Sebastian’s 4-star review: German food has become somewhat popular over the recent years outside of Deutschland. In the US, you'll now find Oktoberfest parties in every city, you can get a Pretzel year-round, and order a Hefeweizen (wheat beer) at certain burger joints (no kidding). The German in me wants to pull a face and rant about the stereotypes out there - although Oktoberfest originates from Munich, Bavaria is actually only a small part of the country. Outside of Bavaria, we laugh at people in Lederhosen, eat Pretzels only if a Doner Kebab is not around, and hate Bayern Munich. Okay, we do enjoy a Hefeweizen from time to time. My German and Dutch friends had some convincing to do but I left my skepticism at the door when I entered Suppenkueche. A German beer bar and restaurant in Hayes Valley? Let's give it a try. Interior - simple. Not too big of a place. Get here early or make a reservation. Something between restaurant and beer hall. It will get noisy. Ganz schoen. Drinks - Wein und Bier, das rat ich Dir. German beer from the bottle or draft, wine selection. If you had a craving for a specific Pilsner or Hefeweizen, this is your place. Food - Surprisingly good. Portion size decent, nicely arranged on the plate. Tried the Kartoffelsuppe (potato soup, $6.50), Linsensuppe mit Bratwurst (lentil soup with Bratwurst, $6.50), Nuernberger Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut ($14.50) and Rehmedaillons in Rotweinsauce (sauteed venison medaillons in red wine plum sauce, $20). The food was good and tasted almost like home. Almost, as home for me is what my mom cooks but this food comes close (Mom, if you read this, you're still the best, I love you). And: service was fast and friendly, including German natives. Overall, if you never had German food and want to get an idea of what these Germans eat at home, Suppenkueche delivers. And if you're German and you miss your mom, maybe this place can take away a little bit of Heimweh. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: Given the lack of Asian food options in Pacific Heights this place comes in handy. Thai Stick is both bar/lounge and a restaurant, so if you're craving Thai food and you're in the area, this place can be recommended. Good: - large lounge area, full bar, leather sofas, TV screens - affordable dishes (lunch special: soup and main dish for $10, main dish alone $8) - fast service Not so impressed: - food is average - portions are not overly big and rather basic But then again, for $8 you get an okay Thai dish. Beat that, especially in Pacific Heights. -
Sebastian’s 4-star review: It's early in the morning, you're drunk as hell and all of a sudden you get this craving for Mexican food (if ya know what I'm talking about give me a high five! ) Luckily, you're also in North Beach and until the first train goes back to the subs you have a couple of hours to kill. You could forsake yourself one more time to have chosen the subs over the city as a place to live (read: sleep) OR you could just forget about all of this, feel happy that Cinco De Mayo is knocking on the door and step into this Taqueria named Zorro. What you'll find are all your favorite Mexican dishes and literally more than you could possibly eat, even in this drunken state of mind. Go crazy with delicious fish tacos ($4), big fat burritos ($7), quesadillas ($3), cheese over nachos ($7) and a massive salsa bar. Food coma guaranteed. Oh, one more thing: there's enough space for you and your entourage. Come in and find out. -
Sebastian’s 5-star review: Yelp never fails! 5 stars for this Taqueria? All the way! My quesadilla was spot on (flavorful, not overcooked), my fish tacos well presented, lightly seasoned, and tasty, and my Pacifica, well, you can't go wrong with that. I paid about $13 all together which seems reasonable. Food is freshly prepared in front of you and brought to the table. Definitely one of the best Mexican places I've tried in the Bay Area so far! Oh, and I love the salsa they have on the table. Especially the red chili one... works on really every dish. I'll be back to make my way through the menu. Gooood stuff. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: I came here for The Damned show in June 2014. While the sound was okay and my ears were not ringing after the gig, I was a little disappointed with the venue. It's rather small which is great, but unless you're not in front of the stage you'll have pretty much limited view as two pillars are blocking the view to the stage. Also, the lighting was weird as even during the concert it was bright as daylight. Good location though - right on 11th between Folsom and Harrison, next to DNA Lounge, some more dive bars and cheap eateries. -
