Have a little free time? Visit this fantastic, unique little museum. It's just a little hole in the wall in an alley and can only fit a handful of people at a time, but its contents are amazing. Each row of each of its three walls represents something relevant to history/current events/social issues. The visuals and text together make for moving, thought-provoking storytelling. Further detail on each object can be found in paper pamphlets by the entrance/exit. This was definitely one of my favorite stops on my most recent NY trip, and I look forward to see what the folks responsible for curating it do next!

Stumbled upon this place when I was walking to Au Cheval. It is in a little alley with no signs. At first I thought it was a pop up show but I asked and was told it was a free museum. Decided to stop by given the space was small. Had interesting artefacts of today's modern world (check out my pic of the homemade gas mask). Looking at pics from past reviews it looks like they change the artefacts regularly. Do check the opening hours before heading there. All up I was there for less than 10 minutes.

MMseumm is one of those remarkable museums that is tucked away in an alley, speaks to true political and social commentary, and so tastefully curated that leaves you moved, questioning how our society is constructed.

This museum is in an alley and is in a freight elevator (how New York does it get). You can explore this museum for about 30 minutes reading each of the displays. It's clearly a small space, so if there are multiple people, you'll have to wait, but when I went, it was just two of us who enjoyed it the entire time.

Definitely give a donation if you can in the box because you know that hosting this isn't free. I think this is definitely one of those museums that are worth visiting if you're in the area!

New York is remarkable for its sheer quantity of unexpected things in unexpected places; this museum located in a freight elevator shaft is the latest entry to that trend.

I've passed this museum almost daily for years, and peeked in the narrow windows at the exhibits; I was therefore able to be here for the current season's opening, on a rainy Friday evening. Cortlandt Alley was packed with museum-goers and gawkers, while a little girl in a tulle ballerina skirt stood up in a sub-compact convertible and yelled at the crowd.

Now I can plan to go on the weekends, when the doors of the museum are open--and the labels are therefore more readable; it is a celebration of the mundane and tragic. One exhibit on the top row details, for instance, unarmed immigrants gunned down by police--featuring Amadou Diallo, a street vendor struck by 41 bullets in the vestibule of his building when he arrived home. https://www.nytimes.com/1999/02/12/nyregion/portrait-of-slain-immigrant-big-dreams-and-a-big-heart.html?searchResultPosition=4

If you're in the neighborhood, check it out!

      Museum in an elevator!

Museums in general are always a sensory experience- visuals, colors, shapes, and sizes- along with real detailed information on multiple exhibits. This museums has all of that within a freight elevator! This museum is a cool experience!!! It's quick and you can learn a lot without covering a lot of ground. If you have 20-30 min to spare and you are in the area, it is worth a gander to check out this free museum!

Mmuseumm is an old freight elevator turned into a micro museum of found objects and miscellaneous strange things. I visited during "season 4" and saw a chronology of cornflakes, DNA-supported 3D printed faces of strangers, a series of objects pulled from people's stomachs, a chicken egg incubator, and much more. Yeah, this place is weird and great.

One note: if you're over 6 feet, be prepared to duck during your visit.

Limited hours. $5 suggested donation. Audio tour via your very own telephone.

Such a cool idea! The entire experience - finding the museum, standing in there (using a huge map) to find items, coming to know about stuff - makes for a particularly fun little adventure.
I removed one star because while the collection had one or two particularly exciting items (ISIS Money!), others truly felt like a waste of the very rare counter space (like the entire row about "cheap things") and the little card descriptions didn't make a good enough case about why we should care about them.

Visit! And take that friend of yours who finds strange stuff fascinating!

This place was awesome in all its quirkiness! Who wouldn't love a random museum in an elevator? There were way more things than I expected inside. Paying $5 to get the museum exhibit guide is definitely worth it and it's unfolds to be huge. So so interesting.
