Stopped by in mid December for their tasting menu. We were seated right away and the server explained each course as they brought them out. The taste and presentation were amazing for all the dishes...many of these items I had not tried previously and was very pleasantly surprised. Started with yellowtail fish with a black truffle sauce and ended with foie gras mushroom rice with halibut, scallops and crab in between.
It was a positive sushi experience and happy to recommend M Sushi Bar.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0 - Dec 18, 2019Updated review
I came here a few days ago with my son. Since I had an excellent experience last time, I wanted to come back and try other items.
We were seated right away. We ordered miso soup, assorted sashimi, volcano roll, nigiri sushi, and salmon aburi. It took a while for us to get our food.
The first thing my son noticed was the wasabi. For some reason, it didn't mixed smoothly with the soy sauce. I thought it's kinda weird too. I don't remember how it was the first time I was there which was 6 months ago.
Sushi and sashimi were fresh, but for some reason, I didn't enjoy it as much as I did as last time. Service was acceptable.
*The only annoying thing is the washroom is located outside the restaurant.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Jun 7, 2019Previous reviewMy friend raved about this restaurant constantly on IG and I'm easily influenced. Lol! Since it was my friend's birthday (a different friend) yesterday and she wanted sushi so naturally I had to bring her here.
We arrived at 11:30am (they just opened) and it was just us and another couple. We were greeted right away. I had no clue what to order so I showed the server my friend's IG photos. She told me exactly what were the dishes and I basically replicated my friend's previous order.
Oh man, I honestly wish I came with more people because the sushi was so good and fresh! EVERYTHING we had was impeccable. From the thinly sliced salmon sashimi to the black cod. Their aburi sushi was to die for but of course Minami is still my fav but I like the prices here more. Lol. The black cod was a bit small but nonetheless it just melted in my mouth.
Service was excellent. Prices are reasonable. I paid all those food (see my photos) and it was the same price as Masayoshi (see my review) for ONE PERSON.
If you ever want sushi and in Steveston, give this place a try. :) - Nov 24, 2016
The Sushi Bar was located on West 4th for years and now they moved to Steveston in Richmond with new name "M Sushi Bar". It sounded like they moved to another world. That's ok, as long as they continue to serve good quality food, I will follow them. What is M sushi Bar? M means Chef Mathew's kitchen.
It newly renovated, bright and cozy. On the wall side, they have cool fish tank as décor with warm fire place underneath.
Per my previous review for "The sushi Bar", they would take pre-order and prepare Omakase menu in advance.
I have 2 best friend's birthday in Nov and hope to give them a surprise on their special day.
11/15 Omakase menu, I called and gave them my budget ($60-80) per head to let them surprise us.
First course - Hamachi Carpaccio with white truffle oil, it looked great and slight tasted truffle aroma on each bite.....
Second course - Smoked Salmon Salad, it's cool and we able to smell the smoke when the lid open (pretty similar to Masayoshi one and check out my video)
Third course - Blue Fin O-Toro, Salmon O-Toro, Hamachi O-Toro! OMG! We got more than enough omega 3.
Four course - Aburi nigiri (Botan Ebi, Hotate, Engawa, Foie Gras, Wagyu beef)
Five course - Miso black cod, it's tasty.
Last course - Tofu cheese, it's light and not sweet (just perfect for us)
11/22 I came back a week after with my other best friend but I called to pre-order the dishes that I wanted this time.
1st Starter - Uni and Lobster with Tobiko mille-feuille, this chef creation dish really impressed us! Fresh uni , chopped poached lobster with crispy tobiko and lobster soup jello. It's tasty.
2nd Starter - Mini smoked wild sockeye salmon, it served in mini size this time but the smoke didn't long last this time.
Sashimi -Mirugai, Kanpachi, Hamchi and Blue fin o-toro, The geoduck absolutely the star, it's so fresh and crunchy! I We liked the Kanpachi in thick cut, really delicious and O-Toro very fatty and yummy. It all presented beautifully.
Aburi nigiri: Botan Ebi, Hotate, Engawa, Saba and Wagyu beef. Yes. It's not authentic sushi but It's beautiful fusion aburi nigiir!
Last dish - Miso black cod, it's divine!
Overall, all the dishes we had really pleased my eyes and stomach! We got the highest-quality sashimi and other splendid dishes to satisfy us.
I would recommend to call in advance to reserve some special sashimi and they could do it! This is a new good Japanese restaurant in Steveston for sure.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - 208492643Oct 11, 2016First to Review
This is really 4.5 stars. Located at a prime location on Bayview at Steveston, this fusion-based Japanese restaurant may well present some competition to other establishments in the neighbourhood. Don't let Chef M's handsome, young face fool you. He is a seasoned chef (no pun intended) who is dedicated to producing fine Japanese food artistically.
