Joanna’s 4-star review: I've been skating at a lot of different rinks and though it's not saying much for this rink or the other rinks, this is probably the best rink I've been to. I AM a competitive figure skater (my purple figure skate icon a dead giveaway...) and first thing, I've seen more adult skaters at this rink than any other rinks. Most of the other rinks in the Bay Area tend to have mostly rugrats running around unless the hours are strictly "adults only." The ice is very smooth and well maintained for the most part. Very figure skater friendly (Not too hard, not too soft... JUUUUUST right!!!) Admittedly, there are days where the service is much better and you're not packed in with a bunch of crazy kids. (i.e. don't come on weekends.) Freestyle is pretty crowded during the summer though on yesterday morning's session it was hardly more than 14 people. Monday and Wed. nights aren't that great either but much better than the weekends still. Coffee Club is GREAT! Friendly bunch of people! Yeah, parking sucks at times! That's why I took away a star. Then again, I usually come to skate when the meter maids are gone for the day (i.e. early mornings and nights) and I don't stay for more than an hour on the days where the meter maids are patrolling. (Coffee club and noon time public skate.) -
Joanna’s 5-star review: First thing: Lifestyle F.I.T. Love the nice quiet locale! Very clean! LOVE the bathroom decor. Doesn't smell like "gym" at all!!! (I usually judge business based on the bathrooms that the customers use...) The green terry towels are a nice touch too!!! :) As for the personal trainers.... first thing, I'm LMAO!!! I don't know what Denise W is smokin'... but she OBVIOUSLY has NEVER worked with Maggie before!!! The reason I'm LMAO is that ANYONE that REALLY knows Maggie well knows she's probably one of the LEAST self-absorbed person you will ever meet!!! (Also noting that the previous poster only has ONE review and it's this one Yelp review... hmmmm... sure looks suspicious to me....) Maggie and I have worked on my personal training for YEARS (known her even LONGER than that!) and she was the only trainer I've had that was able to address issues with my weight loss AND on my physical limitation to my skating coach's satisfaction! She not only takes the time to talk to me about MY training but also to my skating coaches. My coaches, her and I set GOALS for me on what we need to do to address my physical limitations and put a plan into action. She's passionate about making sure I am in tip-top shape not just for the sake of skating but just overall physical health. If you don't want to believe my coach, believe in my own results!!! (Sorry, my ex-personal trainer at Club One Yerba Buena! You just don't get me the results I'm looking for!!!) Before I have trouble working on my back crossovers b/c of my torso twist range and I get into BIG trouble colliding with other skaters on the freestyle sessions. Thanks to her, my torso twist range allows me to actually LOOK behind me as I'm pushing on those back crossovers and it gives me the confidence to move a LOT FASTER (well, at least that's what my fellow skaters tell me...) ALSO, before I could not get my non-skating anywhere near hip level height before on my spirals. Thanks to Maggie's homework and a lot of hard work on my own, I CAN NOW!!! Last but not least... she helps me to set plans on my on and off ice training right up to the day of the competition, so that I am well trained but still recovered enough to do battle on the ice when competition day comes! Trust me, she WORKS!!! My results speaks for itself!!! :) -
Joanna’s 4-star review: A bunch of co-workers invited me to come along to try this place. OH MY!!! This is good!!! Clay Pot is addicting. I love their oyster clay pot and their chestnut and braised chicken special on the Autumn special menu!!! BBQ Pork is pretty lean for the most part (there are some fat parts, but not too many...) and my hubby is a fan of their tomato beef chow mein. There's also a decent variety of Chinese desserts too... and not cloyingly sweet too!!! I'm definitely making this a regular place to go when I do eat out!!! :D -