Sebastian’s 5-star review: Muttville is a fantastic organization to rescue senior dogs (older than 7 years) and provide them a shelter. The environment at Muttville is cage free and it's not hard to see that these dogs are in a much happier place here than they were before they got abandoned. Stop by at their location in the Mission on Saturday for open house. You can walk around and play with the doggies. If you're thinking of adopting a dog then this is your place! (and then tell me, who let the dawgs out?) -
Sebastian’s 5-star review: It's 9am, my senses still need to be awakened by some caffeine intake. A friendly leopard with a long tail opens the door to his cafe. Before even touching the menu he demands a slap on his (impressive!) ass. Okay, where were we? The setup is unique. I liked the occasional penis on the table, something to play with while you're waiting for the food. Ahmed stops by, makes sure you enjoy it, sits on your lap, or kisses your cheek, if he likes you. I gladly play along, it's an interactive brunch after all. A note for the unprepared: Ahmed's quite the character. He loves what he is doing. It's his restaurant, and he can be picky about the crowd. If you were never before NOT let into a brunch place, this could be your first time. Ahmed says goodbye with a kiss and and a bite into my ass. I have a little bruise now but that's just how I like it. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: I've been here for the Warpaint / Queens of the Stone Age show in April 2014. First timer! No, not for the stone rockers but for the venue. The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is a multipurpose arena, not so much a pure concert hall. And that's actually my main complaint. Sure, it fits 6000 people for a rock concert but it also fits 6000 people for anything else. The sound is kinda wobbly and gets lost in the wide auditorium. I didn't even have to use my earplugs - at a rock concert. That being said, there is an impressive light installation creating the craziest effects on stage, on the crowd, and on the video screen. You won't find that in smaller venues, but I prefer intimacy and a better sound over a crazy light show. Sure, I not gonna refuse to buy tickets for my favorite band next time just because they play at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium but I'll be prepared that I definitely do NOT need earplugs. -
Sebastian’s 4-star review: I'm by no means a wine critic. Nor an expert. When I was a kid, wine to me was the stuff the Frenchies drank to every meal, and it was something my mom would use occasionally for cooking. And it was also something you could get for EUR 2.99 at your neighborhood Lidl supermarket. Well, I'm a bit older now and ready to reconsider, or to learn. Etcetera seems to be the right place to do so. First thing you'll notice is the menu which lists the wine by country, followed by several pages with even more detail. Give me a bottle of Chardonnay, allow me some time to go through it, and I'll be an expert in no time. Look around the cozy bar, get comfortable on the leather seating, and you'll feel warm and welcomed. The staff is super friendly and although it gets pretty crowded on weekend nights they're very attentive and chatty. Don't forget about the food: Etcetera serves mid-European, French-inspired cuisine which was delicious and had the right portion size (I tried the cheese plate with meat, Flammkuchen, dessert). Oh, and yes, the dessert. Fantastic. This place might as well be a dessert-only place. Definitely will be back! Wine lesson #1 mastered. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: Stable Cafe is a good place for breakfast, brunch, and lunch. It's located near Folsom and 17th so a bit off the craziness on Mission. Maybe that explains why this place isn't too overly busy at times where you have to wait 30mins plus elsewhere to get a table. The menu offers a variety of healthy breakfast choices - from yogurt, oatmeal, to bagels and sandwiches that are mostly combinations of either panini or dark bread with egg, and cheese/bacon/veggies on the side. I tried the Pomba (toast, bacon, brie, egg in the hole, $7) and Nono (eggs, tomato, cheese, toast, $7). Both was good but the portion size not too large. I was actually still hungry afterwards. The coffee however was great - you can get French Press ($2.75) or regular coffee that was nicely bold and flavorful. Apart from the food, nice job on the interior (fellow Yelper Janice C. mentioned it used to be a police horse stall before?) - Stable Cafe is not too big but they made the most of the rather small interior. I'll be back here when I'm in the area! -
