We came back after all the rave about their new udon menu and how you can upgrade it to XXL noodls for free.
I got the mentaiko udon with extra mentaiko and with XXL noodles. I was prepared to be able to take some home. Wow... it was super dissapointing. It felt like 1.5 pack of udon which makes me wonder is regular just a half pack of udon?? I was able to finish it all myself without taking any home. The mentaiko did not look double compared to all the foodies I follow. Perhaps they skimp out on regular customers. The taste was very mild. Mentaiko should taste sharper.
The chicken karaage was ok. Small portions but the sauce was tasty.
Previously I was really impressed with their tempura and the rice but this time although the tempura was still good, the rice was not the "individual grains with perfect texture" as it was before. Pretty dissappointed to what it has become now.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Aug 30, 2022Previous reviewWas at their opening with BOGO 50% off. I stood there watching the tables be cleaned and stayed empty for 10-15 min before they let the next person in. I'm not sure why but I have a feeling their cooks can't cook fast enough if they were at full capacity. There were at least 3 tables empty before they let one couple in.
We got the anago and kohaku tendon, with a chicken wings appy.
Chicken wings - comes spicy or not and the non spicy the waitress said is just the tendon sauce already provided at the tables. We opted for the spicy with sauce on the side since I can't take too spicy. The chickens were very juicy but not very crispy. Not really worth $12.45 for 4 full wings.
Tendons - each comes with miso soup. The miso soup was less than half the bowl provided. It was good though. The rice was cooked perfectly. You can taste the individual grains with the perfect texture. The tempura were also hot and fresh. They provide you with a smaller bowl to place the tempura on so it doesn't get soggy on the rice. The eel was gigantic and was well worth the couple dollars more from the 2nd largest one. The chicken breast was very moist. Everything else was fried well and the food was al dente. The soft fried egg was the most lackluster. Maybe because it was so hyped up. It was just an onsen egg with the outer layer deep fried. It doesn't have a tempura coating and you can't just bite into it so it just becomes like a regular onsen egg that you break into your rice.
Overall, they make tempura and rice really good but other than that we didn't enjoy the appy. - 414113190Jan 5, 2024Updated review3 check-ins
Love this place so much. Their tempura batter is so crispy and I havn't found any other place where I can get a deep fried runny egg. We got to see the robot in action this time too!Â
No need to go to Japan for crispy tendon dishes when you get it right here at Tendon Kohaku.
We actually just got back from a 3 week trip to Japan. During those 3 weeks we only managed to try one tendon restaurant and unfortunately it wasn't good at all. It was the worst tendon we've ever had. I think we chose a bad spot. Maybe too much of tourist location. The tempura was soooo soggy and the service was horrible. I'm sure there are incredible tendon restaurants in Japan but we just happened to pick a really bad one.
So happy that we have Tendon Kohaku here in Burnaby. Good to know of a place right here in our back yard where we can get excellent tendon, since it'll be awhile before we can make it to Japan again!

At Tendon Kohaku there are a variety of options ranging from seafood tempura to vegetable tempura. My husband and I had tried the Brentwood location of Tendon Kohaku when it first opened and they were having a BOGO offer. A bit too heavy on the rice was the impression we walked away with.
Another location of Tendon Kohaku opened up at Station Square and it's been open for over a year now. We decided to give this location a try. Featured here:

This time we were thoroughly impressed! The tempura was so golden and crisp. I loved how the batter wasn't excessively greasy; the ratio of tempura to rice was much more balanced. While there was a bottle of tendon sauce on the table for us to add to our bowls if desired, I found the amount of tendon sauce that my dish came with was sufficient on its own. I added a deep fried runny egg to my Vegetable Tendon and wanted to squeal with delight when I burst open the egg and saw how runny the yolk was!
They have dishes that come with Udon too if you prefer noodles over rice, along with a decent selection of appetizers and side dishes if you feel like putting a few items that aren't deep fried onto the table.
I love how they have deep fried options to suit omnivores, pescatarians, vegetarians and even vegans. As a Pescatarian, I tend to feel a bit left out when someone in the family has a craving for fried food and then ends up bringing home fried chicken to satisfy that craving. I was so happy to be able to order my Vegetable Tendon and the deep fried runny egg was the "cherry on top"!

