My teen attended the summer camp and had fun with the other campers. We traveled from out of town and stayed in a hotel for the week as a special experience for her. One of the days my daughter stated that she kept asking for help and was ignored by the teachers for over an hour. I double checked the class to confirm it stated all levels of sewing experience and it does, to include beginners. While my child has experience sewing for 10+ years and previous sew camps, it is my expectation that if she asked for help, she would not be ignored. On the last day, my teen was unable to put the dress she had sewed on as they forget to include a zipper in the pattern. She stated that she mentioned multiple times that week, what about the zipper, and was ignored. She bought a zipper on their field trip and my understanding is it was the teacher's responsibility to help create a pattern (i.e. include a zipper).
My daughter's dress was ripped - she ended up crying before the fashion shoot as the straps were ripped as were the sides. A floor length dress made out of satin is impossible to put over your head, without a zipper. My daughter felt as if she was being gas lighted by one of the teachers when the other teacher realized the mistake as they tried to figure out how to get the dress on her, pin it with safety pins, etc. and the teacher blamed it on my child stating she never asked for a zipper.
My daughter didn't want me to reach out but I met the owner and thought she was nice and figured she had no clue what transpired and she would want to learn from this so the team could improve. I reached out the next week, left a voice mail and never received a call back. I specifically stated I wanted to speak to the owner, listed her name and shared my number and that I wanted to share some feedback from the teen camp.
What could have been an amazing experience ended really poorly with a bad taste. While my daughter had fun, she should have left with a dress that wasn't ripped and for $900 I would expect the teachers to make sure the dress was actually functionable and that the child would leave with a completed product that works. If the class states all levels, someone should have made sure this dress had a zipper and my child didn't leave with a dress ripped on both sides and the top. Very disappointing.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 2Business owner information

I want to thank you for sharing your thoughts about the program, but I'd like to clarify some aspects of the situation. The account of events provided is not entirely accurate. During your daughter's week at camp she displayed a lack of interest in every aspect of the camp, and this was evident through her actions. At times, she even went so far as to use FaceTime to chat with her friend during one of our guest speaker sessions. This situation required my intervention to end the call and offer apologies to our guest, who had generously taken time out of their busy schedule to be with us.
In stark contrast, the other campers actively engaged in the camp activities, completed their projects (including adding zippers where necessary), and demonstrated genuine enthusiasm for meeting our guest speakers. The work produced by our students, as seen in the photos, is a testament to the typical level of engagement and creativity we expect at our camp.
It's important to note that we cannot compel our students to complete their projects, and in this case, your daughter simply did not express an interest in finishing hers. Given that she joined the camp with a friend who was enthusiastic about participating, it raises questions about whether she genuinely wanted to be part of our Fashion Camp from the outset. - romeo c.ASTORIA, NY11725Oct 18, 2019

My daughter attended a day camp here recently, and had the most amazing experience! The space is large, bright, and clean. The teachers and staff are outgoing and friendly and really foster each child's creativity. Each child sewed their own shirt, made a mood board and designed a storefront.
She can't wait to return for another creative experience.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

We love it here. My daughter has done a few classes, and sewing camps. She's a kid who can read and understand sewing patterns because of this place! She loves sewing and for her to be able to take something from her imagination to make it a reality is incredible and it really is from everything she has gained from coming here. The studio is really cute too, and it's situated right in the garment district! It's a great experience for any kid who wants to try out sewing.