Sebastian’s 2-star review: I would have loved to give this Mexican fast food chain (they do have another location in Millbrae... wait... does that make it a chain?) a better rating but the food just wasn't great. The staff and service - super friendly and fast. Location - great, located on Polk and Sutter. The restaurant - spacious enough with lots of seating. Prices - inexpensive. The food - I had a quesadilla (cheese, without meat) that tasted blunt and boring, and two fish tacos that were small and flavorless, and topped with cheese (really?). Disappointing. However, I appreciate the free salsa section (every Mexican eatery should have this!) and will give it another try next time. Twice's the charm! -
Sebastian’s 4-star review: This former military/WWII post of the US Army is now one of the best places in San Francisco to either enjoy some outdoor time near the water, watch the sunset over the Golden Gate or the Pacific, or to take advantage of galleries, restaurants, or concerts. Fort Mason technically refers to two things: the Fort Mason Park, which is located on a hill, overlooking the Marina neighborhood in the South and the Bay in the North. And the Fort Mason Center which now hosts the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artists Gallery, the Blue Bear School of Music, the Long Now Museum and Gallery, the Mexican Museum, and lots more. If you want to host a corporate event there you can also book a room in House D. Parking is available but not free. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: Nice flagship store on Powell. I've been there a couple of times and always experienced the staff to be super friendly and diligent when it comes to offering help and keeping the store clean. Definitely a difference to let's say Zara in San Jose where the employees seem to be bored out of their minds. Good selection on casual men's stuff, decent quality and affordable. Parking is a hassle but if you come after 6 street parking is free and the garage on 5th and Mission is only $1.50 an hour. Deal. -
Sebastian’s 4-star review: I must have taken the wrong turn and ended up in San Francisco's most exquisite neighborhood. Gazed at and greeted by many unfamiliar friendly folks I was wandering the Streets Of Tenderloin in search for a quick bite to eat. El Tesoro Taqueria & Grill wasn't on my list of things to try this evening but it was getting dark, and Tenderloin started to turn into Zombie town. My Spanish is not that great but maybe El Tesoro means Oasis. I'm not sure. I stepped in. Closed the door behind me cautiously. Looked at the extensive menu full of Mexican food items. And soups. And burgers. And sandwiches. Perfect. I felt safe. While I was waiting for my food, I looked outside. It was dark by now and the Streets of Tenderloin had turned into a scene from World War Z. I knew I need to be strong once I get out there again. Luckily, only a few minutes later I was consuming my vaccine called burrito, fish taco, and quesadilla. Satisfied and bulletproof, I said "Adios" and made my way to the front door. Take that, Zombies. -
Sebastian’s 4-star review: Who would have thought I'd cheat on Philz but when I learned that Peetz actually offers French Press coffee, I got intrigued. And this is how the story ends, in an unnoticed moment (Philz was busy with other men, I guess) I sneaked out and into Peetz, curiously wandering around the store, exploring the extensive coffee menu. French Press to-go? Sounded perfect for me, especially since Philz usually notices if I'm away for too long. Requested my French Press to be made with Ethiopian beans, paid about $3.25, added some Half-n-Half to it, and ready was the most delicious coffee experience since I left the house this morning. Bye Peetz, gotta run, back I'll be back soon. And don't tell Philz. -
Sebastian’s 4-star review: If I was Argentinian, I'd probably get myself a ranch full of cows and ride my horse every day, light the Marlboro and look cool. Living the cowboy dream. Well, I'm nowhere near that. Instead, I'm stuck in a windowless office building all day and can only dream of fresh air, green fields, and the simple life of a cowboy. Hold on, actually my life is simple and I'm full of envy right now. A good cure happens to be Lolinda. A steak restaurant with a Latin vibe to it, hee-ya! Are you still going to Starbucks and think they have good coffee? Okay, stop reading now and go have your steak at Outback. Lolinda takes steak serious. Bring some $$$ and wait at the amazingly beautiful bar to be seated. Actually, you won't mind the wait as Lolinda is also serious about cocktails. Take a Daiquiri Anejo (15yr old rum, lime, sugar, $10) - made to perfection. On to the food. The New York Steak (beef di chorizo 12oz, $32) was cooked perfectly, crispy sides, medium-rare the inside. Tasty and extremely flavorful. Side dishes were Papas (roasted potatoes, chimichurri butter, $6) and Chilero (house made vegetables, $5). Additionally, the tapas didn't disappoint (Empanadas de Pollo, $7 and Ceviche Mixto, $13) - small plates but mouthwatering-worth every penny. 2 hours, a beautiful dinner, and some cocktails later, I'm convinced my windowless office life actually also has it's perks. It allows me to spend my dollars at this steak dream house every once in a while. -
