Caroline L.Mountain View, CA022May 18, 2024Updated reviewMany years ago, medical clinics would ask for our social security number in order to get treated. Insurance companies also used it as a patient's identifier. It became illegal for clinics and insurance companies to request a social security number because many were leaked, hacked or even sold by medical clinics, and put their patients at risk of identity theft. Now the less ethical clinics are now demanding to scan your driver's license to keep it in their files in order to treat a patient. Driver's license information can be used to commit identity theft, so that's the same problem as with the social security number. Decent clinics ask to view the driver's license to confirm patients' identity but do not demand a copy of it. This clinic REFUSES TREATMENT if you don't agree to let them scan your driver's license!!! They DO NOT CARE if it is putting you at great financial risk as it was the case with social security numbers. This clinic is rude, unethical, and very disrespectful. Many other places will not ask to scan your driver's license. Do not encourage clinics that are either very clueless about how easily data is stolen at clinics, or they don't care, or they sell your data for profit. Be aware that clinics have to comply with HIIPA regulation, but driver's license information is not protected health information under HIIPA, therefore clinics can do whatever they want with it, that's why it's a very bad practice to give them this information, and ethical clinics that respect their patients do not ask for it. I refuse to deal with such unethical clinics, and if many of you do the same, they'd have no choice but to change their practice.

Oh no 0May 10, 2024Previous reviewIf you are OK with your driver's license information ending up on the internet, then you may be OK with this place. They require scanning your driver's license into their systems. Even Sutter Health and Stanford don't do that, they simply want to see it to confirm patients' identity. I asked the lady at the front desk who had access to that information, and it's pretty much everyone at the clinic, and some of the company's corporate employees. Nobody at the clinic had any idea of whether there was an electronic audit log to keep track of who accessed this information. Many people feel that their records are protected at medical organizations, because those organizations have to comply with HIIPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), but HIIPA covers health information, not driver's license. So they could sell that information, and even if they didn't, employees can (imagine administrative staff who are about to quit, a fast way to make extra cash is to sell that info to websites who re-sell it, and that's very easy to do).
As a general rule, an organization should NOT demand their clients' sensitive information unless there is an absolute need for the service they are rendering, or products they are selling. There is no need for driver's licenses in order to treat leg veins, or anything else (Stanford, Sutter Health and any medical, dental, optometry clinics I have been to do not ask for that),
The staff and physician did not understand the data sensitivity problem, they did not think that their practice was putting their patients at risk of ID theft (because they have zero knowledge or expertise in that area), nor did they care about ID theft not any other crime that can be perpetrated with such sensitive information.
Of course, I am going elsewhere for treatment. If all of us refuse to provide this information, companies like this one would have to review their data requirements and change them for something that is more ethical, and respectful towards the financial and legal security of their clients.
