It's Jan 2024, and Westlake Shopping Center is still in operation!
This 70+ year old shopping mall can be found packed with shoppers, as it offers several major anchors and other popular businesses.
Currently, anchor stores include:
- Safeway
- Home Depot
- Walgreens
- Burlington Coat Factory
- Ross
Others: Trader Joes, Sheng Kee Bakery, Target (small), Starbucks
Originally named " Westlake Town & Country Shopping Center," it opened in April 1951. It has gone thru many changes and renovations. I think that's why it has a somewhat irregular design and layout. My job often brings me into this area, as the mall is surrounded by apartment buildings. It also has a plaza that's loaded with small restaurants along Southgate Ave. My last visit to Westgate was on a Saturday evening. As I waited to turn from John Daly Blvd onto Westgate Center Rd, it looked like I was about to drive into a sea of cars. The main road thru the mall was adorned by a canopy of white lights.
Park in lots or multi-level parking complex.
It's a pretty large shopping center, and worth several visits.Helpful 18Thanks 1Love this 16Oh no 0 - Dyann M.Urban Honolulu, HI012Jul 12, 2024

Great place to hang out and shop. Stayed in downtown area and was looking for local restaurants and perspectives and found it there.

The West lake shopping area is the most nicest shopping area that I have been to!!!
And the one thing what... I like most about the Westlake shopping area is the Grocery Stores and Restaurants that they have!!!!
And it is very convenient when....I go grocery shopping either at Trader Joe or Safeway which is a good place to shop at when you need to buy items at any of this grocery stores!!! And there is a lot of restaurants to choose from as well when going to the West lake area!!!
If your here visiting from another foreign country or another US State... Try going to the Westlake Shopping area of DALY CITY CA USA it's fun place to shop at!!!Helpful 22Thanks 0Love this 20Oh no 1 - May 11, 2020
No matter how many times Westlake wants to renovate, close shops and open up useless stores that won't catch much attention from customers, it will still never be the same......
Throwback to the early 2000's when Westlake was literally a ghost town compared to how jam-packed it is today which is so frustrating haha...
Sanrio Store, a Photo Company store to take old school back drop photos, See's Candy, Starbucks was located where Chipotle is today, a lot has changed but for some reason is still A-OK.....
Honestly every time a store closes, they always add a useless store that I really don't find a lot of people getting a kick out of...What is saving Westlake right now would have to be Starbuck's, Safeway, and Trader Joes...possibly Nation's as well but that's it.
Finding parking here is horrible. People literally have honking fights over a parking spot.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Nancy M.San Francisco, CA1130Nov 10, 2023
surprisingly difficult to find any parking! we visited 3 different stores in different corners of the center, and each time the search for a spot took much too long - we suspect a lot of commuters park here all day - maybe the center can come up with some short-term spots near e.g. Safeway?

Westlake Shopping Center has gone through so much changes. I still remember when I first moved here back in 2001 when I was 10 years old. It still had See's Candy, Rice Bowl 88, and a big space in between that had just a circle railing and platform. Now, Westlake has become a haven for college students who lives in the Westlake Apartments surrounding it. Though it's outside mall layout is still as bizarre and confusing regardless of the changes.
The improvements Westlake has gone through have been tremendous. It has numerous stores for convenience and essentials, such as Safeway, Walgreens, and Home Depot. But what has been a big change are the restaurants that have been added. You have every cuisine right at your finger tips. You got American, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, boba places, Indian, Starbucks, you name it, it is here. You also have a good selection of clothing stores in Ross, Burlington, and DSW. Not to mention Banking with Wells Fargo (attached to Safeway), BofA, Patelco, and Chase. Also, a gym has opened, along with a new parking structure attached to Ross.
Although Westlake has gone through many great cosmetic changes, one thing it can't get rid of is the horrible parking. There simply isn't enough even with the parking garage added to it. Especially since Westlake Apartments added has renovated it's apartments and attracted more and more college students from SF state. It has become even more congested. When it gets busy here, the pile up is horrendous. The middle island which most of the stores and restaurant are has 3 entrances on the sides of it, and it just causes so much chaos and confusion for a lot of pedestrians and drivers. Not to mention the narrow pathway it has.
Westlake's only saving grace is that it's within walling distance of Daly City Bart station, and bus stops surround the area as well. If you don't want to deal with the parking, or can't drive, the public transportation are everywhere. Especially if you're a college student commuting to SF State or downtown at City College.
Look, Westlake has everything you could ask for as a resident nearby. It's great walking distance if you live nearby. Is it the best mall ever? Nope and nope, not really. Can the parking can be better? Sure. But the world is also over populated, so it is what it is.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Sep 7, 2018Updated review
The elevator has been out of service for over a month, I guess they are looking for a lawsuit from people with disability. Why it takes so long and no action is taken by Westlake Mall management, at least be courteous and provide an update on the expected repair time.
