The Floor Store

We give T.J. Oakley and the Floor Store on Geary in SF our highest recommendation, and thanks. They have done 2 jobs for us in the past few months and it was the best work we've ever had done. First was to carpet our back stairs. TJ helped with picking out just the right carpet shade and durability we needed. The installers were neat, precise and finished in less than a day. The 2nd job, replacing the kitchen and breakfast room floor, was more complex due to several unforeseen problems. Mainly asbestos in the old linoleum floor and, because I was going through cancer treatments, we could not do a remediation and demolition. The Floor Store doesn't do floor over a floor installation, but TJ stayed with us the whole way helping to find a quality installer who could do the job correctly and without demolition. Kudos too to Viktor and Dimitri from Red Machine Flooring who did the most meticulous work with the limitations. The floor is beautiful, safe and gives a whole new look to our kitchen. TJ and the Floor Store went above and beyond in their customer care and quality of materials and workmanship. Thank you and you will be our only choice for any flooring needs in the future.

My overall experience with the Floor Store was very solid. I worked with TJ, who was very friendly and responsive throughout the process. I came in with an idea in mind for what I wanted for new flooring in our kitchen and bathroom, and he helped me fine-tune my ideas and pick out the right materials. Once the order was placed it arrived in about a week and a half. I worked with Try Tiles to get the flooring installed, and they commented on the quality of the materials. Ordering the materials and getting it installed only took about 2 weeks. Would recommend!

Our salesman, TJ, was very patient while we made up our minds on purchasing carpeting. The installers were efficient.
All in all a good experience.

Probably my last review was for this company, this time Rose helped me out. Great team, and company. She delivered her promises, and when one of their products did not work for us this time, she was gracious and understanding.

We worked with TJ and he was awesome. He saw what I was liking in store and actually recommended a higher quality option that was affordable because they stocked it! The runner install was great and it looks fabulous. We will definitely be back and can't recommend TJ highly enough!!

Rose provided outstanding customer service! We are ecstatic with our carpeted staircase and the 2 bonus area rugs we absolutely had no idea would be receiving!

Our consultant Rose was a joy to work with, answering our questions and providing guidance. We absolutely LOVE our new luxury vinyl flooring. It is truly beautiful on our stairs and in our bedroom. We had a challenging design issue at the heart of our recent kitchen reno--namely, finding new engineered wood planks that match the old softwood floor in the rest of our flat. (Replacing the whole floor wasn't an option.) Even though it was a small job, TJ embraced the challenge with gusto. He looked at pictures of our existing floor, showed us tons of options over email and in person, and ultimately matched the price on a product from a different store when we couldn't stand to buy it there because we liked him so much. The Floor Store is great, and TJ is amazing: patient, enthusiastic, communicative, generous with his time, and organized, with a great eye for design. 10/5 all around!

I'd consider giving them 4 stars for the pre-purchase experience and for the helpful ladies at the showroom (Rose and Diamond). Unfortunately, that was the only bright spot of my experience. A combination of defective materials and really, truly, abysmal customer service (I really should have read the 1-star reviews here first) led to my basic condo flooring replacement project turning into an ultra-stressful, 9+ month, $40k+ nightmare. Yes, $40k+ to replace the flooring in a small condo. I couldn't live with myself if I gave these guys more than 1 star, despite the showroom experience. I will always regret my decision to purchase from them.

Speaking of purchasing from them, I should mention that I didn't realize this until much later, but their prices (even after "sale" discounts) were consistently at least 20-30% higher than what buying direct through a contractor would have cost me. One of my installers burst into laughter when he heard how much I had paid. :(

After the first installation attempt, when I realized that something was wrong and I reported the issue, they mishandled my claim and ignored me when I tried to point it out, blaming everything on the installers I had used. The second time around (two additional installation attempts and several months and $$$$ later), with indisputable proof that the material was defective, they worked with the manufacturer to get a *partial* claim approved (2 additional months later and for only about 1/3rd of the defective material), but then they made a mistake that caused me to lose another $5k+. They told me that I would get a full and unconditional refund of the cost of the material, without mentioning that this was *actually* conditional upon me ordering another product from the same manufacturer. A month and countless unanswered customer service calls later, they finally revealed their mistake. By that point, it was too late for me to do anything about it, since I was running out of time and I had to make plans based on the incorrect information they had given me earlier (and even in writing). Unfortunately, after making me wait an additional "couple of days" (in actuality, well over a week), they informed me that "corporate" was unwilling to do anything about it.

I had never seen this level of indifference towards the customer's needs before. I felt completely taken advantage of.