Sebastian’s 4-star review: Tacos. Quesadillas. Burritos. Make it simple. This is not just a taco truck, this is THE taco truck. Super fast service, super tasty food. I've had several tacos, a burrito, and if the quesadillas wouldn't have been sold out at 8pm on a Friday, I would've spend my bucks on those as well. Where else can you eat yourself through the entire universe of Mexican street food, roll back to your car, and drive home - satisfied, and already planning your next visit. Taco-mania from now on. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: Froyo on Fillmore in PacHeights - how does that turn out? Just okay, my friend. I tried the Natural and the Chocolate flavor, both with strawberries. While I missed a little bit more of chocolaty flavor for the latter, the Natural was too plain for my taste - without the strawberries I pretty much tasted - nothing (and don't tell me that's the whole purpose of "natural" flavor - Yogurtland for example gets their natural tard right every time). You can choose between different kind of toppings, including roasted coconut and "freshly" cut dark chocolate - nice touch. Seating is limited and line is long on warm days. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: Game on! Good spot for pre-game hangout and drink. And eat. And mingle. Prices are expensive but drinks (beer, wine, cocktails, MOCKtails) come in fast. One nice thing is that you can take your drink into the AT&T park as Public House has a direct entrance into the stadium. Nice interior - brick-exposed walls, large TV screens, modern. Kinda what you would expect from a sports bar. Outdoor area, two very large rooms. I'll be back here for another game night, but I'll start saving my bucks right now. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: The international terminal of SFO is okay. Not too shabby like other airports in this country. Pro's and con's: Pro's: - free wifi - gates are not too far away from security - huge checkin area - meditation room/quiet area before security Con's: - parking is expensive - no coffee shop after security - limited food options before and after security That being said, if you're one of the unlucky victims of a flight cancellation and you need to spend your night at the airport, it's totally possible here. Or even spend a day here. Just saying... speaking from experience. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: Schroeder's got recently remodeled, so the legend goes (legend aka Yelper Peter L). I came here for the World Cup viewing of Germany vs Portugal and found a fairly large place - first part is a beer hall with the typical long, wooden tables and benches. The back holds the restaurant with an open kitchen. While the interior is impressive and gives the restaurant a very modern look I'd call it German-style restaurant rather than a traditional German. It's definitely a nice pick on German-inspired dining (and drinking). Since the game started at 9am I didn't try the beer selection (and you call yourself German, Sebastian) but instead had the breakfast. Sadly, that was a bit disappointing - for $20 I got a rather small portion of scrambled egg with a Bratwurst. Both the egg and the Bratwurst looked a bit lost on the large plate. My friend's Bratwurst was even undercooked. $20 for that? C'mon. I'll be back to check out the dinner but so far only 3 stars. Great interior and appearance, but the food didn't live up to the standards. But maybe twice's the charm. -