Joanna’s 4-star review: I almost don't want to share this but... ;) They have a promo here at this Pomodoro on MONDAY NIGHTS where all to-go orders over $30 they take 30% off!!! VERY NICE DEAL if you are cutting back on your dining out but still too tired to cook. It's pretty decent for me since I order stuff that doesn't have cheese or cream. :) And of course, there are parking spots UP FRONT for those "to-go" orders too so no need to hunt for parking!!! I usually get two entrees, two soups & a side of brussel sprouts for me. Throw in some bread and the basil/olive oil thing as well too. Price comes to just over $24 and I get two meals out of the deal. (Hubby gets one but he's a big eater & doesn't like brussel sprouts.) Other note: A "to-go" BOWL of soup to go is only just SLIGHTLY bigger than a cup for to-go orders!!! ;) Happy Monday!!! :) P.S. For those who are also addicted to Starbucks, there is a Starbucks in that same mall too... :) -
Joanna’s 5-star review: Had some of hubby's pancakes to erase the bad pancakes we had recently at Baghdad's in San Francisco!!! THANK YOU JOANN'S for probably the BEST PANCAKES in the Bay Area!!! Melts in your mouth, buttery, maple syrupy deliciousness!!! :-P~~ And well worth screwing up my diet for those YUMMY pumpkin muffins around Halloween/Thanksgiving time!!! Pumpkin pancakes, of course, is DA BEST!!! :D And yes, this place can be easy to miss... THANK GOD, since if people spot this WONDERFUL little gem, I would NEVER get in for my weekly brunch here!!! :P -
Joanna’s 4-star review: I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan!!! But I do need to get in more veggies in my diet and I am allergic to dairy.... However, I do tend to run FAR away from those veggie/vegan restaurants b/c of that whole "you're supposed to be eating our food" attitude. (Sorry, RAW food people! Nothing against 'ya, but just not my thing...) So when I saw this restaurant and saw the spicy eggplant and sweet potato curry, I thought "Hmmmm? Two of my favorite veggie!!!" I just had to try it. I'm so glad I did b/c both of those items ROCK!!! VERY TASTY w/o having it "sit" in your stomach!!! And add to that.... vegan flan!?!?!?! NO DAIRY!?!?! OMFG!!! A FLAN that I can actually EAT w/o getting sick afterward in the bathroom!!! And it still taste like flan... very light, sugary. Also, it's at food court price! Now... it ain't Greens!!! It's NOT for the refined palate. It doesn't have the nice fancy schmacy table service and certainly NOT the atmosphere (i.e. Marina Green, pretty boats...) You'll probably been sitting at the food court with a bunch of SCREAMING BRATS and parents yelling back at them. But having the vegan flan and other desserts where it doesn't have dairy to screw with my stomach trumps Green's dessert menu!!! And if I really need to get away and sit at a nice area, I can always order it "to-go" and sit near the water sculpture at Yerba Buena Gardens and have a picnic!!! :P Can't give a 5 yet... have to try the other desserts, the meat substitutes meals and that steamed "fake pork" bun. And yes, this place is too small and at too mainstream of a locale for those religious videos that the Loving Hut at Chinatown has. Nor do I have waiters, host/esses and owners shoving their religion down my throat... and that's the way I want it, thank you!!! :) -
Joanna’s 4-star review: Hubby and I (well me anyway) have not had Thai food in a good long while. Part of the problem is that there aren't that many decent Thai places in the upper peninsula and he refuses to go into the city unless there's nice and cheap (as in free) parking and he just plain does not want to drive around looking for parking either. *sigh* I am thankful for my fellow Yelpers for reviewing White Elephant!!! We definitely hit a WINNER in the bunch finally!!! First thing that was a good sign was easy street parking. (We actually managed to find parking right in front of the restaurant right away, which definitely makes lazy hubby happy! :P ) I realized this place is gonna be VERY good as soon as we got our chicken satay. Peanut sauce is decent... but chicken is moist and tasty!!! Portions were definitely NOT skimpy by Thai restaurant standard. My basil eggplant chicken was very good! They also have brown rice on the menu. This definitely appeal to "health conscious me." Hubby's peppers and pork tasted pretty decent too (well the bite that I had anyway.) I didn't try the curry yet, but I saw a very tasty looking mixed seafood dish at the next table that I am just dying to come back to the next time I come to this place!!! :) Best part is that with a beer (hubby), tea, appetizer (satay) and two entree, it came to around $40... not bad considering. ;) -
