Gastown has become a hub for coffee connoisseurs and Timbertrain is the new kiddo on the block that you should swing by for a sip.
The interior is chiseled to Simcic Uhrich Architects' signature blueprint of thoughtful minimalist style. The stainless steel tops, the glass display case, matte-black coffee machines, intriguing communal tables framed by a backdrop of exposed brick-walls. Lights pour through the large windows and open up the space.
The coffee menu is very simple and kept to the traditional, classy coffee options - you won't see "Caramel Fran Latte" here. At the "Fast Bar" :Espresso, Macchiato, Cappucino, and Latte; and at the "Slow Bar", the Coffee and Tea. Why slow? Because the coffee here all Pour-over that takes 3-4mins to prepare; however in consideration of the morning pace of office workers around, drip coffee is available in the morning.
In terms of coffee, the four major beans featured here are: Guatemala Puerta Verde, Honduras Finca Gerard, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Aricha, and Kenya. What is interesting about Timbertrain is that they select and roast their beans in a roasting plant in Langley.
You can feel that the friendly trios who own and operate this joint have poured in a lot of love and soul into bringing their coffee philosophy to life.

Still our go to Vancouver Coffee Joint... love this place. The coffees are consistently amazing and the pasties fantastic. The chocolate marshmallow cookie concoction continues to my favorite. We look forward to coming to Timbertrain every time we are in Vancouver :)

My last visit... the before times. Well it's just as good, remarkable as it was when I fell for Timbertrain all those years ago.
Breve was smooth with fantastic texture. Whenever I'm in Vancouver I stop by at least once. It's got fantastic pastries and it's got a comfortable vibe. Whenever possible I opt for local joints I'm very rarely disappointed and this place won't disappoint you.Jul 4, 2014Previous reviewWowzer - Best Latte of the trip to Vancouver. I'm not used to one size lattes so I'm going to have two. I live to explore local coffee joints when I travel. I'm glad I didn't miss this one! If you are in Vancouver get your coffee on at Timber Train!

Service 1/5: Staff were so rude when trying to make light conversation. They proceeded to talk about us the whole time we were there so we decided to leave. I totally agree with the other reviews. The service is very distasteful and unprofessional.
Coffee: Latte is bland and mediocre 2/5. Pour over 4/5, tried the both columbia blends. They use a v8 immersion dripper that seems to enhance the flavor. I was curious so I asked the staff and they were curt and said they don't know the name of every device they use.
Overall, there are many wonderful coffee shops surrounding Vancouver with friendly staff and amazing coffee like Nemesis.
Would not return, service is not worth the coffee.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 11, 2024
I feel like Timbertrain is so underrated compared to nemesis coffee (imo). The ambiance is super nice, the coffee is great, and I personally love that it's more of a traditional coffee shop.
***What I ordered ~
**Pumpkin Spice Latte w/ Oat Milk (10/10) ~
This wasn't overly sweet or bitter. The oat milk gave it the perfect creaminess and everything just tasted to well together. I honestly like that you can really taste all the spices! Nothing gets hindered by the espresso or milk.
Overall,
I would definitely come back again! This coffee shop really matches the aesthetic of Gastown and it's so cozy! Also staff were really friendly too! Till my next trip back :')Helpful 7Thanks 1Love this 6Oh no 0 - Carlos H.Tampa, FLJan 5, 2024
The best coffee I had in all of Vancouver. Timbertrain is the real deal. The pour overs are excellent. I had a Colombia pour and it hit the spot like nowhere else did.
The staff was friendly once I was sitting and gave me some recommendations. The seating is really nice and unique and it has a nice vibe.
You'll need charge devices due to limited plugs so keep that in mind.
Fully recommend!Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jan 18, 2024
Loved this place! Simple decor, good coffee, and most importantly they know how to make a great matcha latte! Good vibes! We will be back!

The coffee at this trendy coffee shop is undeniably exceptional, earning a solid 5/5 rating. Each cup boasts rich flavors and a perfect balance that's sure to delight even the most discerning of coffee connoisseurs (as a roaster myself). However, the same cannot be said for the service. Unfortunately, the staff's (one particular man) attitude leaves much to be desired. From rude remarks to an overall lack of friendliness, the service experience detracts significantly from the otherwise enjoyable ambiance. It's a shame that such outstanding coffee is paired with such lackluster service. The manager was kind and apologetic. With a bit of improvement in the staff's demeanor and attitude, this coffee shop could easily become a top contender in the city's bustling coffee scene.

Staff were absolutely rude to us, making multiple comments about requesting an additional cup and going so far as to come around the bar and making another comment about how they are a small business. Then they proceeded to stare and smirk at our group. Would have been happy to pay for another cup. Horrible experience but great coffee.

Yum, can't go wrong with a simple Matcha latte! The barista was nice and let us order 20 minutes before the café closed!
Right by gas town so I was able to walk around with a nice hot latte.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 26, 2023
Went to this place one morning to grab a drink and some cookies. Unfortunately they were out of cold brew that day so opted for a matcha latte and an expresso tonic. Both drinks were good and came out relatively fast.
Also got some cookies to try! I got their earl grey, vegan rye, and chocolate walnut! Highly recommend the vegan rye cookie, can barely tell it's vegan. Best part was all the cookies came out warm!
Would definitely come here again to try more drinks!Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Daniel K.Concord, CA03Jun 17, 2024
I hate how I have to give this place a low review because the quality of the coffee was great.
The service I received was disappointing. The baristas had great technique but lacked heart. They were rude when asking questions about the coffee and lacked the knowledge with the product they sell. Overall good coffee but poor service.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
