Clara’s 3-star review:
A local Hunan family-oriented restaurant with good menu selection for spice lovers (specifically peppercorn spice)! A lot of their dishes are mildly addicting, so be careful as you might find it hard to put your chopsticks down! Because Hunan food is typically oily & spicy I would not recommend coming here and eating spicy food before a work day as you will most likely have an aggravated stomach the next day (not necessarily a bad thing though as the food is worth it).
[Items Tried]
*MUST TRY* Hot & Sour Rice Noodle - $8.95 (5/5)
Taste: Thinking back on this dish makes me salivate - the soup was the right balance of spice and vinegary sourness, the glass noodles were chewy, and the green onion and peanut garnish was just right. While a simple dish, I would definitely recommend ordering this.
Portion size: Meal size for 1 person.
Spicy Chicken with Chili Pepper - $15.95 (3/5)
Taste: The chicken was fried to crisp perfection and was spicy and flavourful as it was fried with an equal portion of peppercorn spice - however, at the end, it was difficult to find any chicken left since the peppers used in the dish hid them all away! The reason why I took two stars away was because I felt like the chicken lacked actual meat and I was eating chicken skin the entire time.
Portion Size: More peppers than chicken, sharing size only for 2 people as the portion is on the smaller size.
Boiled Fish in Sichuan Style Red Pepper Soup - $16.95 (4/5)
Taste: I love how this dish is served with bean sprouts and celery because I get to alternate between veggies and fish as I eat. The soup is hot, oily, and the right level of spice that keeps building as you continue eating. Despite how full I was at the end of this meal, I couldn't help but finish every bit of this dish as it was delicious. The reason why I took one star away was because I have had fresher fish at other restaurants at a similar price. I recommend eating this dish with rice to absorb all the oil.
Portion size: Sharing size for 2-3 people.
[Value for Money]
A reasonable price point for decent family style Hunan food. Would I come back? Probably, though this place isn't the best that I've had.
