I'm so glad that we have found this facility to take care of our classic cars. Although we don't have a huge collection, we have vehicles that have been sympathetically restored and we want to keep them as as original as possible. The staff at this shop has very experienced technicians that deal with a large variety of vehicles. Many shops in the East Bay don't have the depth of experience to work on classics. They diagnose the issue, summarize the repair in writing and repair it and give you tips without pushing additional work. The have been very accommodating to my family, and I will gladly continue to do business with them.

Overall a good shop with good communication. Transparent about what is going to be done. I acknowledge that I accepted the price updates along the way and paid the invoice while seeing the prices they were quoting.
In retrospect these prices are a little high. Was hoping this would be my go to shop for my Landcruiser but after having them do something fairly simple balloon up to over $1k the shop rate is just too much for me to return.
They replaced a seat belt buckle and spliced in a pig tail for the seat position sensor. Curious to see what the hourly is. To be honest though i'm more in the wrong than they are for letting them continue at the prices they were giving me.
At some point I should have just decided to do this myself or taken somewhere else due to cost.
To wrap up, they did a good job, had good, service and I cant really knock the quality or staff, its truly just a lot for what in the end was about 200 dollars in parts and taking a seat out/soldering some wiring. So assuming they spent 3 hours with the car soldering the connector plus seat belt would be like 300 an hour shop rate?Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Joe A.Alamo, CA9235203Jun 30, 2023Updated review

Joe,
Thank you for your business! We are trying to keep all of our employees working during these difficult times and appreciate you thinking of us.Apr 3, 2020Previous reviewNeeded a battery today, so glad top shop was open during the shelter in place.
Got me back on the road with a difficult install, repaired corrosion thanks again, you guys are the best!Aug 9, 2017Previous reviewHad a really tough time at another shop with my AC, thought it was a Freon recharge but no,,,
They told me it was the compressor, replaced that, still doesn't work, 100 deg every day with leather seats and I'm dying......
Brought it in to Top Shop at the recommendation of a friend and boy do I wish I had come here first, Rick only needed an hour before he was on the phone to me to say it was the, "low pressure switch.."
The what? "Yea its a five dollar part..." Q: Why didn't the other shop know that?
A: "They don't have diagnostic equipment to isolate an unknown problem.."
Classic case of you can pay now or pay later, I did both......Arhh
I have learned that you get what you pay for when it comes to the quality of parts and the knowledge of the tech diagnosing the problem, I will be a loyal Top Shop customer from now on!
Thanks, Rick...!! - Rick F.Oakland, CA0914Jul 26, 2023
My experience at Top Shop Auto was great. Frank and his team put a lot of effort into trying and helping me to get my 1939 Buick to use as a daily driver. This is a serious shop. They can diagnose and repair modern cars, but be creative with older cars since not all the parts are available and even some need to be rebuilt.
If you need work or help with your car, this friendly shop has the capacity to do just about anything with an appointment. Thank you Frank for helping me get my Buick on the road again!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Awesome and amazing customer service! I desperately needed new wiper blades on a rainy day and found Top Shop Auto with a quick online search. Called and talked to Kevin, who agreed to take me in without an appointment. I drove in, looked for Kevin, and he changed my blades on the spot. I received the "royal treatment" on a day when I was so stressed. It's rare to find a place where you are welcomed and taken care of so meticulously. Thank you so much! I can't say enough how impressed and grateful I am!

I took Frank to court over this issue. Unfortunately, the judge ruled in his favor. I did not catch it during the hearing but now realize Frank lied in his testimony. A large part of my contention is Top Shop installed a 2nd Cardine battery in my car after the initial one they recommended failed. During this process, Rick from Top Shop told me they are not recommending Cardone to other customers because the product has had too many problems. I presented to the court that Top Shop should not have installed a 2nd Cardone battery since they weren't using that line anymore. In court, the judge asked Frank is Top Shop still uses the Cardone hybrid battery currently - he replied they still do. This is a lie - Cardone has exited the hybrid battery business, their product is not even on the market. I did not catch this at the time and failed to bring this up. Good for Frank that he dodged a bullet by lying in court. Nice to see somebody with zero integrity get away with screwing the customer.