The hotate (scallop) from Hokkaido was delightfully fresh, as was the amaebi (raw prawn). Chef M prepares his own soy sauce which is brushed on top of these two sushi. The wild sockeye salmon a great option to Atlantic, and is available on all salmon items. A nice surprise was the salmon tartare with deep fried gyoza skin.
We tried other kitchen items including chicken karaage which was absolutely perfect - juicy, crispy, tender, and no need for sauce. The chicken udon was served with a generous portion of chicken.
Prices are reasonable given the freshness and location. The place is relatively intimate with not one but two fish tanks along the wall. Decoration is tastefully clean and simple. Parking is available right in front of the restaurant with its own stalls. Service is friendly and attentive. This place really should be 5 stars but the long wait for food may test the impatient ones. But, you know what they say: "Good food takes time." And it was well worth the wait. So I'll say it's 4.5 stars.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Anne C.Steveston, Richmond, Canada0216Jul 6, 2018
This is a place to get good quality and fresh aburi nigiri and sashimi. Plating is nice. It's cozy and the waitresses are very friendly and helpful. We asked her lots of questions about the menu and she was able to answer them. They can speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Went there at 1:30 pm on Canada day and there was no wait for a table for 3. We ate until we were a good full, ordered a pricier uni (sea urchin), and spent $54 per person with tips. I'd definitely go back again to try their other items, like oshi sushi, omakase, foie gras!
Now on to the details of the food!
The aburi nigris are amazing - all highly recommended. We had...
Salmon toro - fatty and delicious.
Engawa (flounder's edge) - literally melts in your month, fatty and delicious.
Anago (saltwater eel) - this was 1 big piece of eel on top of one piece of rice. It's soft and flavourful. Recommended if you want to try something different!
Hotate (Hokkaido scallop) - BIG and fresh
Want something special?
Hokkaido uni - 8 small pieces, incredibly creamy and fresh! Comes with dried seaweed and fresh wasabi. Highly recommended.
Need carbs?
Seafood udon - Broth had the sweetness of seafood, noodles were good, toppings were good quality seafood, the scallop was big and delicious
Unagi don (eel rice bowl) - The eel texture was just how I liked it, slightly firm with a good bite. The portion size was good.
Rolls?
Red Bull - Good taste, but unfortunately didn't taste special enough for it to be $18. It has Angus beef on top and uses real crab meat.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Elaine X.Vancouver, Canada57024Apr 2, 2017
Yum! I love this place because I'm not a big rice eater and their nigiris have a very skewed fish/wagyu to rice ratio. Everything I tried tonight was lovely, I would definitely recommend this place and return.
Best: wagyu nigiri
Meh: smoked salmon salad (good for instagram, meh for the taste)Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Andy K.Markham, Canada67214295Jun 15, 2017
Stumbled on this place randomly one night while in Steveston, initially the plan was to eat at the Blue Canoe which is right next door to this place but had to wait. So during the wait, walked around and saw this place and it had a grand opening sign so probably it had just opened up not too long ago.
The space inside is quite small, can only seat at most is approx 20 people max I believe. They also do not have a washroom within the restaurant and its required that you go outside and into the public washroom next door which is a bit inconvenient.
Aside, from some interior flause the food was exceptional! The sushi there is really top notch! For one, your right in Steveston so your going to be getting the freshest fish in any restaurant you choose but in terms of sushi this place is bomb!
Ordered sockeye salmon sashimi, which is always a personal favorite and always tastes good.
Also ordered the volcano scallop rolls which were really tasty as well. The sauce they include in the rolls is very good. Also ordered tuna aburi's and sockeye salmon oshi's
The salmon oshi's were really good!!! I've tried multiple places for oshi sushi and tried to compare it to Miku and so many places didn't compare at all to Miku's standard (Miku ruined me pretty much for oshi sushi... =( ) But this I personally thought that the closets thing that was similar to Miku. The seared mayo on the salmon was very good, the fish and pressed rice were made very well! All food items ordered was very good.
The servers were also very nice and kept refilling our tea whenever it got low so good customer service from everyone there! Definitely going to come back and try more itemsHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kenneth N.Richmond, Canada2297676910023Apr 13, 2017
The next best option if not feeling mood to drive all the way to Taka's in White Rock.
Remember, this isn't your standard Sushi rolls, the higher-end aburi & pressed salmon, which passed with flying colours. Better than Minami.
But service, which normally I don't expect much, could be better considering we were just the 2nd table.
And server lied about tamago, NOT made in-house. Taste of that totally sucked, stay away, not the chef's fault. Wouldn't been a good gesture to have taken that off the bill.
Nice corner location with lots of light.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