Joanna’s 5-star review: Second FIVE STAR for Dr. Cheung! He's KEWL, he's funny and he SURE knows his stuff about sports injuries, especially pertaining to my sport. (He treats a few figure skaters patients too!) And the fact that there's a gym right next door so he can monitor how you should train thru your injury? PRICELESS!!! -
Joanna’s 4-star review: WOW!!! This is strange that people are reviewing parking garages... but this *IS* Yelp so... *shrug* Except if there's a street fair (Cherry Blossom Festival and Fillmore St. Fair comes to mind.) I've NEVER, EVER had problems with parking here!!! And believe me, I do go to Japantown often enough to eat with hubby at "On the Bridge" Yeah, the elevator is a bit scary too (which is why I took away a star!) but being the very active, impatient b**** that I am, I'd rather take the stairs. Of course, hubby hates the stairs and prefers the elevator anyway. (To be fair to him, he has ankle problems and walks funny.) I am not gonna mentioned about not having any break-ins given that I don't want to tempt fate and have one the next time I park there! Then again, there are PLENTY of security cameras around that no one would be STUPID enough to try it, so.... And I might consider the tip to come in EARLY to go to those two festivals too! It's been a while since I've been to either of those fairs. -
Joanna’s 5-star review: Mmmmm... curry!!! And the Japanese chicken and mushroom pasta too!!! We've been to On The Bridge for ages to say hello to Nakamura-san and the family for ages! (Yes, we've been there since their girls were little girls.) Love their Japanese chicken and mushroom pasta, curry and shrimp-based udon, curry rice and fries. Their grilled chicken with mushroom sauce is DIVINE!!! Hubby is always there for their locomoco/demi-glace sauce or curry, but recently raved about the grilled pork chop with ginger sauce. Don't knock the decor, guys! It's a great hangout for college age kids and the price for the food is quite worth it for the type of food you get from them! Besides, if you like Japanese manga... there's TONS of it along the wall for you to read!!! -
Joanna’s 5-star review: This place has become the standard where I measure a good burger!!! THAT says a lot about this burger!!! Yes, it's *THAT* good!!! Juicy, lots of good fresh beef with grilled onion flavor!!! NO CHEESE!!! It stands up on its own in flavor!!! :) Super Sauce is definitely better than ketchup for dipping the fries!!! And there is a jar of pickles for snacking while you wait for your burger to be done. Thank you, Super Duper for saving my Foodie rep when I had to take an out of town visitor and she trusts me to pick a good place. I'm glad I steered her here instead of the place I originally was gonna take her. She was in burger heaven too!!! -
Joanna’s 4-star review: I currently work at a company at Pacific Shores and this gym is kitty corner from my office building!!! WOW!!! This place is big. Has a climbing wall, swimming pool/whirlpool (which unfortunately is going thru maintenance now.) Also a ping pong and pool table lounge area. NICE!!! :D The trainers are very friendly. I haven't take any classes yet (lack of time... TOO MUCH WORK!!! :( ) but thanks to the convenience of this gym, I will definitely have a good chance to work out and get back to my fightin' weight again. :) I have their towels. Nice, soft and PLUSH!!! And the showers heads sprays good strong stream of warm to hot water. (Some of the Club One gyms out there have these really wimpy water sprays and the water is at best lukewarm. BRRRRRR!!!) Yes, sadly, this gym is only available to those who work at Pacific Shores. So I better do my best to keep my current job!!! ;) -