Sebastian’s 5-star review: If you're a native Bay Area guy or gal, you probably know everything about Philz Coffee already. If you're a new addition to the area like me, you learned it by now. And if you're here for the first time, then don't look any further - this is what it's about when people talk about the fantastic coffee of San Francisco. Unique, custom-made blends, enriched with a special mixture of cream and/or sugar, customized to perfection by friendly baristas - this is Philz. And if you're in town for only a few days, save all of that touristy stuff for laterz. Philz awaitz you. PS: Great location - spacious with lots of seating, tablez, and couchez. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: A rather weird name for a Sushi spot but since the neighborhood is not blessed with too many options I gladly went in here for lunch time. The lunch special (miso, salad, rice, and two items) sounded like a good value ($8.95) and it turned out to be just okay. Don't expect an overfloating bento box, instead, the teriyaki beef was put sparely into one corner, while I had to look closely to discover the chicken katsu. I was telling myself that for $8.95 I can't expect much but still, a bit disappointing the portion size. Taste-wise, I've seen much better Japanese food but let's be generous and stick with 3 stars. The spot is really small and more a corner/neighborhood restaurant - reservations not needed. Walk up the hill and forget about parking - you're in Nob HILL. -

Sebastian’s 4-star review: Finally a great Froyo place in the PacHeights neighborhood! If you like self-serviced froyo, lots of lots of lots of toppings, fresh fruits and chocolate, and all kinds of froyo flavors --- and who doesn't --- then come here. Every flavor I've had so far was just about right - rich and creamy, not watery, and flavorful. Froyo like it needs to be. Personally, I usually go for the Natural Tart which had just the right amount of sourness. I mean, you could really taste the natural flavor and you weren't lured into thinking you're eating iced water. My favorite Froyo place in the hood. -

Sebastian’s 4-star review: Lime Tree Southeast Asian Kitchen is a little mom&pop restaurant in the Inner Sunset. I stumbled into this basement spot after a night at the deYoung museum - good thing I did! It's easy to miss as it's a really small spot, and you gotta make your way downstairs from the street. Inside, it's not fancy at all - a couple of tables, a counter to order from, and an open kitchen. It smells like food. Good food. Lime Tree offers Southeast Asian cuisine, Singaporean, Malaysian, Indonesian. Simple, but sooooo delightful. What makes it so special is the smart use of different kinds of flavors to every dish, so everything you try has this little twist to it which makes the food here so outstanding. My favorite was the Beef Rendang ($4.99), slow cooked beef cubes in an Indonesian sauce - super soft and tender. Also fantastic: Tofu And Shiitake Mushroom With Basil Sauce ($4.99). I would come back just for these two dishes every week. Great value as it's very inexpensive and definitely worth the wait which can be a little bit at peak times. Highly recommended. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: This local donut shop has a reputation for being the number one spot after your night-out to finish it up with something sweet. And oh boy, when I say sweet, I mean SWEET. Forget about everything you learned in nutrition class and indulge in deep fried pastries like jam-filled donuts, or cinnamon-enriched apple fritters. Also forget about your cholesterol and live life to the fullest. Or, maybe not. Seriously, that stuff here is heavy. Sugar-carb heavy. Too much for my tastebuds. -
Sebastian’s 4-star review: Am I biased because I just love Korean food? Maybe. Do I hand out 4 stars automatically just because of that? Maybe. And am I hungry at 2am? Most definitely. After reading the reviews below I got the impression that Won Mi Korean BBQ has what the Doner Kebab in Berlin is - the perfect late-night dish. They might as well open at 10pm?! And guess what, I was hungry that night at 2am and was also in the area. Two large dining rooms, fast service, reasonably priced. Lots of starters, sizzling tofu hot pot, banchan, bibimbap, japchae. Solid food. And so much better than a Doner Kebab. Disclaimer: they changed their name recently to something I can't pronounce, but it still has "Korean BBQ" in it. Sorry for the unprofound note, my Korean friends. -
Sebastian’s 3-star review: AT&T Park as a baseball venue: Awesome. Good views from every angle, (overpriced) fatty fast food like hot dawgs and garlic fries, and drinks. Baseball action on the pitch. Some cuties in the audience. Views of the Bay. The sunset. What's not to like. AT&T Park as a concert venue: Meh. Depending on how much of your hard earned bucks you'll spend on a ticket you'll have either only have a decent or just a crappy concert experience. The sound will be terrible for most of the time, and no matter where you sit you'll be as far from the stage as you can possibly think of. Good thing there is a video screen but staring at it for the whole concert is basically like watching a concert DVD. Parking is basically non-existent or you'll find lot parking and include a 10-20 minute walk to the venue. Public transport: Caltrain (last train: midnight!), taxi, muni, Uber.
