Mizen Construction

Ciaran and Mark's team has helped me complete two projects in the last few years. One was a complete rebuild of a Victoria home in SF; the other is a remodel in East Bay. We are very satisfied with both projects. In fact, my neighbors on the same block have selected them for similar projects right after ours. Here are the 3 key areas we have chosen them twice and will do so in the future.

1). High quality with reasonable price - Mark can solve all technical problems while Ciaran is very detail-oriented. They make sure their employees and subcontractors deliver high-quality finishes from the alignment of the tiles to the cut of the wood trims and beautiful paint job. They do it with a reasonable price discussed before signing the contract.

2). Excellent time management and communication - a rough project timeline is given during the signing of the contract. Spencer manages the project timeline well and keeps us informed about the schedule. In addition, if we ever have questions, he always answers within a day via text, call, or email. Great customer service!

3). A sense of respect and high level of integrity - when Mizen decides to take on a project, the whole team treats the project as though it is their property. They clean up at the end of the day, are respectful of the surrounding neighbors, and protect existing appliances or furnishing. You don't need to worry about neighbor complaints.

Nothing but good things to say about Mizen. Ciaran is everything you are looking for in a general contractor: experienced, detail oriented, knowledgeable, and has excellent communication. He had consulted me on a current project providing me valuable advice and made me aware of things I should pay close attention to. The photos of their builds speak for themselves and I would not hesitate to reach out to Mizen for future projects!

I am completely thrilled with my outstanding bathroom remodel job that Mizen Construction just finished! The gorgeous result looks and functions even better than I had hoped (how often does that happen in life and especially in remodelling?), the process was smooth and surprisingly painless, and it all came in on budget, too!

The company owners, Ciaran and Mark, met with me first to assess the project & work out the construction plan. I was impressed with their knowledge and ability to translate into action my bathroom dreams, both practical and aesthetic.

The crew set up the work area carefully before the job started to ensure a minimum of dust and traffic to the rest of my place, and cleaned up just as carefully as the job progressed. Mizen's workers were all very thoughtful, nice and professional. They even socially-distanced, wearing masks when inside my house.

Mizen demonstrated their high standards and quality approach from beginning to end - what a rare and lovely feeling to have such confidence in your contractor, and then see it borne out in fantastic results!

Wow, the Mizen team is fantastic! After receiving a referral from a friend, I hired Mizen to remodel my 1950s bathroom. And boy, what a transformation!! This team is kind, respectful and responsive. As a woman, I felt safe and considered. The team went above and beyond to make sure the results were to my liking, even installing additional hardware and making touch ups over the course of the project. They were clean, timely and focused. I often felt like I was their priority client even though they had several other jobs, which is a special art. Check out the before and after photos. My friends and family can't get over the transformation and QUALITY of this project. Heated floors, gorgeous tile work, clean cut. Worth. Every. Penny.

Mizen.Construction did a project for us on the front steps of our Victorian and we couldn't have been more pleased with the experience.

We needed to replace and repaint some areas of the stairs that were impacted by rot. Upon meeting Ciaran and Mark, I was immediately impressed. They took a thorough look at the area and discussed different approaches and options. They quickly put together a clear, competitive bid. We chose to go with them based on their professionalism and communication, and in the end we knew we'd made the right choice.

Each person we met on the crew was timely, friendly, courteous, and neat in their work. Really nice people to be around (which makes a difference when people are working on your home). Katie the office manager kept up communication throughout the process. Mizen.Construction completed our project exactly as expected, in the timeframe they planned, and on budget. Ciaran was very focused on quality and had the crew touch up a few minor things (that I hadn't even noticed) before he called it done. Our overall expectations were truly exceeded by this team.

I've worked with a lot of contractors on various remodeling / home repair projects over the last few years and Ciaran and Mark from Mizen are some of the best I've met.

After our wood front stairs started to rot and crack (they were poorly built originally), we needed them to be repaired or replaced. We also needed them waterproofed (they had been a source of leaks in to our basement) and so we wanted them replaced with stone steps. I got many bids from contractors and almost all of them wanted to completely tear down the steps and rebuild from scratch, which would've cost a TON of money and required tons of paperwork and time. Ciaran and Mark, however, immediately said that it would be crazy to replace the entire steps when most of the framing and siding was still good. They proposed simply ripping out all of the rotted treads, supports, and siding and replacing it with new, then rebuilding the handrails from scratch (they were rotting as well and not up to code) and, finally, laying down stone on top of that.