Was not expecting to find a delicious tempura / udon spot near a bustling Vancouver mall. The interior was spacious and bright and they have a cute robot collecting the used dishes and cups. For my meal, I ordered the classic option which included tempura prawns and veggies. Batter was light and not overly greasy and the sauce that was on the rice was delectable! Would love to try their carbonara udon another time.

The decor in the restaurant is very nice, when you walked into it, almost feel a zen like atmosphere. Great lighting & decor. There's even a display of rice grains!
Service was good, menu actually has instruction on how to eat the Tendon. The food was good just beware that it comes with little protein, I think I only had one piece of chicken, their add on was very reasonable. Add on miso soup was only 85 cents & the miso was very tasty & they didn't skim on the miso paste either.
Do check them out!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - 564233Mar 8, 2024
I had the sashimi aimori tendon and it was delicious. Chose spicy which was medium spicy and just right. Prices reasonable for the amount of food. Added unlimited miso soup & cabbage salad for a small extra price. Clean restaurant, brightly lit with good servers.

If you're in the mood for a no-frills tasty tempura spot, this is the place! I ordered the spicy version of the Classic Tendon which included an assortment of shrimp, yam, green bean and mushroom along with rice and their special sauce. "Spicy" is not really spicy--you just get an enhanced red pepper flavor. Appreciated how clean the flavors of the dish were-it seemed to me that they used high quality oil and fresh ingredients.
Service was friendly and speedy. The ambiance was very simple and clean-very consistent with the type of food and vibe they are going for. Pricing was reasonable as well. Recommend!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 882180Sep 20, 2023
I tried their zenbu mazsoba and kokoro ramen along with their takoyaki! The mazesoba is always a go-to for me but I loved the creamy ramen broth as well!

This is a super belated post from @kohakutendonvancouver, as I went when it first opened! The wait was around 2 hours without reso so I'm sure it's much less busier now! This is at the Brentwood location :)
I loved the interior design-- modern and chic. We love a clean and spacious restaurant !!
In terms of food, the rice was a little too soggy for my preference. The soy sauce was not evenly dispersed so that also played an impact on how the overall bowl tasted.
The tempura batter was quite heavy, but I enjoyed the sashimi! This combo blended quite nicely and lessened the heaviness of the entire meal. The bowls looked small, but we were super full from it!
The drinks were the highlight IMO. Or maybe I just needed something sweet that day :)
Overall, it was not bad, but I just had higher expectations from the hype it received when it first opened. I have been looking for an opportunity to come back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 13, 2022
Not what my family was expecting when coming here. This was basically a tempurarice bowl / udon soup restaurant which I was not really in the mood for when coming here. In order circumstances sure, I would probably be more down for it, but I wasn't that day.
While everyone else chose the tempura bowls with either rice or udon, I just went with whatever they had that was close to at least a chirashi bowl which was their Kaisen Don. It was a fairly reasonable meal that I ended up scarfing down super quick. I was done before anyone else got started at my table. It was pretty good. But I think I'll try the tempura bowls next time since they're known for that.
Service was good, friendly, and helpful. Atmosphere definitely has the Japanese culture vibe going with the wood blocky decor and all.
I definitely should give this another try next time. Maybe I'll appreciate the food more once I try out their tempura.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 22, 2022
Been here twice in 2 weeks now. Been meaning to try this place out since I've seen the photos on insta. But just never really got to it until now since I rarely hang out in Burnaby or Downtown. Been pretty pleased with the food so far. I like ordering their Sashimi Aimori Tendon with the spicy sauce on the side.
Other than their fried chicken being either overly rubbery or once raw, I like the rest of it. And that time I had raw chicken the server was really nice and comp'd my dessert.
I like their miso soup. Their chawamushi was so-so. Cheesecake was decent.
I want to try their Hokkaido milk tea the next time I'm here.
SN: 2nd time I came here, the lavs were abysmal.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
