The building features great architecture with a beautiful dome and great light and space. Unfortunately several shops have closed, but the ones still there are striving to make things work and have great service with friendly and attentive staff. The security has been greatly improved and it feels safe and clean. We need to support the remaining shops and restaurants and hope that new amazing tenants and business move in soon!

Dropped by the other day and was disappointed in how SF's flagship mall has now come into disarray...
Numerous anchor tenants have left the mall, including Nordstrom and Century Theaters. Numerous parts of the mall were off limits including loos, entrances to the BART/MUNI.
Security presence was everywhere from mall security at each entrance of the mall. Almost every tenant inside the mall also had a private security guard as well...Helpful 6Thanks 1Love this 4Oh no 2Dec 29, 2013Previous reviewBeing the flagship mall of SF, Westfield San Francisco Center Union Square is a huge mall by the Powell BART station.
The mall is well kept and in great condition.
Parking is available on the street for ~$4/hr, roughly the same price as the garage.
There are numerous flagship stores, including Nordstrom and Bloomingdales!
On the concourse level, there's also a huge food court with a great selection of eateries! - Apr 26, 2024Updated review
Pathetically sad. Rapidly moving toward blight. Most of the stores have moved out. The remaining stores have lonely employees standing around as if in one of those abandoned Midwest shopping malls. Why would anyone come to this dump then spend over $150 on a pair of shorts at psycho kitty? The Adidas store is gone, so there's literally zero reason for me to ever come here again. Heading out I decide to walk through Bloomingdale's. Security teams guard the doors, and employees stand around and chat. Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., the employee to customer ratio is 200 to 1. There are more security guards in this store right now than there are customers.

Sep 22, 2023Previous reviewThis is a dying mall. It's been a dump for a while, but now it's worse. Don't waste your time, and by no means spend $20 to park at 5th and mission. There is literally zero reason to come to this mall anymore.
As evidence of how pathetic this mall is, check out my picture of the entire wall mural dedicated to hand sanitizing, and there are no hand sanitizers in the spot with all the arrows pointing toward them.Oct 25, 2022Previous reviewOne of the most poorly maintained shopping malls. An embarrassment to San Francisco. Filthy with scary unsanitary bathrooms. Absolutely filthy public bathrooms. Vagrants camped out in the mall. Filthy food court area.
Apr 27, 2018Previous reviewHeroin right outside the front door. This shopping center is a dangerous place. Police cannot defend it and security cannot protect it. There is absolutely no reason to come here with all of the sex places to shop.

With the closing of so many stores in SF, and with so many big anchor tenants leaving this downtown mall, I started thinking about the beautiful dome located at the top level of this mall.
This dome was constructed originally for The Emporium department store back in 1896, which closed in 1996. Then when the Westfield mall took over, it was incorporated into the new building. The dome is still gorgeous and modeled after the one in Paris.
I hope that whomever takes over this building keep this historic and beautiful art piece alive.Helpful 18Thanks 4Love this 21Oh no 1 - Aug 7, 2023

It's been a very long time since the last visit.. maybe 2010?..
Coming from my city that has one indoor and one outdoor mall ..is eye dropping..
The fun times of shopping in Sac and Roseville..
A lot of changes and very busy downtown..
I have never seen so many security guards walking and standing guard of some high end stores.
It was nice to see some different retail shops too.
More tourists from different countries happily browsing and shopping..
Glad I had time to visit..Helpful 37Thanks 3Love this 30Oh no 0 - Mar 18, 2023Updated review
Due to the pandemic, this mall has really gone downhill.
A lot of the eateries both upstairs and downstairs have closed. So, too, have the shops.
My favorite places such as the high end eateries upstairs and Ghirardelli ice cream shop and Williams and Sonoma and the specialty market have all closed down.
This place has become a ghost town and I'm not sure why anyone would come here anymore other than to go to the movie theatre or maybe Bloomingdale's.
Truly sad.Helpful 11Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 1Feb 13, 2014Previous reviewThis mall is one of my favorites in the Bay Area for multiple reasons.
I like the architecture.
I like the dome that lets light in at the top where there's also a seating area to chill and read a book.
I like that they have a Banana Republic, J Crew, and Lupicia Tea all in one place for me.
I like how they have special events going on. Or set-ups. This time the Chinese New Year set up is going on, so it was cool to read what the different animal traits mean.
I like how I can get here from the Bart or Muni.
I like how there's dining both up top and below, with the stores sandwiched in-between.
I like how they have a movie theatre here too.
So yes, you can see a theme here.
I like this mall. - Aug 19, 2023

Westfield plans to pull out of San Francisco, the company citing significant decreases in sales, foot traffic and occupancy level.
Nordstrom also closing both of its stores in downtown San Francisco.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Lauren L.San Jose, CA0189Jan 23, 2024
Mall isn't as lively as previous years. It's almost an inconvenience just to stop by here with the cost of parking, potential break-ins and access to and from public transportation, overall maintenance, and lack of products. You can tell by the surrounding areas including the once filled Union Square.
The City of SF and dare I say California fails to come up with better solutions and leaves its problem to fend for itself but that's a separate topic.
Very few selection left in the mall as many stores have left feels like a shell of its former self and had potential- but feels more as though it'll become a ghost mall. Which is a shame due to its location and interior spaces (gorgeous dome and spiral escalator.) Also I wasn't able to access the sky terrace earlier today (which is supposed to be one of the Priv-Pub Open Spaces.
However- saving grace is despite all of these- are the people- the workers (both retail/food/security) are -usually- very genuine, nice, and helpful. And the fact I use the entrance and exits to jump between Market and Mission.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Doug B.San Francisco, CA16222516Apr 28, 2024
Checked out the mall for the first time since a couple xmas's ago. There is a good amount of vacancies, and most of the patrons appeared to be tourists. You could easily tell that they were. We did buy some food at shake shack. The workers were very friendly. Most malls will need to re-imagine themselves as they can't sell the things you can get online. Some malls have kpop / japan type stores or other types of stores that sell some items not readily available online.

Its a nice sized mall. One of my favorites to visit in sf due to the connection of Bart on the food court level. This makes it a fun stop to grab a bite in the food court, before venturing onto Bart.
Recently visiting here, the mall security has been posted at the food court checking "covid papers" which to me seems a mute point, when there are transients in the mall actively spitting on people while walking by. So thats a problem, saw nothing done even as the lady who was spat on complained.
Many of the hallmark shops are still present, but noticed many of the smaller shops that I remembered were for lease and closed down, due to a year of being closed.
Overall, I enjoy visiting this mall when making a trip into the city with its wide variety of shops and restaurants.Helpful 40Thanks 0Love this 31Oh no 0
