sui, fried chicken, orange chicken, broccoli n beef. I'm sure I'm missing something, the menu is huge.
My fave is the sui mai. The flavors are spot on for my tastebuds, not to strong or understate. Hello, their fried chicken is delicious. Nice thick crisp batter coating with moist chicken inside. It's not excessively oily. The egg tarts are good and so picture perfect sitting with its glossy yellow color filling and golden layered crust. The crust on those are flakier and buttery than traditional versions. Their pork turnovers are tasty but toned down from the traditional version with pickled vegetables (which as you guessed is pretty fragrant). The baked pork baos and cocktail baos are all right. Very bready.
To reiterate this place ain't fancy. It's a small family ran business. Not only do they sell some darn tasty eats; they sell newspapers written in Chinese. Many local neighbors come in to grab a paper and banter a bit with the owners in Cantonese. A throwback to the days of neighborhood mom n pop shops. The owners do speak English as well. They are so very kind. I appreciate the sincere attentive service. I am still luvin this small family run Chinese dim sum deli in downtown Sacramento on the corner of 12th and U Streets. It is CASH ONLY. They gots' some tasty baked char sui baos, delectable fried sesame balls, and ohhh those cocktail buns. The folks are welcoming.
The bread for the baos are soft, pillowy with a golden top. Inside is a mix of savory char sui pork. The deep fried sesame ball as a light crunchy crust with a flavorful creamy red bean paste filling. Mmm. The cocktail buns has a tasty custard filling with hints of coconut wrapped in buttery bread. The sui mai (steamed pork dumpling wrapped in wonton peel) flavors are milder tasting (less authentic) than I am use to. As is the deep fried pork sweet rice balls. They are still tasty. But I suppose alot of folks can find the authentic flavors of pickled vegetables and dried black mushrooms to be a bit bold tasting.
Did I mention this is a CASH ONLY place. Yup, like it or not, they are. It is a small mom n pop shop. Secondly, even though they have the word "market" in their business name. It really isn't. It is a hot food and dim sum take out place. They serve up some tasty dim sum ( baked bbq pork buns, coconut buns, cocktail buns, hai gow, sui mai, fried sesame balls, fried pork turnovers), fried chicken, chow mein, fried rice, chai sui, and stir fry vegetables. The dim sum are ready right when they open at 8am. Sometimes the hot food is ready as well. They have lunch plates and sell party trays.
They are located in the downtown suburbs on the corner of 12th and U street. If parallel parking is not your thing, you are in luck. Since then I came back because the dim sum is delicious, the location is convenient, and the folks are extremely adorable ... once they got use to me... it took them awhile to warm up to me. Ha!
It is a little itty bit shop on the corner of U and 12th street in Sacramento right smack in a neighborhood of homes. Parking is relegated to street parking.
The shop is no frills shop mainly selling dim sum and hot lunch combos (fried rice, chow menu, fried chicken, roasted pork, bbq pork, etc)... check out the menu pics. Grab n go place. My go to are the pork baos, egg custard, su mai, fried pork dumplings, and fried sesame bean paste balls. Boy I sound like a glutton. It's so good and reasonably priced.
The folks speak English well enough to communicate. Kind folks.

I come back because their dim sum and Chinese baked goods, which are pretty decent, are the only game around that is in a convenient location for me.
I didn't have anymore lost in translation moments. Actually, I have since had top notch service. The staff are sweethearts. So I'm bumping up my rating.
My faves are the sui mai and sesame balls. They were hefty sized and flavorful. The pork baos are pretty good also. The pricing is good, very affordable. This little shop is also very clean. It is smack in the tree lined neighborhood of homes on the corner of 12 and U, so street parking it is.

I called in to pick up 2 dozen baked bbq pork bao and 1 dozen cocktail buns. She repeats it back over the phones , it is correct. I go to pick them up. The woman was about 5 feet away from me behind the counter and lifts the box lid to show me. But instead of cocktail buns, I see coconut buns. No biggie, I explained that I wanted cocktail not coconut. She than persists to tell me 3xs that they have the same filling. I explain to her I understand they have the same filling and I do not want the crumbly flaky crust of the coconut bun. And I added it is messy to eat and I want the cocktail. It was a stand still. She was not budging. Very odd. I told her, I don't understand why she does not want to sell me what I want. Still no movement. Odd considering the case with all the items were right in front of us. I pondered and internally thought, how do I fix this situation. I sternly told her I do not need to buy anything and can leave walk out right now; or she can sell me 2 dozen baked pork baos and 1 dozen cocktail buns. Boy...did her attitude change. It was like a switch turned. She started moving and packing the cocktail buns. Good grief! What an ordeal!?! Ugh! I felt like I was in a Seinfeld episode. As George would say..."I can't "standzs" it anymore". To keep my sanity I will not be coming back anytime in the near future. May 23, 2024The chowfun was delicious! It consisted of lots of bok choi and beef. The chowfun was cooked just right as it was evenly browned, but not overcooked and mushy. The baos were very fluffy and moist. It gets busy during lunch so it is best to arrive early before they sell out. The siu mai and ha gao were delicious and contained a generous portion of meat.

Nov 14, 20231 check-inI've been wanting to check out this little gem. This place has your basic dim sum items and some hot entry. I was craving shu mai, so I decided to check this place out before work.
When I first enter in, I was greeted by the worker. I new exactly what I wanted. I got a Cha Sui Bao, Ha Gao, and Shu Mai. Everything tasted good, but the highlight of the show was the Cha Sui Bao. The bun was full of meat. The bun was also more on the sweeter side which was interesting, probably from the honey on the bun.
Overall, I would come back for the buns and to try their hot food. This place is more of a grab and go place, not really a place to sit down and have a nice meal.
Overall I highly recommend this place. It's a hidden gem!

Delicious dim sum. We got siu mai, har gow, baked pork buns (not pictured), and pineapple buns (not pictured). There weren't many people in line so the service was quick. There isn't a place to sit and eat so plan to take it to go or eat it in your car. We had about a 20 minute drive home and I had a pork bun in the car on the way. Yummy! Highly

They have dim sum on certain days which is nice. Unfortunately they only take cash....so bring cash! Enjoy the experience of shopping at this Chinese market!