5 Stars for the studio, minus 2 for huge safety concerns with the building.
My little mini-me was so excited for the one day Fashion n Design camp she could hardly sleep the night before. Dropped her off a bit late (never take the 42nd street crosstown bus apparently its faster to walk) so we missed introductions and what not. The studio is on the 4th floor and the elevator was broken so be prepared to walk up lots of stairs. It seems that they may be the only occupants in the building and on the way up the stench of mildew was overwhelming. I began to worry about where I was leaving my 6 yo for the day, but I was relieved once we reached the studio. It was so cute! Everything was pink and frilly and with a runway in the middle of the room. There was a table with coffee, tea, and snacks. I wish I could've stayed to partake in the fun! When I picked her up she was ecstatic to show me her creations the blouse she was now wearing and her fashion accessories design. She also took me to the back room which was lined with cute purple sewing machines, she did warn me not to step in an area blocked off by a huge cardboard poster half open to cover a bucket collecting water from a leak in the ceiling in the middle of the room and BOOM the mildew smell now made perfect sense. There could be a serious mold problem here.
My mini me said it was the best day ever! She enjoyed it that much, sadly I cannot recommend to my friends unless they move the studio or rehab the building. It's falling apart and in desperate need of repair and there is no security or doorman in the lobby which is very unusual for a business in such a lucrative part of the city. I do hope these issues get resolved soon. Its a great business with a beautiful studio and We will gladly return in a year or so to see if the landlord made the appropriate repairs, but until then for the price of the day camp and my child's safety and well-being we will have to find another fashion outlet as the risks outweigh the benefits for me.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Katrina, The restaurant on the ground floor of our building suffered a fire recently - our studio (and the building itself) is un-damaged but the elevator is out of service for the time being. The landlord is currently working the renew and beautify our staircase (that was previously never used by clients) and is working to repair the restaurant (the source of the unpleasant smell in the lobby). Our studio is very clean and does not smell, the morning of your daughter's camp our AC was dripping because of condensation and has since been fixed, but as you described we placed a partition around the dripping. There is no mold issue whatsoever. Unfortunately our lease precludes us from moving out of the space at this time (the other tenants are still there too!) the stairwell and restaurant repairs will be completed over the next month and our elevator is expected to be in service this winter. I do hope you understand our recent stroke of bad luck, that myself and my team are doing everything in our power to make each camp, class and birthday an extra special experience and that you and your mini-me return soon!

This place is awesome! I visited The Fashion Class with my 9 year old niece who took a session there (she went to their afterschool program in Manhattan.)
The instructor definitely knew her stuff but was also really engaging and encouraging. I was impressed to hear that their instructors have graduated from NYC's best fashion design schools. The environment is like an airy, open studio art space and manages to be child friendly without feeling like a "kid place." It is adult friendly too with lots of seating and it isn't too noisy considering all the sewing machines...
This place seems to do a really good job at inspiring young ladies to be creative. I have really seen my niece develop confidence (and some serious design skills) through her training there which is REALLY cool.
I wish we had one of these where we live cause I would go!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kim N.New York, NY010Apr 9, 2016

First, the good:
They communicate with you very quickly and politely--whether by email or phone. Very "on-it." They are generous with returning deposits if you have to pull your kid out.
My daughter loved this program and was happy every day. So that is huge.
I did have some concerns with the staff never coming forward to introduce themselves on opening day, with petty squabblings among what appeared to be a large number of rude, fresh girls, and with a sense that they were not trying to built a supportive group atmosphere among the girls. It seemed like an every-girl-for-herself type of milieu. My daughter said that when there were these fights, the counselors were on their phones and wanted them to settle their issues among themselves. I loathe rude, fresh children and would have liked to see this discipline issue addressed more pointedly.
Also, having a group of girls ages 6-12 is too wide a span. They should be divided from 6-9 and 10-12.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Emily, I'm happy to hear your daughter was happy everyday! It's quite a compliment. I'm sorry to hear you felt the staff were not solving disputes. During lunch time we give the campers free time and play 'fashion' games; with different personalities disputes arise. We aim to provide a supportive environment for the girls, but given the creative nature of our camp we do not discipline the campers. We do talk to parents if we feel there is a need for discipline. Our camps have 12 children, mostly tween girls, who are creative and expressive individuals. I appreciate your feedback and thank you for spending part of your summer with The Fashion Class!

My daughter attended one of their school break camps for a day, and absolutely adored it. Their space is even better than it looks on their website, and it looks pretty amazing there! Their facilities, activities, and leaders are wonderful, and my daughter is begging to go back any time she can. She came home with a beautiful top she had made herself, and wore it with such pride. We already signed up for the next camp!

My best friend has 7 year old daughter that I signed up for a "Day Camp" on a Monday that she had off from school. I called the studio in advance to hear more about what they would be working on since Sarah is a bit shy around new people. (I wanted to make sure she wouldn't feel overwhelmed.) There seemed to be a good mix of group activities and projects they could do on their own. The sign up process was really easy online. I met up with them that night for dinner after the camp so I could hear all about it. Sarah really loved it. She said they worked on drawing fashion models, made necklaces and even used a sewing machine. They taught her how to use the machine and made a skirt that she was able to take home with her at the end of the day. I was so impressed! My favorite thing was how proud Sarah was to have made her own skirt. The camp really gave her a chance to try something new and creative. Overall really worth it.
