      Promising.
New owners have taken over this establishment. They own Cornerstone, the american breakfast location in mid-town. So is New China switching to an american breakfast spot? No. The same owners have re-opened this location as a chinese restaurant. They are renovating the interior of this location and targeting March 2024 as their re-opening for dine-in. However, they are planning on serving chinese style (Hong Kong style) breakfast...what is this? You can wait for the grand opening or look online what are considered hong kong style breakfast items. And no it is not Dim Sum. Intrigued?

Anyways, they said they maintained the same cooks...but the prior owners wife was one of the main cooks. Hmmm. perhaps the same cook before the pandemic???

ok- did i try a few dishes anyways...yes i did. I decided to try a chinese american dish1) sweet and sour pork and a traditional chinese dish 2) chicken with gai-lon (chinese broccoli) in garlic sauce. drumroll...

      1) interesting. the pork had an off "flavor" . Either they fried the pork pieces in old oil or the pork was starting to turn. The sauce also had a stronger vinegar flavor and not as sweet as other restaurants. Although the dish looked fine - probably won't order this dish again.
      2) fresh gailon prepared perfectly. not over cooked and not under cooked. The chicken was also fresh/tender and had the proper amount of garlic and salt with a light garlic. sauce. a winner. would order this dish again.

Bottom line. potential with their non american chinese dish and the owners seem eager to establish an extended version of traditional chinese cuisine and still offer the basic chinese american dishes.

Reco: try their traditional chinese dishes- what are these dishes? if you can order it from bel-air/panda express...it is not traditional chinese food.. Will i return? yes.

Food is great! Prices are reasonable and service is cordial; it's one of our favorite Chinese cuisine restaurants in Sacramento.

I ordered the salt and pepper wings and the dried scallion fried rice. The salt and pepper wings looked delish when I first seen them. They had the perfect crunch to them so I was excited to try them (I've been looking for good salt and pepper wings). These wings were the most flavorless wings I've ever had. It tasted like I was eating fried grease. I took a bite out of all the wings to make sure I wasn't tripping and nope, to the trash they went along with the dried scallion fried rice. The presentation of the rice was awful. Barely any dried scallions and the egg whites weren't fully chopped up so there were chunks of egg whites throughout the rice.

I say this to say, don't allow the reviews to fool you. I was food fished

ok- i promised i would try this place again but dining inside versus takeout. In the past, their take out cuisine was hit and miss. I wanted to revisit this location after their grand opening to see if their dishes have
improved, remained the same, or got worse. The good news, they have an extended menu that is different from the prior owner that incorporates more traditional chinese cuisine. So what did we order.
      1) braised pig knuckles: my comparison for this dish is through Jade fountain. My expectations: tender pieces of pig trotters braised and slow cooked for hours. When our waitress said this is what she had for lunch and she enjoyed it, i was sold. Unfortunately, what we were served were inedible tough pieces of trotters. When i advised her this entree was inedible, she said the kitchen would make them tender- how? there is no way you can slow cook this entree to reach the perfect tenderness- perhaps through a pressure cooker! And that would still require at least another hour of cooking. We returned this dish and ordered instead...
      2) Chinese beef stew w/daikon radish: Again, this dish requires a slow braising process for hours to reach the ideal tenderness. What arrived were semi tender pieces but edible pieces of beef - but the beef tendons were perfectly tender. The flavor is a bit subtle but compared to their pig knuckles, this was far superior. And adding some red vinegar helped. Again using Jade Fountain as a measuring stick-Jade Fountain is definitely better.
      3) chicken w/gai lon: this dish was decent. the only suggestion would be less gravy because the gravy became goopy after a few minutes. This dish was ordered in the past and was extremely good - it was just so-so today.
      4) salted fish/chicken fried rice: just ok. it needed more salted fish and the rice was clumpy. Even Lucky Jade's version is better.

So here is my overall thoughts. the food here is average. the prices are definitely a bit higher than other local chinese restaurants like Jade Fountain, Macau Cafe, or Hong Kong Wok. But for an elevated price point, I wanted to experience better than average entrees. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I would probably patronize other chinese restaurants first. However, the wait staff was friendly and the ambience is definitely better here than other local chinese restaurants.

Would I return...perhaps as a third or fourth option. sorry. again, just my opinion.

Went here after reading latest reviews. We ate in as restaurant has very nice seating and atmosphere. Three of us had the sezchuan dinner. Came with hot n sour soup, cream filled puffs, egg rolls, pork fried rice, sezchuan prawns (very good), Mongolian beef and Kung Pao chicken. It was a very good and huge portion serving. My wife had beef with asparagus spicy with a brown sauce. It was one of the best I have ever tasted. Service was fantastic and friendly. I highly recommend this restaurant for fresh great Chinese food.

Decor was cute. Staff, very nice.
The food was just ok. A little irritated that white rice was extra and the crab wontons were 99% cream cheese. Not the traditional restaurant I was expecting

The "New" in New China is outstanding... The new owners have maintained the high quality tasty food that's always been a staple at New China, and have added their own flare.

The service is amazing & the atmosphere is very comfortable. The chef remains, making the best Wor Wonton soup this side of Hong Kong. Seriously, their Wor Wonton is a MUST order.

      Provecho!!!

Came in here for dinner with the family. Love the ambiance, reminds me of a typical honk Kong cafe. We ordered a few of our favorite Chinese dishes and everything was good. To my surprise the HK lemon tea is legit, we even got a refill. The waitress was on point and checked up on us a few times, even packed our leftovers.
Items we ordered: shredded chicken (1/2), Peking ribs, beef HK noodles, chicken corn soup, shrimp and pumpkin with salted egg, XO fried rice - all really good. We ordered the chicken and stings beans, this was our least favorite dish and won't be ordering this next time. It was salty and not cooked like how it typically is. Btw, these items are on another set of menu. Make sure you request for the other set of menus (Cantonese style)

New China Restaurant is under new management, a new chef, new Chinese menus, and new remodeling. They have a lot of traditional Chinese food available, and more items are being added soon.

The dining room is just newly renovated, and it is very comfortable. The services are fast and attentive. All the dishes we ordered tonight are delicious. I like the "NEW" New China Restaurant. I'm glad we have one more good choice added in Sacramento. I'll be here again soon!

We did takeout here last week. It has recently reopened and is in our neighborhood. We were impressed and pleased with everything we ordered. They honestly have the most balanced hot and sour soup we have had in the greater Sacramento area. The salt and pepper asparagus shrimp was another incredible highlight. Give them a try!
