Spacious and clean. Trendy and upbeat. Great place to host a party. We had my daughter's bday here. Food quality was very high. Based on these alone I would give a four star rating.
The factor that boosted the rating to five star? For me was the fact that when the bill came, I noticed that the tip suggestions were percentages based on the subtotal. Not the grand total (which includes the taxes). Secondly it was calculated correctly!!
WAY TO GO Sumo Grill for not being part of the tip-nation generation!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 19, 2024
I came here with some of my extended family (we were a group of 8) and the service was top notch. The servers were very attentive, helping explain the menu (including doing some Cantonese translation for my grandma), keeping an eye on the heat of the tabletop grill, and clearing empty dishes as soon as possible. Seriously, kudos to them because large family gatherings can be a bit chaotic.
Most of my relatives opted for the lunch set, which includes a choice of appetizer and entree. A drink can be added for $1 more. Regular options for the set are limited, but there are plenty of add-ons (e.g. you can have a wagyu beef chirashi bowl, but it'll cost you an extra $25). All sets come with miso soup and a side salad. Regardless of what you get, it's a lot of food. I'd say you get what you pay for. Taste was pretty good. I sampled a bit and enjoyed everything, but at the same time I've had better versions of these dishes (takoyaki, chicken karaage, beef bibimbap, etc.) elsewhere.
My mom and I split a meat platter because we wanted the bbq experience. It came with rice, side salad, miso soup, karaage, and banchan. Again, a lot of food! You get your money's worth. The meats were tender and juicy, though all credit goes to my mom for the grill mastery. I'd order this again, as long as we had more people to share with (did I mention there's a lot of food?!).
Sumo Grill looks unassuming on the outside, but when you step in the vibe is definitely more upscale. It's different from a lot of the other establishments in the Joyce-Collingwood area, which has its pros and cons. From a dining experience angle though, everything was good. My family left happy.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dec 19, 2023

We just discovered a new hidden gem of Joyce-Collingwood - SUMO Grill 相撲! Initially thinking it was just a BBQ place, we were thrilled to find a diverse lunch set starting at $19.95, giving us the creative freedom to create our meal. A main course, a small dish, and a refreshing drink - talk about a customizable feast!
The food was an absolute delight - not just good, but a burst of freshness and flavour. The top picks are Aburi Salmon Donburi, Wagyu Beef Chirashi Donburi, and Wagyu Beef Oshi. Fresh, flavorful, and worth every penny!
We got the two drinks - Thunder Dream Mango and Summer Passionfruit - not too sweet, just perfect. We can't wait to go back for more!
For those who remember the days of Honolulu Cafe, rejoice! There's a new kid on the block, and it's none other than SUMO Grill 相撲 on Kingsway.
Food: 5/5 Must Try!
Service: 5/5
Kids: 4/5 Yay! (They have children's plates and utensils available.)

Huge place looks like it can accomodate almost a hundred clients.
Dark brown and black table and chairs accentuated with simple Japanese decors.
Opens 11am to 3 pm then 5pm till about 10.Both time slots they serves bbq but looks like it is famous diring dinner time.
Very friendly service, not so busy when I came but its getting there.
Walk in and reservations for large group is welcome.
Serves alcoholic beverages
Foods: I ordered the Chirashi donburi and I luv it,fresh tuna amd salmon topping the Japanese rice,it comes with green salad and a miso soup:
Then I also got a 2 pcs chicken Karrage.I enjoyed both dishes, fresh and really delish.
Ambiance:Japanese Korean atmosphere, casual to hippie can be romantic as well.
Service 4-5 star
Market Value: A bit pricey but worth
Accept cash, card and debit, good for group and also kids.
Noise level is average.
Washroom is immaculately clean, smells awesome aswell.
I highly recommend this place specially for locals who loves Japanese cuisines and Korean style resto.

Friendly and knowledgable staff, they showed us how to use the menu for our first time. The interior was very nice, you can tell this place is more high end than the other restaurants around. The sauces for the bbq meats were super yummy and different. The meat quality here is super good, great marbling on the beef. Bulgogi don was one of my favourites. They also gave small plates of pickled veggies to help cut the grease of the bbq. The only thing is that the menu is quite small, but this place is still relatively new so I'm sure there will be more items added as time goes by.

Small restaurant with Japanese cuisine. Loved their decoration and their menu. The dinner option A was enough for one person. I was so hungry that I ordered deep fried tuna roll and takoyaki.
Well .... At least I had something to bring home... leftovers... Lol loved their sashimi, and this is one of the only restaurant that they didn't put fake paper grass as decoration! That was one thing that made me happy! lol food was so yummy... loved it!!!
Their service was amazing, all the waitress were so friendly and efficient. They helped me a lot with my order and that was a plus!!!
Well hopefully you had a great experience like I did!

This replacement to the Honolulu Cafe just soft opened August 15. It has transformed itself into a higher end BBQ place, similar to Alley 16 on Cambie and 16th.
We ordered the Combo Meat Platter for 2 for 138. It was a fair price considering there was A5 Wagyu (5 kinds). The set came with side plates and a huge bowl of various sashimi on rice. Wow there was a lot there! Everything was good.
Other than the Wagyu there was also pork belly and chicken. The quality was amazing, just a little sear on each side and there's your buttery slice of Wagyu.
The service was also very attentive. Congratulations on your opening we will come back!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1 - Dave C.Chula Vista, CA227418Jun 11, 2024
The food was exceptional and I'm not sure how they get a 3.9 rating. The lunch combo was great and with it for $19.95. The service was great and the place was cozy. Restrooms were very clean. Only challenge, which isn't their fault, is the parking. Limited spaces and small stalls.

The boneless prime rib platter was pretty good. I would skip the wagyu Gyoza and chicken karaage.
Service was good, I noticed there were enough servers working . I appreciate that they didn't rush us out after we were done eating and continued to refill our teas while we were chatting.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