Darrell,
In light of your recent review up date, here is the link to the Cardone site with current line up of re manufactured batteries we install and the manufacture warranty they come with:
https://www.cardone.com/electrical/electric-powertrain/drive-motor-battery-pack/?sort=alphaasc&page=1
Again I am sorry that you are dis satisfied with Cardone's 3 year 36,000 Mile warranty that came with the Hybrid battery for your 2006 Prius . Many of our customers go with Cardone due to the Toyota batteries only having a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty.
See my previous response below:
I am sorry you are not satisfied with the warranty that came with the Prius battery you purchased. In 2018 Cardone was the only company re manufacturing Prius hybrid batteries at that time, the only other option was a new Toyota battery. The battery warranty is in bold print across the original estimate and invoice face, read to you, and agreed upon before any work was done.
Our workmanship quality has nothing to do with the warranty for the battery from Cardone. Top Shop Auto has very little mark up in the 2006 Prius hybrid battery installation - at $2600 Parts & Labor.
Looking at the other reviews you have left for businesses like ours, I see a trend in the degrading remarks - both in print and in person. The whole time you were at the shop you were yelling at our staff, even before we checked out your Prius- before you knew what the diagnosis was. You have gone to the California Bureau of Automotive Repair & California Small Claims Court -both reviewed your case against Top Shop Auto, and did not find in your favor.
FrankFeb 12, 2022Previous reviewTop Shop's quality of work is terrible and they knowingly use faulty products because they collect a higher margin on them. The owner, Frank Powell, has no integrity and puts his interests before those of the customer.
In March 2018, my original Prius hybrid battery failed after operating for over 200,000 miles. My regular service mechanic referred me to Top Shop to install a replacement. I was hoping to avoid paying $6K for a Toyota replacement and Top Shop's service advisor, Rick, said they could install a remanufactured Cardone hybrid battery for $2600. Rick said the battery wouldn't last 12 years/200K miles but I could expect 5-10 years still. Cardone provided a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty.
In January 2020 after 27,000 miles, the Cardone battery failed and I had to tow the car back to Top Shop. The piece of junk didn't even last 2 years. Rick was still the advisor and I brought the issue up to him. He was immediately anxious and eventually said they had so many problems with these Cardone batteries that they were not recommending them anymore. He also suggested that they didn't really know too much about the hybrid battery's performance because they were new products to them. Because the warranty was in effect, Top Shop could only replace with another Cardone battery unless I wanted to purchase a new product at my expense. Even though they acknowledged the problems with this product, they still put another one into my car. Plus, they charged me another $500 for labor to install.
In January 2022 (less than 2 more years and barely 20,000 miles), the 2nd Cardone battery degrades just like the first replacement. Obviously, they replaced a defective product with another bad battery. Top Shop quotes me $3,400 to install a 3rd replacement battery. I can't understand how they would think to charge me for a third battery after they installed 2 defective products. Even though they second battery was a completely different one from the first, Top Shop stated they would only honor the warranty from the original battery installation in 2018.
I have an abrasive call with Frank a few days later where he makes it clear to me how sleazy he is. He sticks to his position that the warranty fine print states that it's only in effect from the original installation. I try to make my case that the warranty should reset because the 2nd battery was a whole other new part, that he needs to accept responsibility for knowingly installing a bad product twice and honor the warranty for a 3rd replacement. Frank explicitly says to me that if he did right by every one of his customers, he would be bankrupt. I cannot believe this guy openly says that his priority is his own greed at the expense of customers' welfare. I'm floored that a business person would show no integrity. He even tried to shift the blame for the batteries failing by saying that I may not have driven the car enough miles - I spoke with Toyota, 10,000+ miles per year is plenty for hybrid batteries. What a weasel.
The irony is this personal post from Frank where he complains about buying a lemon from a truck dealer. He's on the other side of the problem here and goes on about how the dealer sold him a bad product and should have made things right for the customer. Amazing - what a hypocrite! - DuBose F.San Francisco, CA04Feb 19, 2024
Our 2013 Toyota Tundra stopped accelerating readily on the freeway, and the problem was diagnosed and addressed, to the tune of $3215, quite a chunk of money for us. We are quite happy that the truck can be driven safely again, but I'd like to have had some explanation of why these very expensive parts, air injection system pumps and valves, wore out given the light use the truck has had over its 10 years - whether driving habits played a role, or the parts have a life span of 10 years no matter how seldom the truck is driven, or perhaps rarely using the truck on the freeway is deleterious to these parts. My 20-year-old Chevrolet Suburban never had this problem, despite having been subjected to a similar combination of light use but heavy loads. Oh well, I can probably look that information up online somewhere. A minor complaint : usually when I pick up a vehicle in a shop, it is driven up out front, or at the least, when asked where to find it, I am pointed in the right direction. I had to hunt in the pouring rain because it was not in the section of the parking lot the check-out person had indicated with a vague gesture.

Quick repair of a wheel hub and bearing assembly on a 2016 Ram 1500. $572 out the door. Parts were priced as expected. Diagnostic was $180, and dropped to $90 after service. Labor was quite high at $271 for a 60-90 minute job. Between the high labor rate and not waiving diagnostics, this shop is not cheap.
First impression: Overall happy with the service. Shop seems very technically capable. I just moved to the area however, and I'll be continuing to hunt for a go-to shop that is more economical for the simple stuff.
Thanks for the quick service Top Shop.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - J. R.San Francisco, CA64087Oct 12, 2020
Brought my 1997 Toyota "80 Series" Landcruiser to Top Shop Auto to find out a nagging but typical oil leak from my vehicle
Upon my arrival, I was greeted cordially and met with "Cam". Cam would be conducting the inspection on my 1997 Land Cruiser.
After just an hour & a half, I was invited into the shop to do a walk around of my Land Cruiser with Cam and for him to show & explain to me what he had discovered.
Short and sweet, Cam explained areas of attention what is needed AND what isn't needed now as I had initially presumed.
Cam explained to me what he believes would need attention now and also explained to me other common problems often found on my vehicle with the amount of mileage and time for this particular Land Cruiser.
Cam was not only professional and knowledgeable, but personable as well. The entire staff up to include Jim and the owner were nothing more than nice and courteous.
I truly appreciated the hospitality and the service given to me. Just so folks know, I live in the Southbay and yet I drove up north to have my vehicle examined / serviced by Top Shop Auto of Lafayette.
I will see these guys again soon!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information
