    About the Business

Established in 1986. Phnom Penh House opened in 1986 when our family was given political asylum after surviving the Khmer Rouge torment in Cambodia. Seeking a fulfilling life and a promising start in our new country, each member of our family put what we had together and opened our first business, a Cambodian restaurant in Oakland Chinatown.

I really like the food at this restaurant. Its a cute little place with a nice clean bathroom. They are very gracious and friendly.

      Here are my favorites:
      Beef on a stick
Papaya salad from the appetizer section
      Stuffed chicken wings

The waitress is very entertaining and she remembered me. It's not a big place but big enough. There are at least 10 tables in there. don't worry about parking as there is a lot with meters behind the buildings.

Sadly, you can't judge a book by its cover. Phnom Pehn House was clean and bright. The tables were set and well spaced. We were greeted when we walked in. The menu has a lot of offerings.

The service was only so so. Although they brought water right away and took our order, they never came back to check if we needed anything once we were served and did not offer to refill our waters. There were only three other tables with patrons.

The lemonade was very good. It was homemade and had a slice of lemon in it. It was just sweet enough.

The food was very disappointing. The rice seemed like it had been cooked the day before and just warmed. We had the chicken curry. There were four drumsticks, eggplant, green beans and some potato chunks. The curry tasted like incense. When we asked what the spice was, they said they said it was turmeric root. We also had the traop Ang. The shrimp was old and tasted really fishy. It ruined the whole dish. Although there was lots of food for what we ordered, it wasn't all palatable.

Came here on a Friday evening for dinner and it was already a full house around 6p. If you are lucky, you can find a parking spot around the corner within the parking lot. We end up parking in the street.

Ordered ground pork with shrimp over eggplant, shrimp Pad Thai, stuffed chicken wings, fried calamari, and ground pork over fried fish.

Service always on point. They were very busy during dinner time so best to call for reservations if you have a big party.

Don't forget the fried banana with ice cream! It's the best after a good meal!

This was my first exposure to Cambodian food and it did not disappoint! We were quickly seated without a reservation on Monday night around 6pm. The inside was clean and service was quick and polite. Since it was all of our first times, we asked for some recommendations and the waitress was super helpful in walking us through the menu! We ended up ordering:
      - Crunchy green beans with tofu
      - A classic simple vegetable/tofu dish, but the sauce is what really elevates it!

      - Slaap Moarn Borg (boneless chicken wings stuffed with lemongrass, spices, bean thread, meat, mushroom, onion)
      - This seemed to be a very popular dish and I can see why! It's definitely unique - I've never seen anything like it before but the flavors were all really good and worked nicely together. I am a big fan of the bean thread noodles so having those in the chicken was a hit for me!

      - Cha Kathiw
      - The waitress described this as similar to a pad thai, but saucier, and I think that is accurate! We got it without peanuts due to allergies but flavor-wise it was very similar to pad thai.

      - Kary Tia (duck, potatoes, green beans, in a brown shrimp paste curry)
      - May have been my least favorite dish, but still very good and flavorful. I thought this duck curry was not anything super special, but I did enjoy it to switch up the flavor palette we had.

      - Sach Chhrouk Ann Kreun (pork charbroiled with lemongrass spices)
      - This was also a hit - reminded me of charbroiled pork I've had in vietnamese restaurants, which is always a favorite of mine. Again, nothing super extraordinary but definitely was yummy and would order again.

Overall, the food was all delicious, but would be interested in trying a few other different dishes if I come back. It was a bit expensive too, coming out to about ~$35 per person ordering 5 dishes for 4 people to share, but is a solid option when craving Cambodian food!

The service was good. The waiter was very nice, and the dishes came out quickly. We really liked the fried calamari, pad Thai, stuffed chicken wings, whole fish and eggplant with pork. The fried banana and ice cream were a nice way to end the delicious meal.

Food: Very very good. We liked everything that we ordered. Below are my detailed review of each dish we tried:

      319. SACHKOR ANG : Beef charbroiled on skewers served w/ pickled vegetable & house sauce. The beef chunks on these skewers were tender, juicy, and very flavorsome. Absolutely phenomenal and delicious. I'd get this again for sure. It was our absolute fave of all we ordered.

      534. MOARN ANG KREUN : Chicken charbroiled w/ lemongrass spice served w/ pickled vegetable in Cambodian style. This dish was also delicious, although I would think the flavor would be much more elevated if the chicken meat was a bit more charred.

      528. SLAAP MOARN BORG : Boneless chicken wings stuffed w/ lemongrass spice, bean thread, meat, black mushroom, onion & served w/ pickled cabbage & house sauce. This dish was so unique to me cause I would typically not order it, but I'm glad I did. This dish was perfect as an appetizer or as a main. The skin on the chicken was shiny and crispy, while the inside was hearty.

Service: I would say just standard and could be better (no offer for water refill), but at least the service was fast.

Ambiance: The restaurant looked awesome on the inside. I don't know much about Cambodian culture, so I don't know if what I saw was embodiment of that or not, but it looked nice. The restaurant was also clean and organized.

Parking: Could be a pain as we had to find street parking. $1 per hour on a weekday was not too bad.

If you're looking for authentic Cambodian food, this is just the place. The food here is excellent and all dishes were served family style, adding to the cozy vibe of the restaurant. The service is also excellent and everyone is super attentive and welcoming. This place is already a go to spot for me, and I will definitely be going back!

We came here for dinner on a Tuesday night. This is our second time dining here. We loved the food we got last time so we came back for more. The place is clean and the wait staff were friendly and attentive. We got seated right away with menus and water. I love that they have a good amount of vegetarian options.

We ordered the curry tofu w/ steamed rice and Singapore noodles. The curry tofu had galangal which I've never had before. It's such a unique flavor, it gives this dish a distinct taste. It was very good and would order again. We also ordered the Singapore noodles w/ shrimp. It was tasty, love the yellow curry, but the shrimp was overcooked. The food was good overall and would come back again to try other dishes. I love that it's just down the street from us. It's a little pricy, but the portions were very generous.

If you've never had Cambodian food, this place is legit.
