Great service, nice a quick. Food was really great, and menu was easy to navigate, having never tried most of the food before.

Once, a good quick neighbourhood meal, casual, but friendly, good selection on the menu, easy fast priced right meal.
We used to like this place, good-not great, always feels comfortable and ok value.

Tonight was a total miss - amateur hour for sure, service was crazy slow, no beverage refills , food wasn't that good ....nigiri's were falling over, crab nigiri was 70% mayonnaise.... ick, ick, Ick!
Lots of take out here, at times seems the priority.

It is really annoying to have the take out people staring at you meal, coughing and hacking away as they stand awkwardly close to your table... go away!!

Crispy tempura was the only highlight :(

In no hurry to come back....

No fish in the fried rice, tiny portion of special roll that cost 15 bucks. If I want real good sushi go to Victoria downtown and try Zen sushi. Will not recommend tourist to try this place.

Unagi fried rice, where are the unagi? So chef's name is probably unagi, and he fried the rice. Also rolls are tiny, can't fill up at all

My favourite Japanese restaurant in Victoria! Friendly staff. Great food. I've worked through the menu and haven't come across anything that's not excellent.

They also do amazing sushi platters for parties and are able to cater to gluten-free.

I've struggled to find "my" sushi spot in the 2-3 months I've lived here, since moving from Ontario. I ended up coming to Machi at the recommendation of my neighbours. Though Machi is not the best sushi I've ever had (West coast or otherwise), it is certainly the best I have had since moving to Victoria. I ordered an appetizer of the agedashi tofu, a spicy tuna roll, and their special Vancouver roll (effectively, a deep-fried California roll with some special sauce on top). The quality of the food ranged from good to awesome.

The agedashi tofu was great. Not the best I've had (that spot is reserved, strangely, for a spot in Brampton, Ontario, called Sushi House [amazing place, if you're in the GTA]), but easily the best I've had in Victoria. *Every* other place I've tried it--3 or 4 spots now--just douses the sushi after it's been fried in the sauce, and leaves it sitting in it. The result is super soggy tofu, which is totally not the point. Machi, by contrast, fries their tofu, and then serves the sauce on the side for you to dip; the result is perfectly fried tofu (though I wish they used bigger [and fewer] pieces, because you don't really get much tofu flavour).

Next, the spicy tuna roll was outstanding. I don't know what it was about it--it didn't look all that special--but the flavour and texture were just completely on point. I might end up ordering one every time I come from now on; it made me that happy.

The Vancouver roll, finally, was good too. Though as the most expensive thing I ordered, it didn't feel like especially good value. Still, I intend to try a few of their other specialty rolls out in my next few visits, as it may just be a matter of finding which ones are the "gems" on the menu.

Service at Machi was also pretty great. My waitress was quick, friendly, and helpful (she convinced me to go spicy tuna vs. salmon). The food also came out very quick. My only minor complaint is that the tofu came out with my rolls (actually a minute or two after), as opposed to before (as I would expect with an appetizer). But this was hardly enough to even come close to ruining what was otherwise a great dining experience.

So, as good as it gets, ever? No. But Machi is the best I've found in Victoria so far, and it was more than good enough to ensure I'll be coming back in the future.

In my opinion this has got to be the best japanese restaurant in town. All of the sashimi was fresh and tasty. The presentation of the food is perfection. Furthermore, Andy the owner is super friendly. When I'm in town, I'm definitely coming back.

We were simply driving by the other day and realized there was a sushi place we hadn't been to. And we go to a lot of sushi places! So, we came the next day.

Unassuming and hardly "eye-catching", Machi Sushi sits in a barely visible corner of a pretty bare strip-mall style neighbourhood corner. However, entering in, the cozy sushi bar is modern, clean, and comfortable. I have no idea how long it's been here, but not that long by the looks of things.

We were greeted right away, and picked our own table. Menu's came fast. My first complaint was the fact that they only offered Sapporo beer on tap, but no matter: I wasn't here for beer anyway.

We ordered the "Dream Roll" combo which had a large assortment of rolls, including one of their "specialty" rolls. It also included salad and miso soup and ice cream to boot!

The soup and salad came first. While nothing out of the ordinary, the soup was perfectly salted (often miso soup can be either too salted or flavourless), and while most sushi places offer the same salad, this one was actually *presented*, rather than being thrown onto a plate and doused in dressing/oil. There was surprising care taken over these two standard dishes that bode well for the rest of the meal.

The sushi rolls arrived and I tried each one after another. Not a single one disappointed. Not even the very basic style roll that is one meat wrapped in rice and then seaweed, with nothing else. The seaweed tasted fresh, and the rice was perfectly cooked. If I had to nit-pick something, there was a little too much fisheggs on some of the rolls, but frankly I can't complain about any of them. The specialty roll was also fantastic.

Finally, the small serving of ice cream was good wrap up. But, without any apparent reason, the chef also gifted us a second small dessert!

We left very satisfied, and think we have found our new sushi place!

We are from Vancouver and wanted to treat some family for sushi.

We ordered a few specialty rolls, spicy sashimi, some seaweed salads, octopus salad, and teriyaki chicken udon.

The amount we got was disappointing to say the least. The seaweed salad was small, three thinly sliced octopus in the salad. The specialty rolls were about the size of a regular California roll.

The teriyaki chicken was bland; the chicken was over cooked and dry. You had to put your own spicy sauce onto the spicy sashimi, which was a fairly small amount of fish for the price paid.

They didn't include chopsticks or soy sauce in the take out order.

Maybe we have it better in Vancouver in terms of sushi, because I cannot see why this place has so many good reviews.

A bit on the pricey side, but quality ingredients, matte black utensils and a creative variety of maki sushi convinces me to rate this commendable restaurant an easy five stars.
