About the Business
The American is a sports bar and off-sales shop located on Main street. We are untraditional in the sense that we don't have servers. When ready to order customers approach the bar. It is an open concept communal atmosphere with two bars, one located in the front and one located in the back. There are large tables, for big groups and small booths suitable for children. Did we mention we are kid friendly until 10:00pm? We have pinball, skeeball, pool, foosball, basketball and football with more arcade games to come. The bar carries a variety of craft beer and cocktails. As of September 2019 Down Low Burgers has been operating The American kitchen. If you like burgers this is the one to try. " ' Smashing a burger reduces how much the meat is touched, plus we season our meat to order, preserving that flavour and texture as much as possible! [We] are proud to use exclusively local, hormone free, GMO free, grass raised beef that has been aged for a minimum of 40 days by our friends Two Rivers Meats. In North Vancouver. [Our] buns come from baker extraordinaire Livia Sweets located on Commercial drive. Everything else is made in house other than the ketchup. . . Heinz does too good a job and if it ain't broke. . . Planning a special event, we do staff parties, wrap parties, holiday functions, birthdays and more, with a number of catering options available.

Great food and drinks with an exciting ambiance. The arcade games spread throughout the venue made our experience fun, the staff were friendly, and our stay was great overall.

No! Just no! There is so much mouse poop everywhere, including downstairs where the kitchen is. Read their health department reports. This is so unsanitary. You've been warned. Eat there at your own peril.

Came here for the first time and enjoyed it so much went back a day later.
No nonsense bar - strong beer list. Lots of gamers hanging out.
Good selection of new great condition Stern pinballs (7 if I recall).
Some other games like classic video console, basketball, football.
Reasonable prices, esp M-F happy hour.
Wine is very limited but well thought out.
The burger from DownLow is legit.
Double French onion smash burger with fries - super juicy (was a bit greasy), perfect portion of gooey Gruyère, caramel used onions.
Perhaps a bit too much salt on fries and burger - sauce for dipping is amazing.
One of the best burgers I've ever had and I've had a lot of good burgers.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dani N.Downtown Seattle, Seattle, WA01412Feb 23, 2024
Burgers are the truth. Absolutely a hit along with their seasoned fries. Service was quite slow on a Friday afternoon but would come back just for the food

This was a quirky little burger joint/arcade.
I found the burger and fries to be good and the prices were good. Service was a little spotty but this is a cool joint!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sepehr M.Coquitlam, Canada03Feb 5, 2024
Great atmosphere and genuinely the best burgers in all of Metro Vancouver. Service is just a little slow but the prices and vibes make up for that.

I know who the target audience for this place is and if you work downtown and want somewhere to drink and play pinball after work, this is the only game in town. Is the food over price? yes. Is the pinball overpriced? yes. Is the food better than fast food? Barely. I went here precovid and it was a lot better. I don't know how this is the same outfit as Downlow Chicken, but just go to Downlow for better food and if you can take the Skytrain to Sapperton there is a better pinball arcade and retro arcade.

I think it's unfair to only rate a bar by their food, which is not really their strength. Tbh, most bar food are just meh, you dont come here for gourmet food anyway.
Set food aside, this is a great bar for groups! They have large tables where your whole group of 10 or 20 can all sit in. There are several sections with fun games like pinball, skeeball, basketball, football machine, and pool table for your group to compete and have fun. Some times, the line gets super long, just take a beer and check other games out. When you come back maybe there's no one at it.
The drink selection is okay, more choice of beers than cocktails but you can always ask them for something off menu.
There are two bars on either side of the bar so you dont have to cross the ocean of ppl to get more drink.
Coat check closes before 9, which is a bit annoyed but you can hang it where you sit. Watch out it's hot inside.
Restroom are big and pretty clean for a bar, a plus point for a big crowded place like this.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sep 22, 2019
Not too busy between 6 and 7:30pm on a Friday night, though it was getting more rowdy by the time I left. FYI, you order at the bar.
I got The American - 4 stars. It was quite juicy, soft, and flavorful. I also tried a cider that was sharp. While the food was good, this place just wasn't really my scene (sports bar, a bit loud when crowded).Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