Their bid came in at a totally reasonable price. I asked for references and contacted all 4 that they provided. All had incredibly positive things to say about them so I pulled the trigger. The very next day Ciaran got everything in order (permits, etc) so they could get started the following Monday. The promptness was very impressive. Throughout the project, they were on top of every issue that came up and were at the job site checking on the progress every day. Communication was a breeze as they were always quick to respond to my questions. In addition, when I asked them to do some additional work (we decided to replace the front door at the same time) they were able to add on the extra work at a price that was more than fair.

An awesome experience from start to finish. I was truly impressed with the quality of the work and we absolutely love our new front steps. Without question, we'll be using these guys for all of our general contracting needs going forward.

My wife and I hired Mizen to do a lower level build out/garage conversion and we are thrilled with the results. We started the process in typical fashion interviewing multiple contractors and collecting references etc. From the very start Mizen stood out from the rest, knowing that they did an exceptional job with our friend's home put us at ease with the quality of work that we could expect, but we wanted to do our due diligence to ensure whomever we hired would be a solid and communicative partner throughout -- understanding that such a project can turn your world upside down for a significant amount of time. The entire Mizen crew is kind and courteous, which, if you're going to be a "good neighbor" this sometimes is forgotten, yet extremely important, when interviewing contractors. We never once had a compliant, and our neighbors enjoyed the interactions they had with them during the time they were working at our home. From the time we started working with Ciaran and his crew to conceptualize our raw space to putting the last coat of paint on the walls, the team's communication was consistent and collaborative. Every step of the way we were guided through budget conscious decisions while exploring potential areas to splurge. This honest and transparent approach resulted in an end result that's quite impressive--our friends and family have echoed this sentiment and have already asked for their info!

My wife and I hired Mizen Construction for a full remodel of our bathrooms and the whole experience went really well. Ciaran and Mark provided us with a competitive bid, a clear estimate, and a reasonable timeline. We found Mizen on Yelp, but we took bids from five different contractors (referrals and cold calls). Ciaran was the most professional contractor that we met with and more importantly, he gave us the most clarity on what was needed for the project. We already had a bathroom design in hand, but there were some early issues with it, and Ciaran and his crew were great about finding the best solutions while staying within our original budget.

The whole experience with Mizen was what we wanted, but the most impressive thing about Ciaran and Mark is that they hire really good people. You can see pictures and get follow-up references, but you're never really sure about subcontractors until you get into the mix. Mizen's own crew and all of the various subcontractors were friendly, creative and talented. There were no exceptions, they were all fantastic. They showed up when we expected and they kept everything clean and orderly. Everyone was focused on the smaller details, and whenever anything went wrong, there was never any question we'd find a really satisfying solution. All of that said, we were just really impressed with how Ciaran and Mark have found so many genuinely nice guys to work with.

We will definitely use Mizen for projects in the future and we will happily recommend them to friends and family around the city.

My wife and I worked with Mizen on a full-home renovation from Dec 2015 to May 2016. The project included structural changes, adding a bedroom and bathroom, and a partial seismic upgrade to the house. The project was led by Ciaran Maloney and Mark Lucy and involved a great crew.

We have tons of positive things to say about these guys. They did fantastic work on the house and provided great client service at a fair price. They worked quickly and efficiently to stick to both our timeline and budget. They also added some personal touches to the design by reclaiming original redwood from removed walls to create custom bench seating, which turned out very beautiful.

The communication was strong and, as other reviewers have said, we felt very comfortable trusting them throughout the project. They take a lot of pride in their work.

We would recommend them to our friends. More importantly, if we had to start all over, we would choose Mizen for our project again.

Mizen construction is great. Their work is quality, prices are right, owners are responsive, they stayed on schedule, and their employees are clean and do a great job. They built our deck, painted our house, and renovated our bathrooms. We could not be more pleased with the results.