Joanna’s 5-star review: I found MV Nutrition by accident on here. Even though I'm very athletic, I was definitely overweight! By overweight, I don't mean that I was obese. I was NOT obese to start with... just needed to get some stubborn 10-15 lbs off. I worked my butt off (literally) with a trainer at a gym and my pants are STILL feeling tighter each week!!! *shocked* That's NOT how it's supposed to work!!! GRRRRR!!! Christina gave me a body fat analysis. EGADS!!! Body fat % WAAAAY too high!!! I kept track of my food in a journal and we went over what I normally eat. Yup! Fats too high!!! Carbs too high! Not enough veggies and leaner proteins (fish, turkey, chicken, lowfat cheese.) I got introduced to proper snacking and portion control. (Proper snacking is definitely something I was lacking given all the food that passes by around here at the office.) The weight started melting away. The great part is that it wasn't THAT difficult a transition either, b/c Christina works with you on making "small gradual changes." Christina also worked with me on adjusting my new food changes and lifestyle to my husband's "not so healthy" lifestyle. Two months later: I've lost 8 lbs off my 5' 3.5" frame so far. My body fat % has dropped two points. My pants are fitting very nicely. No more "I am really NOT pregnant" belly!!! Someone commented this morning that my legs are slimmer. I won't look perfect, but I'll look a lot nicer by Nov. for a skating competition. I will hit my goal by Christmas! Other goodie to consider: If you have health insurance and you ask your GP nicely for a referral to MV, your Aetna and Blue Cross health insurance DOES cover most of the cost of the session. Given my borderline high cholesterol level (I'm at 203!), it was very easy to justify the cost for MV thru my insurance. ETA 11/27/2007: WOW!!! They also managed to shoot down my cholestorol numbers too!!! My old numbers are as of 8/14/2006 at 139 lbs! The new numbers are as of 11/18/2007 (and now 125 lbs!!!!) Cholesterol: Old - 203; New - 172 LDL: Old - 134; New - 90 HDL: Old - 64; New - 63 (Note: Good cholestorol stayed the same!!!) Triglycerides: Old - 88; New - 30 Needless to say, my GP asked for their business card. MV Nutrition's gonna get a lot of referrals from him! :-) (If I could give them 5 more stars, I would...) ETA 12/3/2007: Original stats as of 8/25/2007: 8/25/2007: Weight: 137 lb BMI 23.5 Fat %: 31.9% Waist: 33.5" Hips: 39.5" Current stats as of 12/1/2007: Weight: 123.3 lbs BMI: 21.1 Fat %: 27.7% Waist: 28.5" Hips: N/A (not measured.) (Last measured was 10/6/07 and that was 37") 2/2/2008: Weight: 122.2 lbs BMI: 21.3 Fat %: 23.4% Total Fat Mass: 28.61 lb (12/1/2007: 33.61 lb) Muscle Mass: 93.61 lb (12/1/2007: 87.61 lb) I've gained 6 lbs of MUSCLES!!! :-D (Poses to flex her muscle and strike a muscle-bounded man's pose...) WOO HOO!!! I look and feel great!!! -
Joanna’s 3-star review: I almost don't want to share this, b/c then i would have to WAIT for my favorite waitress/waiter... but if you are going here on a day when Trinh or Hoi is there, ask for their table! They know what's what and have a clue. Food is okay. Nothing to write home about. The only reason I'm there is b/c it's close to home, it's cheap and most of all, Trinh. Well, that and they have Egg Beaters so I can stay on my diet. (I also ask for fruit bowl instead of hash browns too. Again, they can be sensitive to one's health concerns.) But food wise...only come if you're too lazy to cook or drive anywhere. Don't be afraid to send back order if it's not right with your food. Trinh will fix things and make it right!!! (Plus it's funny to hear her yell at the cooks in the back when they screw up... LOL!!! :-P ) Pies are pretty decent! On the fruit pies or the brownie pie, get it warm with ice cream on top!!! I like the peanut butter cup pie too! :-) -
Joanna’s 5-star review: And 3 years later... Adam continues to perform miracles!!! :) I had planned to see Adam tomorrow for a regularly scheduled massage. But I recently had a major sciatica attack again Sunday which gradually got worse into Monday. My chiro helped with some of the relief Monday evening, but I was still in considerable amount of pain and couldn't continue my early morning skating lessons. BIG figure skating competition in a week (that I've been preparing 7-8 months for) and here I am worrying whether or not I was even gonna be able to skate. I moved up my session with Adam to yesterday since I was in considerable pain to not be focused on my job! When I got on the massage table, it was with a lot of strain on my left hip. After Adam worked on it, the pain is GONE and I've regained mobility on that left side!!! I also had issues with my IT band on my left knee. It was considerably BETTER than when I walked into his office. Of course, I am still being careful not to undo the work that Adam has done on me for the next couple of days and I have him on speed dial if things get bad again. But I'm a LOT LESS worried about NOT making it to Salt Lake City to do battle on the ice!!! :)
